$NaCaLa_{1-x}(MoO_4)_3:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ ternary molybdates with proper doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ (x = $Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}$ = 0.05 and $Yb^{3+}$ = 0.35, 0.40, 0.45 and 0.50) were successfully synthesized by microwave sol-gel method. Well-crystallized particles formed after heat-treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 16 h showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $3-5{\mu}m$. Under excitation at 980 nm, the UC intensities of the doped samples exhibited strong yellow emissions based on the combination of strong emission bands at 520-nm and 630-nm emission bands in the green and red spectral regions, respectively. The optimal $Yb^{3+}:Ho{3+}$ ratios were obtained at 9:1 and 10:1, as indicated by the composition-dependent quenching effect of the $Ho^{3+}$ ions. The pump power dependence of the upconversion emission intensity and the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of the phosphors were evaluated in detail.

We propose a Yb:YAG laser Q-switched by a semiconductor saturable absorber and a laser output coupler composed of a polarizer and a quarter-wave plate, and we investigate the output characteristics of the proposed Q-switched laser. We show that the laser power can be varied by rotation of the quarter-wave plate.
$NaLa_{1-x}(MoO_4)_2:Eu^{3+}/Yb^3$ phosphors with doping concentrations of $Eu^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ($x= Eu^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Eu^{3+}=0.05$, 0.1, 0.2 and $Yb^{3+}= 0.2$, 0.45) were successfully synthesized by the microwave-modified sol-gel method, and the upconversion and spectroscopic properties were investigated. Well-crystallized particles showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $2-5{\mu}m$. Under excitation at 980 nm, $NaLa_{0.5}(MoO_4)_2:Eu_{0.05}Yb_{0.45}$ particles exhibited a strong 525-nm emission band and a weak 550-nm emission band in the green region, and a very weak 665-nm emission band in the red region. The strong 525-nm emission in the green region corresponds to the $^7F_1{\rightarrow}^5D_1$ transition and the weak 550-nm emission in the green region corresponds to the $^7F_0{\rightarrow}^5D_2$ transition, while the very weak emission 665-nm band in the red region corresponds to the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_3$ transition. The Raman spectra of the doped particles indicated the domination of strong peaks at higher frequencies of 762, 890, 1358 and $1430cm^{-1}$ and weak peaks at lower frequencies of 323, 388 and $450cm^{-1}$ induced by the disorder of the $[MoO4]^{2-}$ groups with the incorporation of the $Eu^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ elements into the crystal lattice or by a new phase formation.
[ $Yb_2O_3$ ] films were successfully deposited on a cube-textured Ni and(100) $SrTiO_3$(STO) single crystal substrates by metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD) method using $H_2O$ vapor as an oxidant. $H_2O$ vapor was used in order to avoid the oxidation of Ni substrate. The working pressure and Ar flow rate were 10 Ton and 600 sccm, respectively. $Yb_2O_3$ films on STO were formed at high temperatures above $900^{\circ}C$. While XRD peaks from $Yb_2O_3$ were hardly detected at $900^{\circ}C$, the $Yb_2O_3$(400) texture was developed fur the films grown at deposition temperatures above $950^{\circ}C$. The AEM surface roughness of $Yb_2O_3$ film, grown on STO, was in the range of $6{\sim}10nm$ for the film deposited at $950^{\circ}C$ with a $H_2O$ vapor partial pressure of 5.5 Ton and deposition times of 3 and 5 mins. For cube-textured Ni substrate, both $Yb_2O_3$(222) and $Yb_2O_3$ (400) textures were developed textures at deposition temperatures above $850^{\circ}C$.
To genetically breed powerful multifunctional antagonistic bacteria, the urease gene of alkalophilic Bacillus pasteurii was transferred into Bacillus subtilis YB-70 which had been selected as a powerful biocontrol agent against root-rotting fungus Fusarium solani. Urease gene was inserted into the HindIII site of pGB215-110 and designated pGU266. The plasmid pGU266 containing urease gene was introduced into the B. subtilis YB-70 by alkali cation transformation system and the urease gene was very stably expressed in the transformant of B. subtilis YB-70(pGU266). The optimal conditions for the transfomation were also evaluated. From the in vitro antibiosis tests against F. solani, the antifungal activity of B. subtilis YB-70 containing urease gene was much efficient than that of the non-transformed strain. Genetic improvement of B. subtilis YB-70 by transfer of urease gene for the efficient control seemed to be responsible for enhanced plant growth and biocontrol efficacy by combining its astibiotic action and ammonia producing ability.
A strain YB914 was isolated from soil as a producer of the extracellular xylanase, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of oat spelt xylan. The strain YB914 was identified as Streptomyces sp. on the basis of its morphological, cultural and biochemical properties. The xylanase of culture filtrate was the most active at $55^{\circ}C$ and pH 5.5, and retained 80% of its maximum activity at the range of pH 4.5~7.0. In order to optimize the culture medium for xylanase production, ingredients of G.S.S medium were replaced by several carbohydrates. The carbohydrates such as oat spelt xylan, corn cob xylan, wheat bran and lactose increased the xylanase productivity of Streptomyces sp. YB914. However, xylanase production was greatly repressed by galactose or arabinose. The maximum xylanase productivity was reached to 48 U/mL in the modified medium containing 1% oat spelt xylan and 1.5% lactose.
Two genes encoding the mannanase of Bacillus sp. YB-1401 and B. amyloliquefaciens YB-1402, which had been isolated at acidic pH as mannanase producers, were each cloned into Escherichia coli, and sequenced. Both mannanase genes consisted of 1,080 nucleotides, encoding polypeptides of 360 amino acid residues. The deduced amino acid sequences of the two mannanase genes differed by four amino acid residues different, and were highly homologous to those of mannanases belonging to the glycosyl hydrolase family 26. Comparison of two mannanases produced from recombinant E. coli indicated that His-tagged mannanase of YB-1402 (HtMAN1402) was more stable than that of YB-1401 at acidic pH and high temperature. In particular, HtMAN1402 retained more than 50% of its activity at pH 3.0 after 4 h of pre-incubation, suggesting the enzyme is a valuable candidate for use as a feed additive. In addition, thermostability of the two mannanases was found to be enhanced by $Ca^{2+}$ ions.

A high-power Yb-doped femtosecond (fs) fiber laser at a repetition rate of 1.83 GHz is reported. By employing a 5-stage repetition rate multiplier, the repetition rate of the mode-locked master oscillator was multiplied from 57.1 MHz to 1.83 GHz. The ultrashort pulse output at 1.83 GHz was amplified in a two-stage Yb-doped fiber amplifier, leading to >100 W of fs laser output with a pulse duration of 290 fs. The theoretical pulse width along the fiber was simulated, showing that it was in good agreement with experimental results. Further improvement in power scaling is discussed.
Contact-only (COM) and dipolar-only (DOM) mixtures of the lanthanide shift reagents were prepared based on the Fi and Gi values deduced using individual Ln$(fod)_3$ (Ln = Pr, Nd, Eu, and Yb) and 4-picoline. The $F_i$ and $G_i$ values obtained directly by COM 1 and by DOM 1, which were appropriate mixture of Pr$(fod)_3$ and Eu$(fod)_3$, agreed well with those values obtained by experiments using individual Ln$(fod)_3$ shift reagents. Ei and Gi values obtained directly by COM 2 and by DOM 2, which were mixtures of Nd$(fod)_3$ and Yb$(fod)_3$, deviated from the expected values. The error was traced to the behavior of the ytterbium complexes.
The structural and electric properties of $Y_{1-x}$YbF$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-y}$(x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) have been investigated by using XRD(X-ray diffraction), TMA(thennomechanical analysis), NMR(nuclear magnetic resonance) analysis and four probe method. $Y_{1-x}$YbF$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-y}$ samples were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method using $Y_{2}$O$_{3}$, BaCO$_{3}$, CuO and YbF$_{3}$ power. TMA and high temperature XRD results shows that orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition occurs in the unfluorinated 1-2-3 sample while the phase change is not observed in the fluorinated 1-2-3 samples. Superconducting transition temperature(T$_{c}$) increases with increasing YbF$_{3}$ content ; T$_{c}$, of the sample reaching maximum of 102K for x=0.3, and then decreases with further increasing YbF$_{3}$ content. The structural analysis and T$_{c}$ results shows that the fluorine doping stabilize the orthorhombic phase, together with the increase in T$_{c}$.}$ c/.TEX> c/.
