Operating Properties of Resistive Superconducting fault Current Limiters with Various Pattern Shapes

  • Quench behavior of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) with various pattern shapes was investigated. The pattern shapes employed were meander, bi-spiral, and spital shapes of identical line width, gap and margin. SFCLS were fabricated from YBCO thin films grown on two-inch diameter Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates under the same conditions. The total length of current limiting paths was the shortest at the spital shape due to its larger useless space. Inductance component of SFCLs with the spiral shape was around two times as high as those of other two shapes. This is not desirable since impedance characteristics of existing power systems can be changed. Resistance rise of current limiting elements was low at a spiral shape before the whole quench completion, which may act as a disadvantage for simultaneous quench in serial connection between current limiting elements, but the temperature tended to have similar values at higher voltages. On the other hand, hi-spital shape was severe at insulation level between current limiting lines. When these aspects were considered, we concluded that a meander shape was appropriate to design for a resistive SFCL based on thin films except the concentration of electric field at edge areas of strip lines.

  • The quench characteristics of flux-lock type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiters(SFCL) was investigated, $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(YBCO) thin film was used as the current limiting elements of the flux-lock type SFCL. The quench characteristics of current limiting elements consisting of the flux-lock type SFCL was more improved than that of the resistive type SFCL.

Design and Characterization of HTS antenna array with sequential rotation array (순차적 순환배열을 이용한 고온초전도 배열 안테나 설계 및 특성해석)

  • We report the performance of a four-element, 11.67 GHz, high-Tc superconducting (HTS) microstrip antenna array with corporate feed network and circular polarization for direct broadcasting satellite (DBS) system. Our array antennas were designed and built on a 0.5 mm thick MgO substrate. To compare the superconducting antennas with normal conducting counterpart, One antenna pattern was fabricated from gold thin film, and a second pattern was fabricated from $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) superconducting thin film. To improve the axial ratio of circularly polarized arrays, sequential rotation technique were used. Efficiency, radiation pattern, return loss and bandwidth were measured for both antennas at room temperature and at cryogenic temperature. The array produced good circular polarization, and the gain of the array at 77 K, relative to a copper array at room temperature was approximately 1.54 dB. The measured return loss of our HTS antenna array was 35.79 dB at the resonant frequency of 11.67 GHz and The total effective bandwidth was about 3.4 %. The results showed that high-temperature superconductors, when used in microstrip arrays, improved the efficiency of the HTS antenna array for circularly polarization.

  • Superconducting fault currents(SFCLs) are expected to improve not only reliability but also stability of power systems. The analysis on current limiting operations of the flux-lock type SFCL, which consists of a flux-lock reactor wound an iron core and a YBCO thin film, was compared the open-loop with the closed-loop iron core of the subtractive polarity winding. In the SFCL, operation characteristics could be controlled by adjusting the inductances and the winding directions of the coils, then magnetic field induced in the iron core. The current limiting characteristics under the same experimental conditions were generated regardless of the iron core conditions. We confirmed that capacity of the SFCL was increased effectively by the closed-loop iron core. However, the power burden of the system could be lowered by the open-loop iron core.

  • In this study, superconducting coil arrangements and cryostat concept design were conducted for the development of 13.2kV/630A bifilar winding type high temperature superconducting(HTS) fault current limiter(FCL) with YBCO coated conductor(CC) wire. The coil consists of several layers with unique non-inductive solenoid winding method. Six types of HTS coil arrangements were investigated for the optimal insulation design of HTS FCL. And, conceptual design of cryostat was conducted for the decrement of thermal invasion and the prevention of low voltage insulation breakdown in the LHe which is used as pressurization gas in sub-cooling condition of liquid nitrogen(LN2). As the results, it was found that the modified suspended type cryostat with horizontal coil arrangement is beneficial to the insulation design of 13.2kV level bifilar winding type HTS FCL.

EPD Superconductor Film with Submicron YBCO on Ag Alloy

  • The submicron $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ powder was prepared by the sol-gel method. The particle size is distributed from 0.2 to 1.0 ${\mu}m$, which benefits to eliminate the micro-cracks formed in the $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ films deposited by electrophoresis. The powder was single phase of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ examined by X-ray diffraction. In the sol-gel process the citrate gel was formed from citric acid and nitrate solution of $Y_2O_3$, $Ba(NO_3)_2$ and CuO. When pH values were adjusted to 6.4-6.7, $Ba(NO_3)_2$ could be dissolved in the citrate solution completely. Appropriate evaporative temperature of the sol-gel formation is discussed. Acetone is used as electrophoreticsolution, in which some water and iodine (0.2 g/1) and polyethylene glycol (2 vol. %) are added. The concentrations of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ powders is 20g/l. The thickness of deposited film could be more than 50 ${\mu}m$ in 3 minutes of depositing time. The most EPD films could be 90K zero resistance and the Jc values were over 1000A/cm2 (0 H, 77 K).

  • We fabricated resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) based on YBCO thin films grown on 2-inch diameter saphire substrates Two SFCLs with nearly identical properties were connected in series to investigate the simultaneous quench. There was a slight difference in the rate of voltage increase between two SFCL units when they were operated independently. This difference. however, resulted in significantly unbalanced power dissipation between the units. This imbalance was removed by connecting a shunt resistor to an SFCL in parallel. The appropriate values of the shunt resistances were $80{\Omega}$ at $75 V_{rms}$. $100{\Omega}$ at $100 V_{rms}$ and $110{\Omega}$ at $120 V_{rms}$, respectively. Increased power input at high voltages also reduced the initial imbalance in power dissipation. but with increase in film temperature to higher than 200 K.

  • Recently, many studies have been reported on the magnetoresistance and Hall effect of REBCO thin films and bulk. The voltage interferes quench detection of high-temperature superconducting magnet and generates leakage current in no insulation high-temperature superconducting coil. Therefore, in this paper, experiments on magnetoresistance and Hall effect of commercial YBCO and GdBCO tapes have been carried out. As a result, anomalous voltages expected for the magnetoresistance and Hall effect of REBCO tapes were observed and analyzed. In addition, the voltage characteristics of REBCO have been identified, and the Hall coefficient are calculated for use in high magnetic field magnet applications.

Fabrication and Electrical Properities of Semiconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x thin Film or Application of IR Sensors (적외선 센서로의 응용을 위한 반도성 YBa2Cu3O7-x 박막의 제작 및 전기적 특성)

  • $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ thin films were fabricated by the spin-coating method on $SiO_2$/Si substrate using an alkoxide-based sol-gel method. The structural and electrical properties were investigated for various 1st annealing temperature. Due to the formation of the polycrystalline single phase, synthesis temperature was observed at around $720^{\circ}C-800^{\circ}C$. $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ thin films with the 1st annealing temperature of $450^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ showed the single XRD patterns without the second phase, such as $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$. The thickness of films was approximately $0.23{\mu}m{\sim}0.27{\mu}m$. Aerage grain size, resistance and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ thin films with the 1st annealing temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ were $0.27{\mu}m$, $59.7M{\Omega}$ and -3.7 %/K, respecvitely.

  • In this paper, we investigated the operational characteristics of the fault current limiting in the The flux-lock type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter. The flux-lock type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter was consisted of primary and secondary copper coils that flux was locked on iron core and YBCO thin film. The operational characteristic of a flux-lock type SFCL dependent on winding direction of coil 1 and coil 2, and the number of turns of coil 1 and coil 2, inductances of the coils, saturation in iron core, the properties of superconducting element etc. In this cases, we investigated the fault currents limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL when winding direction of coil 1 and coil 2 was subtractive polarity winding.
