Ca is material to used in Chinese cabbage (Brasica rapa L. spp. pekinensis). The variation of inorganic ions and GSLs in Chinese cabbage cultivated to control additional Ca contents in slaked lime. The additional fertilizer of slaked lime differ four grade that 0 g (Ca-0), 0.28 g (Ca-1), 0.56 g (Ca-2), 0.84 g (Ca-3) are week intervals with a total of 8 times after transplanting. Inorganic ions in Chinese cabbage ('Bulam plus') were analyzed to use inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectometry(ICP). The more additional slaked lime input, the more almost macronutrients contents were high except Ca. Ca contents were higher in Ca-0 (153.10) and lower in Ca-3 (130.55 mg/kg dry weight, DW). GSLs were identified based on peak retention time in previous results of our laboratory. Seven GSLs including two aliphatic (gluconapin, glucobrassicanapin), one aromatic (gluconasturtiin), four indolyl (glucobrassicin, neoglucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, 4-hydroxyglucobrassicin) were detected using HPLC. Progoitrin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, and gluconasturtiin contents increased in proportion to the input in additional slaked lime. Total GSLs contents were Ca-0 (11.95), Ca-1 (17.02), Ca-2 (19.63), Ca-3 ($17.11{\mu}mol/g$ dry weight, DW). Total Ca and GSLs contents (Ca-1,2,3; mean 17.92) are higher than non treatment (Ca-0; $11.95{\mu}mol/g$ DW).

The sugar beet cyst nematode, Heterodera schachtii is a well known pathogen on Chinese cabbage in the highland fields of Korea. However, a race of cyst forming nematode with close morphological resemblance to H. trifolii was recently isolated from the same Chinese cabbage fields. Morphological species differentiation between the two cyst nematodes is challenging, with only minor differences between them. Thus, this study described the newly intercepted H. trifolii population, and reviewed morphological and molecular characteristics conceivably essential in differentiating the two nematode species. A comparison of morphometric measurements of both infective juveniles and vulval cones of cysts showed significant differences between the two cyst nematodes. When total RNA and genomic DNA were extracted from a mixed field population, COI genes and ITS regions were clearly amplified with primers of the two Heterodera species, suggesting that Heterodera population collected from the Chinese cabbage field consisted of a mixture of two species. COI and ITS of H. trifolii were predominantly amplified from nucleotides prepared from H. trifolii monoxenic population whereas those of H. schachtii were strongly detected in H. schachtii monoxenic cultures. Thus, this study confirms the coexistence of the two species in some Chinese cabbage fields; and the presence of H. trifolii in Korea is reported here for the first time.

The influence of phosphorus and nitrogen application on the uptake of radioactive strontium by Chinese cabbage and raddish was studied in pot experiments. The dry matter yield of Chinese cabbage and raddish increased with the application of phosphorus and nitrogen. High yield of raddish was obtained by the additions of nitrate while Chinese cabbage was obtained by the ammonium. The content of potassium in the vegetables was enhanced by the application of phosphorus. and the calcium content increased with the application of nitrogen. The content of $^{90}Sr$ was higher in the raddish than in the Chinese cabbage while the $^{90}Sr$ activity in the dry matter of vegetables decreased considerably with the application of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizer. This indicates that the suppression of uptake was more effective with the application of nitrate than with ammonium.
Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinesis) is one of the most important vegetable crops in korea and other East Asian countries. Cytosolic fructose-1,6-bisphospha-tase (cytFBPase) is a key enzyme in sucrose biosyn-thesis, which controls the sucrose levels as well as the productivity at plants. The Chinese cabbage cytFBPase gene, BrFBPase, encodes the 340 amino acid polypep-tide, giving a theoretical molecular weight of 37.2 kD and a isolectric point of 5.4. BrFBPase showed high sequence identity with Brassica homologs and its functional domains, such as 12,6P$_2$ binding site or active site and F6P binding site, were highly conserved in diverse sources of organisms. Although the genome of Chinese cabbage seemed to be triplicated, BrFBPase appears to be a single copy gene. The expression of BrFBPase was examined at transcript and protein levels under various conditions. BrFBPase expression was observed only in photosynthetic source tissue, not in sink tissue. The expression was slightly higher during the day than at night, and it showed a diurnal cycle with circadian rhythmicity. Short-term exposure to low temperature inhibited the expression of the BrFBPase, while long-term exposure increased the expression, supporting that sugar levels are high in late autumn when temperature are low.
The aim of this study was to investigate the possible impact of Bt Chinese cabbage on the soil microbial community. Microbial communities were isolated from the rhizosphere of one Bt Chinese cabbage variety and four varieties of conventional ones and were subjected to be analyzed using both culture-dependent and molecular methods. The total counts of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes in the rhizosphere of transgenic and conventional Chinese cabbages were observed to have an insignificant difference. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes revealed that the bacterial community structures were very similar to each other and this genetic stability of microbial communities was maintained throughout the culture periods. Analysis of dominant isolates in the rhizosphere of transgenic and conventional Chinese cabbages showed that the dominant isolates from the soil of transgenic Chinese cabbage belonged to the Bacilli and Alphaproteobacteria, while the dominant isolates from the soil of conventional cabbage belonged to the Holophagae and Planctomycetacia, respectively. These results indicate that the Bt transgenic cabbage has no significant impact on the soil microbial communities.
The effect of hairy vetch sod culture on reduction of soil loss and providing of nitrogen was investigated for the fields of Chinese cabbage in Hoenggye-Ri, Pyeongchang-Gun Gangwon-Do (780 m above sea level) from 2002 to 2003. Hairy vetch was sowed at just before planting, 15, 30 and 40 days after planting and right after harvest of Chinese cabbage. Hairy vetch was sod-cultivated with Chinese cabbage. The amount of sowing was $40kg\;10a^{-1}$. In this experiment, proper sowing times that had no influence on the yield of Chinese cabbage were 30 and 40 days after planting while other sowing times led to decrease the yield. In case of the former, there was 74% reduction effect of soil loss compared with no-hairy vetch because of covering the fields with hairy vetch right after harvest. Moreover, when the hairy vetch was put into the soil before planting of Chinese cabbage in the next year, it showed 61-79% substitution effect of standard application rate ($320kg\;ha^{-1}$, chemical fertilizer) for nitrogen fertilizer. It is suggested that using hairy vetch as cover crop would be useful in conservation of soil loss and reduction input of agricultural materials.
This study was conducted to assess the acceptability of the desirable serving temperatures of soups by evaluating the sensory characteristics of Radish Clear Beef Soup, Meat Pot Stew, and Chinese Cabbage Beanpaste Soup used in the Foodservice Establishment. 1. Taste revealed a better acceptability under a high temperature than that under a low temperature in three soups. 2. The aroma of Meat Pot Stew, Chinese Cabbage Beanpaste Soup showed a significant difference for each temperature, and especially, Chinese Cabbage Beanpaste Soup showed a better sabory aroma at $80^{\circ}C{\sim}85^{\circ}C$. 3. Meat Pot Stew showed little significant differences in color and in its change among three soups. Chinese Cabbage Beanpaste Soup did not make any change of color at both $35^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C\;and\;50^{\circ}C{\sim}55^{\circ}C$. 4. In a Meat Pot Stew case, appearance conspicuously changed at $35^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C$, which resulted in losing appetite. Three soups showed a good response above at $65^{\circ}C$ and a very poor response at below $55^{\circ}C$. 5. Radish Clear Beef Soup, Meat Pot Stew, Chinese Cabbage Beanpaste Soup showed a tender texture at above $80^{\circ}C,\;65^{\circ}C\;and\;50^{\circ}C$. 6. Chewiness showed a good acceptability from $50^{\circ}C\;to\;80^{\circ}C$ in Radish Clear Beef Soup, Chinese Cabbage Beanpaste Soup cases, but only in the case of Meat Pot Stew showed good response at $80^{\circ}C{\sim}85^{\circ}C$. 7. In cases of Radish Clear Beef soup, Meat Pot Stew, bland and stinking aroma, and aftertaste were increased remarkably in proportion as temperature was lowered. In case of Meat Pot Stew, especially, it turned out to be almost impossible to eat at $35^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C$. 8. In cases of Radish Clear Beef Soup, Chinese Cabbage Heanpaste Soup, overall acceptability at $65^{\circ}C$ was comparatively good but aroma and taste at below $65^{\circ}C$ was so bad that there was the eminent tendency to avoid tasting.

ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGPase) catalyzes the key regulatory step in starch biosynthesis. Two cDNA clones encoding AGPase subunits were isolated from the leaf cDNA library of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. spp. pekinensis). One was designated as BCAGPS for the small subunit and the other as BCAGPL for the large subunit. Both cDNAs have uninterrupted open reading frames deriving 57 kDa and 63 kDa polypeptides for BCAGPS and BCAGPL, respectively, which showed significant similarity to those of other dicot plants. Also, However, the deduced amino acid sequence of BCAGPL has a unique feature. That is, it contains two regions (Rl and R2) lacking in all other plant enzymes. This is the first report of BCAGPL containing Rl and R2 among plant large subunits as well as small subunits. From the genomic Southern analysis and BAC library screening, we inferred the genomic status of BCAGPS and BCAGPL gene.
Roots of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var. chinensis) seedlings infected with Plasmodiophora brassicae were examined by light and electron microscopy to reveal histopathological changes related to pathogenesis in the susceptible host. The pathogen colonized the cortex and partly the stele as well, invading up to the xylem. Gall tissues could be differentiated from the initially infected tissues, involving less compact organization and new vascular development. The infected cells were much hypertrophied, and contained one to several plasmodia. Except cellular hypertrophy, no pathological ultrastructural modification was noted in the infected calls. Infected cytoplasm became dense with ground cytoplasm, inconspicuous central vacuole, and increased cellular organelles such as mitochondria and dictyosomes. There were two types of nuclear states of plasmodium, uninucleate and multinucleate. Both plasmodia were structurally similar, filled with lipid droplets, bounded with envelope, and containing mitochondria, endo-plasmic reticulum, and sometimes small vacuoles. Plasmodial fragmentation, which may be regarded as a way to discharge plasmodial materials into host cytoplasm, commonly occurred, forming plasmodial fragments by outgrowth of plasmodial cytoplasm and regional compartmentalization. Plasmodial fragments were degenerated sometimes followed by forming chains of spherical vesicles especially in the uninucleate plasmodial state. These ultrastructural features indicate the biotrophic nature of the pathogen associated with its pathogenesis in the susceptible host.
Lipoxygenase activity in Chinese cabbage was measured at various concentrations of brines. Lipoxygenase activity on linoleic acid substrate was determined by changing the rate of dissolved oxygen consumption. The inactivation of lipoxygenase by salting was increased when concentration of sodium chloride and soaking time were increased. About 60% of enzyme activity was reduced after submerging in 13% brine solution for 5 hr. The addition of calcium chloride (0.7%) reduced about $10{\sim}15%$ of lipoxygenase activity rather than without. Residual activity of lipoxygenase in Chinese cabbage submerged in 13% brine was 20% and about 60% of lipoxygenase was also inhibited by addition of garlic extract.
