Laser-assisted selective infiltration is a new method of building metal layers to make metal parts layer by layer, in which superheated microscopic metal droplets are infiltrated into a laser-preheated layer of microscopic metal powders. In this work, the selective infiltration of a low melting-point metal, Sn-37Pb wt%, was conducted to investigate the effects of such dominant parameters as superheating temperature, Nd:YAG laser power for preheating, substrate temperature, etc. The optimal conditions for successful selective infiltration of a single layer of microscopic metal powder were experimentally obtained
Cerium-activated yttrium aluminate ($Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$) exhibiting a garnet structure has been widely utilized in the production of light emitting diodes (LEDs) as a yellow emitting phosphor. The commercialized yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) phosphor is typically synthesized by a solid-state reaction, which produces irregular shape particles with a size of several tens of micrometers by using the top-down method. To control the shape and size of particles, which had been the primary disadvantage of top-down synthetic methods, we synthesized YAG:Ce nanoparticles with a diameter of 500 nm using a coprecipitation method under the atmospheric pressure without the use of template or special equipment. The precursor particles were formed by refluxing an aqueous solution of the nitrate salts of Y, Al, and Ce, urea, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (55 K) at $100^{\circ}C$ for 12 h. YAG:Ce nanoparticles were formed by the calcination of precursor particles at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 10 h under atmospheric conditions. The phase identification, microstructure, and photoluminescent properties of the products were evaluated by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, absorption spectrum and photoluminescence analyses.

For white light emitting diode (LED) applications, it has been reported that Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce) in nano-sized phosphor performs better than it does in micro-sized particles. This is because nano-sized YAG:Ce can reduce internal light scattering when coated onto a blue LED surface. Recently, there have been many reports on the synthesis of nano-sized YAG particles using bottom-up method, such as co-precipitation method, sol-gel process, hydrothermal method, solvothermal method, and glycothermal method. However, there has been no report using top-down method. Top-down method has advantages than bottom-up method, such as large scale production and easy control of doping concentration and particle size. Therefore, in this study, nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors were synthesized by a high energy beads milling process with varying beads size, milling time and milling steps. The beads milling process was performed by Laboratory Mill MINICER with ZrO2 beads. The phase identity and morphology of nano-sized YAG:Ce were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. By controlling beads size, milling time and milling steps, we synthesized a size-tunable and uniform nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors which average diameters were 100, 85 and 40 nm, respectively. After milling, there was no impurity and all of the peaks were in good agreement with YAG (JCPDS No. 33-0040). Luminescence and quantum efficiency (QE) of nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors were measured by fluorescence spectrometer and QE measuring instrument, respectively. The synthesized YAG:Ce absorbed light efficiently in the visible region of 400-500 nm, and showed single broadband emission peaked at 550 nm with 50% of QE. As a result, by considering above results, high energy beads milling process could be a facile and reproducible synthesis method for nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors.
The effect of $BaF_2$ flux in $Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$(YAG:Ce) formation was investigated. Phase transformation of $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$(YAG) was characterized by using XRD, SEM, and TEM-EDS, and it was revealed that the sequential formation of the $Y_4Al_2O_9$(YAM), $YAlO_3$(YAP) and $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$(YAG) in the temperature range of 1000-1500$^{\circ}C$. Single phase of YAG was revealed from 1300$^{\circ}C$. In order to find out the effect of $BaF_2$ flux, three modeling experiments between starting materials (1.5$Al_2O_3$-2.5$Y_2O_3$, $Y_2O_3$-$BaF_2$, and $Al_2O_3$-$BaF_2$) were done. These modeling experiments showed that the nucleation process occurs via the dissolution-precipitation mechanism, whereas the grain growth process is controlled via the liquid-phase diffusion route. YAG:Ce phosphor particles prepared using a proposed technique exhibit a spherical shape, high crystallinity, and an emission intensity. According to the experimental results conducted in this investigation, 5% of $BaF_2$ was the best concentration for physical, chemical and optical properties of $Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$(YAG:Ce) that is approximately 10-15% greater than that of commercial phosphor powder.
Attempts were made to improve mechanical properties of zirconia-based electrolyte by preparing yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia/alumina composite. It was performed by precipitating Yag precursor in aqueous m-zirconia slurry. The powder was separated and then followed by heat treatment with expecting yttria to react with m-$ZrO_2$ to give yttria stabilized zirconia and alumina to be dispersed homogeneously. When 17.8wt% Yag(6.3mol% $Y_2O_3$) was used, fracture toughness and strength were substantially improved from 1.44MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 270Mpa for YZ8Y to 3.62MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 447MPa respectively, but electrical conductivity at $^{\circ}$C in air was decreased from 0.126 to 0.057${\Omega}^{-1}cm^{-1}$. It seemed due to the presence of small amount of tetragonal zirconia. But when 21.58wt% Yag(8.0mol% $Y_2O_3$) was added, fracture toughness of 2.93MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and flexural strength of 388MPa were obtained with electrical conductivity of ${\Omega}^{-1}cm^{-1}$.
In this study, we synthesized two $Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ phosphors ($7{\mu}m$-sized and $2{\mu}m$-sized YAG) with different sizes by controlling particles sizes of starting materials of the phosphors for white LED. In the smaller one ($2{\mu}m$-sized YAG), its photoluminescence intensity in the reflective mode was 63 % that of the bigger one ($7{\mu}m$-sized YAG); the quantum efficiencies were 93 % and 70 % for the smaller and the bigger ones. Two kinds of white LED packages with the same color coordinates were fabricated with a blue package (chip size $53{\times}30$) and two phosphors. The luminous flux of the white LED package with the smaller YAG phosphor was 92 % of that with the bigger one, indicating that the quantum efficiency of phosphor dispersed inside LED package was higher than that of the pure powder. It was consistently confirmed by the optical simulation (LightTools 6.3). It is notable according to the optical simulation that the white LED with the smaller phosphor showed 24 % higher luminous efficiency. If the smaller one had the same quantum efficiency as the bigger one (~93 %). Therefore, it can be suggested that the higher luminous efficiency of white LED can be possible by reducing the particle size of the phosphor along with maintaining its similar quantum efficiency.

Influence of hexamethyldisilazane(HMDS) in post processing technique by using n-butanol azeotropic distillation on the luminescence properties of YAG:Ce nanophosphor were studied. The organic solvent(n-butanol) azeotropic distillation which prevent powders from conglobation since lager molecules decrease the surface tension and more complete replace the residual water in the precipitate. HMDS that had larger molecules than that of n-butanol was added in azeotropic distillation. The phosphor synthesized from n-butanol azeotropic distillation exhibited lower agglomerate and better photoluminescence properties than that from HMDS added heterogeneous azeotropic distillation.
Yttrium aluminum garnet, $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ (YAG) is an extensively used solid-state laser host material. YAG nanocrystals were synthesized using low-temperature glycol method, a modified sol-gel method performed at low temperature that consists of a mixture of salts that are mostly nitrates in an aqueous media. Single-phase nanocrystalline YAG was obtained at $850^{\circ}C$, which is a much lower temperature than with other techniques such as a wet-chemical technique. The structural characterization is done by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A crystallite size range of 20-50 nm was observed for the materials prepared at $850-950^{\circ}C$.

Metal three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies are mainly classified as powder bed fusion (PBF) and direct energy deposition (DED) methods according to the method of application of a laser beam to metallic powder. The DED method can be used to fabricate fine and hard 3D metallic structures by applying a strong laser beam to a thin layer of metallic powder. The PBF method involves slicing 3D graphics to be a certain height, laminating metal powders, and making a 3D structure using a laser. While the DED method has advantages such as laser cladding and metallic welding, it causes problems with low density when 3D shapes are created. The PBF method was introduced to address the structural density issues in the DED method and makes it easier to produce relatively dense 3D structures. In this paper, thin lines were produced by using PBF 3D printers with stainless-steel powder of roughly $30{\mu}m$ in diameter with a galvano scanner and fiber-transferred Nd:YAG laser beam. Experiments were carried out to find the optimal conditions for the width of a line depending on the processing times, laser power, spot size, and scan speed. The optimal conditions were two scanning processes in one line structure with a laser power of 30 W, spot size of $28.7{\mu}m$, and scan speed of 200 mm/s. With these conditions, a minimum width of about $85.3{\mu}m$ was obtained.
Effect of mixing homogeneity in powder mixtures of Si3N4 and sintering additive (10mol% YAG) prepared by coprecipitation on the mechanical properties of pressureless-sintered body was investigated. Sintering was performed in a graphtie furnace at 1850℃ for 0.5h under 0.15MPa N2 atmosphere using Si3N4 powder bed. Results from the measurement of Young's modulus, Vickers hardness, 4-point-bending strength, and KIC for the coprecipitation-treated (CP) and the mechanically-mixed specimens(MM) showed that a remarkable improvement in flexural strength and Weibull parameter can be achieved for the CPspecimens: (677±68MPa, 12.0) for CP samples and (539±108MPa, 5.5) for MM. Other properties were almost same irrespective of preparation methods.
