  • In this paper, artificial intelligence applications in library and information science are reviewed. Especially, natural language processing and expert systems are represented as the two major application areas. In natural language processing, natural language interface systems and .question-answering systems are discussed in detail with some specific examples. In the second part of the paper, online search intermidiary systems, reference expert systems, classification and cataloging expert systems are described as possible expert systems to be developed in libraries and information systems. As a conclusion, implications of the artificial intelligence applications for librarians and information scientists are suggested.

  • The first edition of 'A Standardized Pathology Report for Gastric Cancer' was initiated by the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists and published 17 years ago. Since then, significant advances have been made in the pathologic diagnosis, molecular genetics, and management of gastric cancer (GC). To reflect those changes, a committee for publishing a second edition of the report was formed within the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists. This second edition consists of two parts: standard data elements and conditional data elements. The standard data elements contain the basic pathologic findings and items necessary to predict the prognosis of GC patients, and they are adequate for routine surgical pathology service. Other diagnostic and prognostic factors relevant to adjuvant therapy, including molecular biomarkers, are classified as conditional data elements to allow each pathologist to selectively choose items appropriate to the environment in their institution. We trust that the standardized pathology report will be helpful for GC diagnosis and facilitate large-scale multidisciplinary collaborative studies.

  • In this approach, the antimicrobial activities of the compounds were compared with the ${\beta}$-lactam antibiotics against ${\beta}$-lactamase producing strains in vitro. Heteroc yclyl exomethylenepenam derivatives were several numbers of 6-exomethylenepenam sodiums (CH1240, CH1245, CH1250, CH2140, CH2145, CH2150). The inhibitory concentraion assay of six compounds were compared with clavulanic acid, sulbactam, tazobactam. Clavulanic acid, sulbactam and tazobactam are used as inhibitors of a variety of plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases. In vitro ${\beta}$-lactamase inhibitory assay, CH1240 and CH2140 were more active than clavulanic acid, sulbactam and tazobactam against ${\beta}$-lactamases overally. And in vitro comparative antimicrobial susceptibility test of six inhibitors were performed with mixed forms of ampicillin, cefotaxime, amoxicillin, ticarcillin, piperacillin, cefoperazone against ${\beta}$-lactamase producing 31 species strains. Consequently CH2140 and CH1240 among the six compounds enhanced the activity of the ${\beta}$-lactams for 31 ${\beta}$-lactamase producing strains.

  • Our previous studies demonstrate that menadione (MEN) is cytotoxic to platelets of rats by depleting glutathione (GSH). In order to clarify whether GSH has a role in protecting against menadione-induced cytotoxicity, the effect of GSH depletors as well as GSH precusors on menadione-induced cytotoxicity was investigated. Cysteine and dithiothreitol (DTT) prevent MEN-induced cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner, as determined by LDH leakage and change in turbidity. When platelets were treated with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) and diethylmaleate (DEM), both of which deplete intracellular GSH, MEN-induced cytotoxicity was potentiated in the CDNB-treated paltelets, but not in the DEM-treated platelets. These data suggest that the GSH in platelets plays an important role in protecting against cytotoxicity induced by menadione.
