  • Dislocation dipoles were formed in the early stage of deformation of Y-CSZ single crystal at high temperatures. And the dipoles were pinched off to break into dipoles loops by dislocation climb. Dislocation loop annealing was peformed in Y-CSZ single crystal to evaluate the diffusivity of cation which was the rate-controlling ion.

  • Yttria stabilized zirconia single crystals show plastic deformation at high temperatures by activating dislocations. The plastic deformation is highly dependent on crystallographic orientation. When the samples were deformed at different orientations, stress-strain curves changed by operating different slip systems. The strength of samples was also highly dependent on crystallographic orientation, i.e., samples without yield drop showed higher strength than that of samples exhibiting yield drop. The slip systems in the sample deformed along <112>, <111> and <001> agreed with the theoretical values of the plastic deformation, following Schmid's Law. Dislocations play a major role in the plastic deformation of this crystal. At the early stages of plastic deformation, all samples exhibited dislocation dipoles and, in the later stages, dislocation interactions occurred by forming nodes, tangles and networks. In this study, three different orientations, [11-2], [111] and [001] were employed to explain the plastic deformation behavior. A microstructural analysis was performed to elucidate the mechanism of the plastic behavior of this crystal.

  • Yttria stabilized zirconia (Y-CSZ) single crystals show plastic deformation at high temperatures by activating dislocations. The effect of strain rate on the plastic behavior of this crystal was studied. As increasing strain rate from $\varepsilon=1.04\times10^{-5} sec^{-1}$ to $2.08\times10^{-5} sec^{-1}$ the yield drop was suppressed and resulted in higher Young's modulus and yield stress. Dislocation structures of the strained crystals were analyzed using a transmission electron microscope to elucidate the plastic behavior of these crystals. In the early stage of plastic deformation, dislocation dipoles and prismatic dislocation loops were formed in both samples. However, dislocation density was increased by increasing strain rate. Strong sessile dislocations were observed in the sample with higher strain rate, which may cause the higher work hardening.

  • It was grown ZrO2:10 mol% Y2O3 single crystals doped with 1 wt% of rare earth metal ion (Ce, Pr, Nd, Er, Eu) by Skull Method. Grown crystals showed Ce:orange-red, Pr:golden-yellow, Nd:lilac, Er:pink, Eu:light pink due to dopant effect. It was examined color centers in light absorption pattern of visible region (λ= 300~700 nm); in as grown samples, absorption by Ce4+, (Pr4+, Pr3+), Nd3+, Er3+, Eu3+ ions were important, and in samples after vacuum annealing, decrease of absorption by Pr4+ ion and increase of absorption by Pr3+ ion was important, and absorption by Ce3+, Eu2+ was important due to reduction of activator.

  • Yttria-Stabilized Cubic Zirconia Crystals with Various Y2O3 amounts (6-15mol%) were grown by the Skull melting technique. The modeling of the nucleation at the Skull bottom and the best growth condition were studied. The abrupt changes in generator heating Power and lowering rate of crucible caused the dendritic growth in the grown crystal. The optimum condition of cubic Zirconia single crystals was obtained when the lowering rate was gradually increased. The effect of Y2O3 amounts on the perfection adn the color of the grown crystal were determined. The darkish color generated in the crystals added Y2O3 amounts over 12mol% was eliminated by the annealing in air at 1200$^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs.

  • Cobalt ($Co^{2+}$) doped yttria stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ, $Y_2O_3\;:\;25{\sim}50wt%$) single crystals grown by a skull melting method were heat-treated in $N_2\;at\;1000^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs. The reddish brown single crystals were changed into either violet or blue color, respectively. Before and after heat treatment, the Co-doped YSZ crystals cut for wafers (${\phi}6.5{\times}t\;2mm$) and round brilliant (${\phi}10mm$). The optical and structural properties were examined by UV-VIS spectrophotometer and XRD. These results are analyzed absorption by $Co^{2+}\;(^4A_2(^4F)\to{^4P})\;and\;Co^{3+}$, change of energy gap and lattice parameter.

  • Colorless and transparent cubic zirconia($Zr_{0.73}Y_{0.27}O_{1.87}$) crystal has been synthesized by the Bridgman-Stock-bager method(also called Skull melting method). $Y_2O_3$ is used as stabilizer. The crystal shows a vitreous luster with a slight oily appearance. Under a polarizing microscope, it shows isotropic nature with no appreciable anisotropism. Mohs hardness value is measured to be $8{\sim}8\frac{1}{2}$ and specific gravity 5.85. Under ultraviolet light it shows a faint white glow. The crystal structure of yttria stabilized zirconia was determined, using single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques to be a cubic symmetry, space group $Fm\overline{3}m({O^5}_h)$ with $a=5.1552(5){\AA}$, $V=136.99(5){\AA}^3$, Z=4, and R=0.0488 for 29 unique reflections. Each zirconium atom is at the center of eight oxygen atoms situated at the corners of a surrounding cube and each oxygen atom is at the center of a tetrahedron of zirconium atoms. So a coordination of 8:4 holds in the structure.

  • High temperature superconducting films of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ were fabricated on the (100) single crystal faces of YSZ (yttria stabilized zirconia) and SrTi$O_3$ by aerosol spray using ultrasonic atomization. The superconducting phase was formed by a three-step process: (a) spraying of a stoichiometric solution of nitrates of yttrium, barium, and copper on heated substrates kept at 250$^{\circ}C$, (b) preheating of the sprayed films in air at 550$^{\circ}C$, and (e) sintering of the films in flowing oxygen at 950$^{\circ}C$, followed by furnace cooling. Resistances of the films were measured by the dc four-probe method and superconductivity was confirmed above the liquid nitrogen temperature.

  • Neutron single crystal and powder diffraction techniques have been applied to the structure analysis of yttria-stabilized zirconium, Z $r_{0.73}$ $Y_{0.27}$ $O_{1.87}$., prepared by the skull-melting method. The crystal structure has been determined to be cubic symmetry, space group Fm/equation omitted/ with a=5.155(2)$\AA$, V=136.99(5)$\AA$, Z=4, and R(F)=5.65%, $\omega$R(I)=10.57% for 70 integrated intensities of Bragg Peaks observed from single crystal of Z $r_{0.73}$ $Y_{0.27}$ $O_{1.87}$. The stabilizer atoms randomly occupy the zirconium sites and there are displacements of oxygen atoms with amplitudes of $\Delta$/a~0.033 and 0.11 along <110> and <100> directions from the ideal positions of the fluorite structure, respectively. There are no significant differences in crystallographic data between the single crystal and powder studies. Diffraction pattern after Rietveld refinement, using neutron powder data, has shown the evidence of a tetragonal impurity phase, or a slight tetragonal distortion.

The brown colored as-grown single crystals were changed into either dark brownish green, greenish blue and light green color after the heat treatment. Before and after the heat treatment, the YSZ (yttria-stabilized zirconia) single crystals were cut for wafer form (${\phi}7.5mm{\times}t3mm$).
