The Effects of Zanthoxylum schinifolium Extract in a Dextran Sulfate Sodium-induced Rat Colitis Model (Dextran Sulfate Sodium 유도 흰쥐 궤양성 대장염에 대한 산초 추출물의 효과)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inlfammatory effect of the extract of Zanthoxylum schinifolium on ulcerative colitis induced by 3% dextran sulfate sodium in the rat. The experiment animals were divided into six groups: control (normal), DDS-induced colitis, 1 mg/kg, 15 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg of the extract of Z. schinifolium and 150 mg/kg of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) as comparative drug. Anti-ulcerative colitis effect was evaluated pathologically by disease activity index (DAI), the change of weight and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in colon mucosa. Treatment with 15 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg of the extract of Z. schinifolium significantly improved the gain of body weight and DAI as clinical symptoms, and reduced MPO and $PGE_2$ level as biochemical index. Especially, 150 mg/kg of the extract of Z. schinifolium showed markedly more improvement than the same dose of 5-ASA in all kind of index such as MPO, $PGE_2$ and DAI. These results suggest that Z. schinifolium mediated anti-inflammatory action on colorectal sites may be a useful therapeutic approach to ulcerative colitis.

Preparation and characterization of rutile phase TiO2 nanoparticles and their cytocompatibility with oral cancer cells

  • In the present study, rutile phase titanium dioxide nanoparticles ($R-TiO_2$ NPs) were prepared by hydrolysis of titanium tetrachloride in an aqueous solution followed by calcination at $900^{\circ}C$. The composition of $R-TiO_2$ NPs was determined by the analysis of X-ray diffraction data, and the characteristic features of $R-TiO_2$ NPs such as the surface functional group, particle size, shape, surface topography, and morphological behavior were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential measurements. The average size of the prepared $R-TiO_2$ NPs was 76 nm, the surface area was $19m^2/g$, zeta potential was -20.8 mV, and average hydrodynamic diameter in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-$H_2O$ solution was 550 nm. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and morphological observations revealed that $R-TiO_2$ NPs were cytocompatible with oral cancer cells, with no inhibition of cell growth and proliferation. This suggests the efficacy of $R-TiO_2$ NPs for the aesthetic white pigmentation of teeth.

Genetic Evaluation and Calculating Daughter Yield Deviation of Bulls in Iranian Holstein Cattle for Milk and Fat Yields

  • This study was aimed at a genetic evaluation of Iranian Holstein cattle for milk and fat yields and calculating daughter yield deviation (DYD) of bulls. The data file that was used in this research included 367,943 first three lactation records of 186,064 Holstein cows which calved between 1983 and 2006 in 11,806 herd-year-season groups. The model included herd-year-season of calving and age at calving as fixed effects and animal and permanent environment as random effects. Mean breeding values of cows for each year were regressed on birth year to estimate genetic trends. Genetic trends in milk and fat yields were greater for cows born after 1997 (59.38 kg/yr and 1.11 kg/yr for milk yield and fat yield, respectively). Animal evaluations were partitioned into contribution from parent average, yield deviation (YD) and progeny. DYD of bulls was calculated as described by VanRaden and Wiggans (1991). DYD provides an indication of the performance of the daughters of a bull without consideration of his parents or sons. Variance of bull DYD was greater than variance of their predicted transmitting ability (PTA). Correlation of bull DYD and PTA was dependent on the number of daughters and when this increased, the correlation of DYD and PTA was increased. Also as lactation number of daughters increased, the correlation of bull DYD and PTA was increased.

  • A natural population of Adonis multiflora, a spring ephemeral herb growing in temperate deciduous forests, was studied to determine the seed production characteristics. Plant size, flowering time, and seed number were monitored from February 2009 to May 2011 in main growing season (i.e., from March through May). The biomass rates of the shoot and the root in the A. multiflora population were 22-24% and 76-78%, respectively, and the biomass of the root was proportional to that of the shoot. The flowering rate was 60% in the plants with 1 to 2 g of shoot biomass, and 100% in the plants with >2 g of shoot biomass. In the plants with root biomass between 4 and 6 g, the flowering rate was 43% and, in the plants with the root biomass over 8 g, it was 100%. The shoot biomass was a better predictor of the flower production probability than the root biomass. The number of flowers and seeds was closely correlated to shoot biomass at 1% significance level. The size of the plant that produced seed excessively instead of the shoot biomass in one year typically decreased in the next year and vice versa. The flowering time and its duration were closely related to the number of faithful seeds but not to that of total seeds. The number of faithful seeds was proportionate to flowering duration and inversely proportionate to flowering time (year day, YD). In a plant, the number of faithful seeds noticeably decreased with the inflorescence (i.e., order of flower in a plant), and this difference between the two successive flowers was significant at the 1% level between the first and the third flower in 2009 and 2011 but not between the third and the fourth. However, the number of total seeds was mostly similar in the first through the fourth flower for all three years.

  • In this study, we evaluated the human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping test called MolecuTech REBA HPV-$ID^{(R)}$ (YD Diagnostics, Seoul, Korea) for 704 women who also had cervical cytological evaluations by Thin Prep. The infection rate of high-risk HPV genotypes was 56.6% in patients with normal cytology, 59.8% in those with benign, low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, 51.4% in those with atypical squamous cells of uncertain significance, 92.3% in those with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, and 94.1% in those with squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma. HPV 16 was the most common genotype detected in any lesion, followed by HPV 53, 58, 33, 52, 45, 31, and 35, in order. The HPV DNA test with PCR-REBA is a very highly sensitive, but less specific, method. The infection rates and HPV genotype distribution of non-Korean people versus people from South Korea showed regional differences.

Effect of Coarse mateflal on the mechanical properties of Soil (조립재가 흙의 역학적 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • The study was carried out for the strength parameter of coarse grained Soil and slope stability analysis of earth dam. The test samples were taken fifteen kinds of soil from cohesive soil to coarse gravel. The degree of compaction of test samples for shear test and permeability test was chosen 95 percentage of maximum dry density. The results of this study are as follows ; 1.The maximum dry density(Yd) of coarse grained soil increase in proportion to coarse particles(P) with the relation of Y d= 1.609+0.0043P. 2.The coefficients of permeability(k) decrease by the increase of fine particles(n) with the relation of k=0.0426e-0 185n. 3.The cohesions of soil decrease by the increase of coarse particles, but internal friction angles are more increased in same condition. 4.The internal friction angles(${\Phi}$) decrease in inverse proportion to void ratio(e) with the relation of ${\Phi}$ = 73.068 - 69.268e. 5.The strength parameters( Ct ${\Phi}$t) by triaxial compression test are clearly smaller than that (Cd, ${\Phi}$d) by direct shear test in fine grained soil, but the differences between both parameters are a little in coarse grained soil.The relations of both parameters are as follows; Ct = O.544Cd + 0.04 ${\Phi}$t= 1.282${\Phi}$d-2306 6.In cohesive soil, the strength parameters( Cl ${\Phi}$l) by large size shear test apparatus are similar to the strength parameters(Cs , ${\Phi}$s) by small size shear test appratus, but Cs and ${\Phi}$s values are larger than Cl and ${\Phi}$l values from 10 percentage to 20 percentage in coarse grained soil. 7.The fine grained soil is inappropriate to high dam more than 20 meters and it must be taken coarse grained soil with high internal friction angle for high dam.

  • TEPC (Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter) was usually used for high LET radiation dosimetry. We developed a prototype TEPC for micro-dosimetry in the range of $0.2{\sim}300 keV/{\mu}m$. And, the simulated site diameter of the TEPC is $2{\mu}m$, of similar size to a cell nucleus. For purposes of characterization the response for high LET radiation of the TEPC has been investigated under 135MeV/u Carbon ions in HIMAC (Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator). We determined the gas multiplication factor and measured the lineal energy spectrum [yd(y)] of 135 MeV/u Carbon ions. The value of the gas multiplication factor was 315 at 700 V bias voltage. As a result of the experiment, we could more understand the performance of the TEPC for high LET (Linear Energy Transfer) radiation. And the procedure of high LET radiation dosimetry using TEPC is established.

  • This study was carried out to investigate anti-inflammatory effects of collected mushroom in Korea. Anti-inflammatory effects analysis was followed by MTT test and nitric oxide inhibition activity. Thirty mushrooms were screened and twelve mushrooms were selected about MTT assay and three mushrooms were good at nitric oxide inhibition test. In our result, three mushrooms: Amanita virgineoides, Tylopilus neofelleus, Armillaria tabescens were good resource for anti-inflammatory effects and to be followed more research about relat.

Effects of Observation Network Density Change on Spatial Distribution of Meteorological Variables: Three-Dimensional Meteorological Observation Project in the Yeongdong Region in 2019 (관측망 밀도 변화가 기상변수의 공간분포에 미치는 영향: 2019 강원영동 입체적 공동관측 캠페인)

  • We conducted a study on the impact of observation station density; this was done in order to enable the accurate estimation of spatial meteorological variables. The purpose of this study is to help operate an efficient observation network by examining distributions of temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed in a test area of a three-dimensional meteorological observation project in the Yeongdong region in 2019. For our analysis, we grouped the observation stations as follows: 41 stations (for Step 4), 34 stations (for Step 3), 17 stations (for Step 2), and 10 stations (for Step 1). Grid values were interpolated using the kriging method. We compared the spatial accuracy of the estimated meteorological grid by using station density. The effect of increased observation network density varied and was dependent on meteorological variables and weather conditions. The temperature is sufficient for the current weather observation network (featuring an average distance about 9.30 km between stations), and the relative humidity is sufficient when the average distance between stations is about 5.04 km. However, it is recommended that all observation networks, with an average distance of approximately 4.59 km between stations, be utilized for monitoring wind speed. In addition, this also enables the operation of an effective observation network through the classification of outliers.

  • For purpose of anti-static film remaining unchanged in the condition of $160^{\circ}C$, organic solvent, acid and base solution $0.01\sim0.03{\mu}m$ particles of Sb doped tin oxide(ATO) were grafted by 3-Glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTS) for improving interfere bonding force between ATO and epoxy resin. The particles were dispersed in 2-methoxyethanol with YD-I28(Bisphenol A type epoxy resin, Kukdo chemical) and 1-imidazole as hardener. The anti-static solutions were coated on PI film as thickness of $0.1{\mu}m$. Surface resistivity of anti-static film containing conductive polymer became $10^{12}\Omega/\Box$ after 32 hours in $160^{\circ}C$. The surface resistivity of ATO grafted by GPTS / Epoxy coating layer remained as $10^{7.6}\Omega/\Box$ in $160^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. ATO grafted by GPTS / Epoxy coating layer coated on PI film was dipped in acetone for 7 days. The surface resistivity remained unchanged as $10^{7.6}\Omega/\Box$. The anti-static layer dipped in water solutions containing each KOH 10 wt % and $H_2SO_4$ 2 wt% was ultra-sonicated for 10 minutes per once until 30th. The surface resistance of anti-static layer containing ATO grafted by GPTS remained unchanged.
