  • EPR spectra of the high $T_c$ superconductor $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (YBCO) doped with $Pd^{2+} or Zn^{2+}$ have been measured at several temperatures and dopant concentrations. The spectral intensity of $YBa_2({Cu_{1-x}}{Pd_x})_3O_{7-y}$ is proportional to the dopant concentration. The behavior of $YBa_2(Cu_{1-x}Zn_x)_3O_{7-y}$ is quite different: the spectral intensity remains almost constant up to x=0.10 and then increases rapidly above x=0.10. The results are interpreted in terms of localized and antiferromagnetically spin-paired d holes in both CuO chain and planes. The $Pd_{2+}$ ion substitutes on the CuO chain consisting of "CuOCu dimers", and a $Cu_{2+}$ ion with an unpaired spin is gene rated for each $Pd_{2+}$ ion substituted. On the other hand, $Zn_{2+}$ substitutes on the CuO planes, and all or most of the spins in the two-dimensional plane manage to pair up in the region of low dopant concentration. When the dopant concentration exceeds a certain limit, it becomes more difficult for the spins to find partners, and the number of unpaired spins increases rapidly with increasing dopant concentration. The $Zn_{2+}$ ion is more effective than the $Pd_{2+}$ ion in suppressing the superconductivity of YBCO. This is attributed to the fact that $Zn_{2+}$ substitutes on the CuO planes which are mainly responsible for the superconductivity, while $Pd_{2+}$ substitutes on the CuO chain which is of secondary importance in the superconductivity.

  • The superconducting phase, $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{x}$ (YBCO), was in-situ deposited on the single crystal MgO substrates, using an aerosol decomposition process in a cold plasma reactor. The solubility and decomposition temperature of the chemical precursors, and the vapor pressures of the solvents, were determined to be the factors crucial to achieving a stoichiometric, crystalline YBCO phase. The deposition parameters for the YBCO phase were 0.3 to 2.7 kPa for the oxygen partial pressure and $800^{\circ}C$ to $940^{\circ}C$ for the substrate temperature. The optimum deposition conditions for the YBCO phase were observed along the CuO decomposition line.

  • YBa2Cu3O7-x(=YBCO) single crystals were grown by flux method and the growing process of crystals was investigated. YBCO and 3BaO-7CuO composition powders were mixed by the ratio of 25 : 75(wt%), and the mixtures were melted at 105$0^{\circ}C$ in a electric furnace with no temperature-gradient. Then the melt was cooled at a rate 2-1$0^{\circ}C$/h in the above furnace. YBCO single crystal plate with average size of $1.5\times$2.0$\times$0.1㎣ were obtained in the cavities between crucible and solidified ingot, and the single crystals were oriented to <001> direction. The ingots of flux parts were analyzed by XRD and EDS for the purpose of presuming the growing process of the crystals. It was assumed that the divorced eutectic reaction, by which YBCO crystals were grown first and then BaCuO2 and CuO crystals, occured in the case of cooling rate faster than 2$^{\circ}C$/h. When the cooling rate was 2$^{\circ}C$/h, it was assumed that quasi-equilibrium eutectic reaction occured, so that YBCO, BaCuO2 and CuO crystals were grown at the same time.

  • Fluorine-doped YBaS12TCuS13TOS17-xTFS1yT superconducting materials with y varing two orders of magnitude form 0.02 to 2.0 have been prepared by a sol-gel process by using metal nitrate salts, sodium hydroxide and sodium fluoride. Fluorine contents have been measured using an ion-selective electrode. All fluorine doped as reactant were found to be present in the resulted samples. From the observation of XRD it has been concluded that the samples with y 0.2 formed simply the single phase of perovskite structure, whereas those with y 0.5 yielded together some compounds such as BaFS12T, YFS13T and CuO in the resulted samples. The observation of solid state S019TF NMR has been carried out in order to check whether fluorine was actually incorporated into the lattice sites, and the experimental results revealed that the mole ratio of fluorine incorporated into the lattice sites of YBaS12TCuS13TOS17-xT was approximately 0.2 per mole of the compound. Also electrical resistivity measurement indicated that onset transition temperature has the tendency to increase slightly with increasing y in the dilute region as y 0.2.

  • The structural, electrical and magnetic properties were investigated for the high-Tc superconductor $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$, where x was 0.13. The results of temperature dependence of the resistivity and the magnetization in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.87}$ whose structure and phase are confirmed by arialysis of X-ray powder diffraction pattern have been reported. A very sharp superconductivity transition appears at 92K in the specimen whose chemical composition is determined from redox titration, strongly suggesting that this specimen consists of a single-phase superconductor. From the results of X-ray diffraction analysis, magnetization curves, levitation and resistance measurements, it is suggested that the observed superconductivity is bulk property in nature and that the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.87}$ phase is responsible for the superconductivity of the present reproducible specimen.

  • YBa$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{7-x}$ thin films for coated conductor application were deposited on a MgO single crystalline substrate by a metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) system of a vertical type using a single liquid source. The film uniformity was enhanced by controlling the gas shower head structure, the distance between the shower head and substrate, and the rotation of the substrate. The source mole ratio of Y(thd)$_3$: Ba(thd)$_2$: Cu(thd)$_2$ was changed for obtaining stoichiometric film. The phase formation, crystal orientation, surface morphology and film composition were investigated with different source mole ratios, and the critical temperature (T$_{c}$) was measured.red.

  • We have carried out an extended Huckel calculation to rationalize the role of $CuO_3$ chains and the size effect of the charged model clusters for the following charged model culsters : ${{Cu_6}{O_{21}}^{28-},\;{{Cu_6}{O_{22}}^{30-}\;,{{Cu_9}{O_{30}}^{39-}\;,{{Cu_9}{O_{32}}^{43-}\;,{{Cu_{12}{O_{38}}^{48-}\;,{{Cu_{15}{O_{50}}^{65-}\;,{{Cu_{18}{O_{54}}^{66-}\;,{{Cu_{18}{O_{55}}^{68-}\;,{{Cu_{24}{O_{70}}^{84-}\;and\;{{Cu_{27}{O_{78}}^{93-}$ for high-$T_c$ superconductor $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$: ${{Cu_6}{O_{18}}^{22-}\;,{{Cu_9}{O_{26}}^{31-}}\;,{{Cu_{12}{O_{32}}^{36-}\;,{{Cu_{15}{O_{42}}^{49-}\;,{{Cu_{18}{O_{46}}^{50-}\;,{{Cu_{24}{O_{60}}^{64-}\;and\;{{Cu_{27}{O_{66}}^{69-}$ for insulator $YBa_2Cu_3O_6$. The results show that the electronic structures and properties of the charged model clusters relating to high-$T_c$ superconductor are very sensitive to the size change of the clusters with various environmental effects, wherease those of the charged model clusters for insulator $YBa_2Cu_3O_6$ are monotonous to the size change. The $CuO_3$ chains along the b-direction may yield cooperative electronic coupling with the $CuO_2$ layers in determining both conducting and superconducting properties of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ system.
