  • In this paper, new type of finite element models for the analysis of nonlinear beam bending are developed by using unconventional residual minimizing method to increase accuracy of finite element solutions and overcome some of computational drawbacks. Developing procedures of the new models are presented along with the comparison of the numerical results of existing beam bending models.

  • This study examines the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individuals' performance in the Republic of Korea armed forces and explores whether job stress mediates the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individuals' performance. The research questions are: (1) Does intrinsic motivation influence individual performance in military organizations? (2) Does job stress impact individual performance? and (3) Does job stress mediate the relationship between intrinsic motivation and individual performance? The study utilizes data collected from a 350 soldiers survey in the Special Forces Brigade and Special Assault Commando Regiment of the Republic of Korea's Army. We use structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the mediation role among intrinsic motivation, job stress, and individuals' performance. Research findings suggest that intrinsic motivation negatively impacts job stress. We also find that job stress has a positive effect on firearm skills. Moreover, the study reveals that the relationship between intrinsic motivation and firearm skills is partially mediated by job stress.

  • The study area is located in Hyeonseo-myeon and Andeok-myeon of Cheongsong-gun, Korea around the Yeongcheon dam waterway tunnel, and in this paper, it is analyzed whether the groundwater level is recovered or not compared to groundwater level before waterway tunnel construction by measuring the groundwater level of 156 wells which were installed in areas near and away from the waterway tunnel. From September 2017 to August 2018, the groundwater level of the well was measured at least once a month, and as a result of groundwater level observation survey, the groundwater level of wells distributed in the directly affected zone by the waterway tunnel is relatively lower than that of the indirectly affected zone apart from the waterway tunnel. These results are estimated to be predominantly affected by the effect of waterway tunnel acting on geologic discontinuities rather than by terrain conditions, i.e. groundwater flows being leaked to the waterway tunnel through direct or indirect channels. Continuous monitoring and further investigation will be required to maintain groundwater facilities and preserve groundwater environments in the future.

  • Three serotypes (O, A and Asia1) of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine were injected into domestic cloven-hoofed animals in korea after the nationwide spread at the end of 2010. The purpose of this study was survey of FMD virus stuructural protein (SP) antibody titer in Yeongcheon by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Total 1,324 samples collected from 89 farms were tested. The overall seroprevalence of FMD virus SP antibodies was 58.8% (778/1,324) The seroprevalence of FMD virus SP antibody varied with species. Results in cattle (over 12 month old) and pig (90 to 130 day old) were 58.8% and 44.9% respectively.

  • The government of Gyeongbuk in Korea increased the financial input in the agricultural sector by 43% from 2008 through 2012. However, the productivity of the agricultural sector in Gyeongbuk rose only about 3.6% during the same period. This study evaluated the agricultural competitiveness of each city or county in Gyeongbuk using six evaluation indices (scale, productivity, finance input, location quotient, technical education, and total) and investigated the relationship between the indices and total values of agricultural productions. The results show that Sangju, Gyeongju, Andong, Uiseong, and Seongju have high competitiveness for the scale index. For the productivity index, Gimcheon, Mungyeong, Ulleung, Yeongju, and Seongju were highly evaluated. For the location quotient index, Yeongcheon, Uiseong, Cheongdo, Seongju, and Sangju have high competitiveness. Uiseong, Yeongdeok, Cheongsong, Gunwi, and Yeongyang were highly evaluated for the agricultural finance input index. For the agricultural technical education index, Chilgok, Sangju, Mungyeong, Uiseong, and Gyeongju have high competitiveness. Finally, Sangju, Euiseong, Yeongcheon, Gyeongju, and Andong were highly evaluated for the total competitive index, while Yeongdeok, Yeongyang, Goryeong, Uljin, and Cheongsong have a low competitiveness for the total competitive index. This study also found that out of five indices, scale, location quotient, and technical education indices have a positive and statistically significant effect on the total values of agricultural production. However, we did not find any statistically significant effect of the productivity and finance input indices on the total values of agricultural production. Hence, we can conclude that the government should focus their agricultural policy on scale, location quotient and education to improve total agricultural production.

  • Pile-supported structures are installed on saturated sloping grounds, where the ground stiffness may decrease due to liquefaction during earthquakes. Thus, it is important to consider saturated sloping ground and pile interactions. In this study, we conduct a centrifuge test of a pile-supported structure, and analyze the p-yp loops, p-yp loops provide the correlation between the lateral pile deflection (yp) and lateral soil resistance (p). In the dry sand model (UV67), the p-yp loops stiffness increased as ground depth increased, and the p-yp loops stiffness was larger by approximately three times when the pile moved to the upslope direction, compared with when it moved to the downslope direction. In contrast, no significant difference was observed in the stiffness with the ground depth and pile moving direction in the saturated sand model (SV69). Furthermore, we identify the unstable zone based on the result of the lateral soil resistance (p). In the case of the SV69 model, the maximum depth of the unstable zone is five times larger than that of the dry sand model, and it was found that the saturated sand model was affected significantly by kinematic forces due to slope failure.

  • The importance of each warfighting function for Army TIGER unit attack drones is measured using the AHP technique. As a result, the importance of attack drones is high in the order of maneuver, firepower, intelligence, command/control, protection, and operation sustainment, but the importance of maneuver, firepower, and intelligence are almost similar. In addition, it is analyzed that attack drones capable of carrying out day and night missions by being equipped with an EO/IR sensor and being commanded/controlled in conjunction with the C4I system to eliminate threats with small bombs or aircraft collisions is needed. Finally, based on the results of this study, a virtual battle scenario for attack drones is proposed.
