  • The goal of this research was to understand the patterns of multidimensional engagement in MOOCs. An email with an online survey link was sent to enrollees in an MOOC course. The survey included 35 questions asking about engagement, teaching presence, and learning persistence. The items were validated in the literature, revised for the MOOC setting, reviewed by four professionals in the field of educational technology, and used in the study. A heterogeneous group of 170 individuals gathered through convenience sampling participated in the study. With cluster analysis of the engagement data, three groups were identified: Cluster1, 2, and 3. Cluster 1 scored high on behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. Cluster 2 scored high on behavioral aspects but low on emotional and cognitive engagement. Cluster 3 scored low on behavioral and cognitive engagement but high on emotional aspects. The study addressed cluster-specific learner characteristics and differences in perceived teaching presence and learning persistence. Design strategies pertaining to each cluster were further discussed. These strategies may guide instructors and practitioners in the design and management of MOOCs and should be further validated through future studies.

  • The human turbinate-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hTMSCs), which were DiI-labeled and transplanted into the subretinal space in degenerating mouse retina, were observed in retinal vertical sections processed for rhodopsin (a marker for rod photoreceptor) by confocal microscope with differential interference contrast (DIC) filters. The images clearly demonstrated that DiI-labeled hTMSCs have rhodopsin-immunoreactive appendages, indicating differentiation of transplanted hTMSC into rod photoreceptor. Conclusively, the finding suggests therapeutic potential of hTMSCs in retinal degeneration.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine priorities for designing digital citizenship education based on the key indicators of importance-performance. Survey data were collected from 283 university students in South Korea and analyzed with Importance-Performance Analysis to diagnose the current level of digital citizenship and draw their needs for educational treatment. The results showed that for all the factors except the Technical Skills (TS), the level of importance was significantly higher than that of performance. Another finding indicated that in the Importance-Performance matrix all the factors were located in the first quadrant (i.e. maintaining the current state) and the third quadrant (i.e. low demands for improvement). Specifically, two items located in the second quadrant where urgent treatment is required could have to do with the increasingly active participation in socio-political issues raised in South Korea. This study offered a window into what to focus on when designing digital citizenship education based on the systematic analysis of the needs for digital citizenship education in South Korea.

  • A graphene-Zn/Al layered double hydroxide composite film was simultaneously prepared by electrochemical deposition on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (G-LDH/GCE) from the mixture solution containing GO and nitrate salts of $Zn^{2+}$ and $Al^{3+}$. The modified electrode showed good electrochemical performances toward the simultaneous electrochemical detection of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CA) and resorcinol (RE) due to the unique properties of graphene (G) and LDH such as large active surface area, facile electronic transport and high electrocatalytic activity. The redox characteristics of G-LDH/GCE were investigated with cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The well-separated oxidation peak potentials, corresponding to the oxidation of HQ, CA and RE, were observed at 0.126 V, 0.228 V and 0.620 V respectively. The amperometric response of the modified electrode exhibited that HQ can be detected without interference of CA and RE. Under the optimized conditions, the oxidation peak current of HQ is linear with the concentration of HQ from 6.0 ${\mu}M$ to 325.0 ${\mu}M$ with the detection limit of 0.077 ${\mu}M$ (S/N=3). The modified electrode was successfully applied to the direct determination of HQ in a local tap water, showing reliable recovery data.

  • It is difficult for non-experts to build machine learning (ML) models at the level that satisfies their needs. Deep learning models are even more challenging because it is unclear how to improve the model, and a trial-and-error approach is not feasible since training these models are time-consuming. To assist these novice users, we examined how interactive and explainable feedback while training a deep learning network can contribute to model performance and users' satisfaction, focusing on the data preparation process. We conducted a user study with 31 participants without expertise, where they were asked to improve the accuracy of a deep learning model, varying feedback conditions. While no significant performance gain was observed, we identified potential barriers during the process and found that interactive and explainable feedback provide complementary benefits for improving users' understanding of ML. We conclude with implications for designing an interface for building ML models for novice users.

  • A captive mute swan (Cygnus olor) in the brooding period was found dead without any specific signs. On necropsy, the entire digestive tract was severely necrotized with loosely adherent pseudomembranes, and Clostridium perfringens (CP) colonies isolated from the intestinal contents were identified as CP type A by polymerase chain reaction. Microscopically, the intestine and the liver were necrotized and intralesional bacterial clusters were observed. In this case, there were no other mortalities, so the condition of a single bird, in particular, stress from incubation effort, could act as the predisposing factor for necrotic enteritis. In this study, we report a unique case of necrotic enteritis associated with incubation in a captive mute swan.
