  • This study was conducted to evaluate the degree of acid tolerance of indigenous Rhizobium in natural soils, and to select the superior Rhizobia for legume forage on hilly land. 153 Rhizobial strains isolated from two host genera, Medicago and Trifolium in the pastures of Yeongnam area were screened on acidic agar plates. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The degrees of acid tolerance of R. meliloti and R. trifolii were ranged from 4.3 to pH 5.5 and from 4.0 to pH 5.5 respectively. 2. Among acid tolerant Rhizobia isolates, two strains of R. meliloti at pH 4.3 and three strains of R. trifolii at pH 4.0 were shown to have the activities of nodulation and nitrogenase. 3. R. trifolii strains were shown to survive about 80 to 99% at the pH range 4.8 to 5.0, while R. meliloti were about 35 to 47% at that pH range. Therefore, more acid tolerant R. meliloti should be developed for legume forage in Korean hilly land.

  • The survey on the occurrence and distribution of barley stripe disease was conducted in the farmer's field of 19 gun (county) throughout Yeongmm area in May of 1982, in order to obtain a basic information on the breeding of resistant varieties, and for control of the disease. The percent of infected culms of barley stripe disease in Gyeongnam province (Southern Yeongnam) was higher $(13.7\%)$ them in Gyeong-bug $(6.9\%)$, northern Yeongnam, and especially, Ham-an, Milyang, Eui-chang and Weol-seong were severly occurred. The cultivar of Millyang 6 was slightly infected while the cultivars Olbori and Oweolbori were severely infected by the disease. Among soil conditions, the barley plant grown in the loam, clay and clay loam texture which have more availble moisture, and that of the plant cultivated in the poorly drained soils were shown to have severe infection. The barley plant grown in the soils in local valley $(18.8\%)$ where is frequently over saturated with water showed the more infection the barley plant grown in plains $(9.5\%)$. Generally, the poorer the soil drainage the more severeinfection occurred. Among cultivation conditions, the earlier the sowing dates of the barley, the less the percent of infected culms was observed. The heavier or lighter application of N fertilizer than the optimum to barley plant seemed to cause more infection.

  • In this study, SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating was performed on deformed granitic rocks in the Sancheong area in the northeastern part of the Jirisan area, southwest of Yeongnam Massif. Until now, these have been known as Precambrian or age-unknown old igneous rocks, but the U-Pb concordant ages obtained from two samples are $237.8{\pm}4.0Ma$ and $230.2{\pm}3.4Ma$, respectively, showing their emplacements in Early to Middle Triassic. These results indicate that the deformed granite was emplaced at about 238~230 Ma. The study area shows the characteristics of ductile deformation with prominent development of foliation, augen structure, and lineation. It is observed that the deformed granites occur as xenoliths within the syenite, indicating that the time of deformation is earlier than the intrusion of the syenite of about 220 Ma. The emplacement and deformation periods of the deformed granite is similar to that of Permo-Triassic granite gneisses distributed in the Gimcheon and Andong areas of the Yeongnam Massif. Taken together, the eastern part of the Yeongnam Massif, extending from the central part to the southwestern part, granite intrusions occurred at about 260-230 Ma, followed by metamorphism-deformation of about 230-220 Ma.

  • Bacillus subtilis strain BAC02-4 was tested for its ability induced systemic resistance(ISR) in rice against Magnaporthe grisea We extend these studies to investigate the biological induction of systemic resistance in rice following treatment with the inducer isolate BAC02-4 and naturally infested with Pyricularia oryzae. We also determine levels of ISR activity during the period between disease development and the onset of systemic resistance. Comparition of lesion number according to applied concentration of BAC02-4 to 'Nagdongbyeo' when naturally infested with the conidia of P. grisea. Results from the blast nusery trial using the 'Nagdongbyeo' showed very low rice blast severity with the inducer concentration of 10$\^$8/ cfu level. Considering the low level of treatment and untreated control were observed to have developed typical susceptible lesion type. Highest protection against the rice blast pathogen when applied three times with 5 days interval as root drench at 5 to 6 leaf stage before pathogen challenge. But higher dose of bacterial inducer produced a little stunted plants with less number lesions and delayed disease development. Diseased leaf area of treated with suspension of the isolate which gave about 80% of control efficacy at 20 days later comparable to that in noninfested, inducer-free soil.

  • Epicoccosorus nematosporus was detected in all 22 counties surveyed, but the frequency of occurrence of fingerprint stem blight disease (FSBD) on Eleocharis kuroguwai caused by the fungus varied with fields and regions. The disease occurred more frequently in mountain areas than in plain areas. E. nematosporus was detected in less than 20% of plain areas such as Cimjae and Milyang, whereas, it occurred in 40-60% of mountain areas such as Sangiu and Jangsoo. In Milyang, mean temperature in July to August 1993 ranged from 17 to $27^{\circ}C$ with 14.3 h of dew period. Meanwhile, in the mountain area such as Sangiu, Gyeongbook, temperature ranged from 17 to $24^{\circ}C$ with 16.1 h of dew period. Plant mortality was 61% in Milyang and 82% in Sangju. Underground tuber formation was highly suppressed at 16 and 33 tubers per plot in Sangju and Milyang, respectively. In 1992 and 1995, plants infected ranged from 40 to 78% in July to September. This sharply decreased to an average of 15% in 1999.

  • This study is to identify the physiological traits of submergence-tolerant varieties of rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) in Yeongnam area, southeastern part of Korea, where the reduction of rice yield due to submergence is remarkably severe. In the present study, two tolerant varieties of rice plants were selected from over 30 rice varieties grown in under a 10-day period. The tolerant varieties selected from a submerged paddy field. As a control, one intolerant variety of rice plant was chosen. Of the tolerant variety Samgangbyeo, rather than Haepyungbyeo, had a lower dissolved oxygen consumption and maintained a higher dry weight than the intolerant variety. The leaf photosynthetic rates (LPS) of the two tolerant varieties were significantly higher than that of the intolerant-variety after four days of submergence treatment. These results indicate that lower dissolved oxygen consumption in a limited pool is prevented by ethylene formation in the tolerant varieties, which may be a mechanism of submergence tolerance.

  • The survey was carried out in the Goryeong area in Gyeongbug province to point out the hinderances of grave increment on the development of hilly to mountainous area and to give basic data to improve the entombment custom. The total extent of gravesite in the area was mapped 148ha which were 0.4% of total area and 1.8% of arableland respectively. Scattering of graves might be hindered utilization of the mountainous area. Out of the total gravesite, about 60% was situated on the areas of 30-60% slopes, and the occupation extent in average was about $89m^2$ per grave which was wider than that of the national average $52m^2$. The soils occupied by gravas ware characterizod by having recommendable properties about 73% for grassland, about 17% for woodland and 8% for orchards.

  • This paper is to classify subregions of Yeongnam region, to realize their core area, and to provide the basis on studying inherent cultural characteristics in Yeongnam region. To do so, I made a overlay human factors of administrative district and dialect with physical factors of drainage basin and climate area. The limit of subregion is the range of possessing environmental factors similar to provincial center. The parcels possessing a equivalent combination of environmental factors are 27, the size of parcel is various from one-city/county to six-city/county. These parcels are classified to six subregions(Andong, Sangju, Kyeongju, Daegu, Kimhae, Jinju). The boundary of subregion is high mountains and large river which are obstacle to communication between subregions, and in case of little obstacle exists transitional zone.
