  • Most commercial white LED lamps use blue chip coated with yellow emitting phosphor. The use of blue excitable red and green phosphors is expected to improve the CRI. Several phosphors, such as $SrGa_2S_4:Eu^{2+}$ and $(Sr,Ba)SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$, have been suggested in the past as green components. However, there are issues of the sensitivity and stability of such phosphors. Here, we describe gallium substituted $YAG:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor, as a green emitter. YAG structures are already accepted by the industry, for their stability and efficiency. LEDs with improved CRI could be fabricated by choosing $Y_3Al_4GaO_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ (green and yellow), and $SrS:Eu^{2+}$ (red) phosphors, along with blue chip. Also, the effect of a slight change in chip wavelength is studied, for two phosphor-coated w-LEDs. The reduction in particle size of the coated phosphors also gives improved w-LED characteristics.

  • We have synthesized bluish-green, highly-efficient $BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$ and $(Ba,Sr)Si_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors through a conventional solid state reaction method using metal carbonate, $Si_3N_4$, and $Eu_2O_3$ as raw materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of these phosphors revealed that a $BaSi_2O_2N_2$ single phase was obtained. The excitation and emission spectra showed typical broadband excitation and emission resulting from the 5d to 4f transition of $Eu^{2+}$. These phosphors absorb blue light at around 450 nm and emit bluish-green luminescence, with a peak wavelength at around 495 nm. From the results of an experiment involving Eu concentration quenching, the relative PL intensity was reduced dramatically for Eu = 0.033. A small substitution of Sr in place of Ba increased the relative emission intensity of the phosphor. We prepared several white LEDs through a combination of $BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$, YAG:$Ce^{3+}$, and silicone resin with a blue InGaN-based LED. In the case of only the YAG:$Ce^{3+}$-converted LED, the color rendering index was 73.4 and the efficiency was 127 lm/W. In contrast, in the YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ and $BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$-converted LED, two distinct emission bands from InGaN (450 nm) and the two phosphors (475-750 nm) are observed, and combine to give a spectrum that appears white to the naked eye. The range of the color rendering index and the efficiency were 79.7-81.2 and 117-128 lm/W, respectively. The increased values of the color rendering index indicate that the two phosphor-converted LEDs have improved bluish-green emission compared to the YAG:Ce-converted LED. As such, the $BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor is applicable to white high-rendered LEDs for solid state lighting.

  • This work presents a novel lighting technology based on a YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphor converter with micro line lenticular structure, to accompany an array of bare LED chips on a board. This technology is especially effective in TFT-LCD backlight applications as it offers the advantages of high light radiation efficiency, low color deviation, uniform luminance distribution and compact backlight thickness. Additionally, the proposed configuration is low-cost, can be manufactured quickly, and can be mass-produced economically.

  • Influence of hexamethyldisilazane(HMDS) in post processing technique by using n-butanol azeotropic distillation on the luminescence properties of YAG:Ce nanophosphor were studied. The organic solvent(n-butanol) azeotropic distillation which prevent powders from conglobation since lager molecules decrease the surface tension and more complete replace the residual water in the precipitate. HMDS that had larger molecules than that of n-butanol was added in azeotropic distillation. The phosphor synthesized from n-butanol azeotropic distillation exhibited lower agglomerate and better photoluminescence properties than that from HMDS added heterogeneous azeotropic distillation.

  • Two white light emitting diodes(LEDs) were fabricated by using two kinds of yellow phosphor, YAG:Ce and $(Sr,Ba)_2SiO4:Eu$, and their spectroscopic properties were analyzed as a function of temperature from room temperature to $80^{\circ}C$. The asymmetric double sigmoidal function was applied to both blue and yellow peaks of the emitting spectrum to obtain the center wavelength, the amplitude, the half width, and the skewness parameters. According to this analysis, the center wavelength of the blue peak shifted to longer wavelength while that of the yellow peak shifted to shorter wavelength. In addition, some of the skewness parameters were found to increase upon heating, which indicates that spectrum asymmetry becomes enhanced at higher temperatures. The changes in the color coordinates and the luminous efficacy were larger for the case of silicate-based white LED. These results suggest that the silicate-based white LED is inferior to the YAG-based white LED from the viewpoint of color stability, efficacy and color rendering index.

  • In this research, a 6W white LED package with a Glass Remote Phosphor was developed to improve the life of an LED package. The Glass Remote Phosphor was fabricated by the Phosphor in Glass (PiG) method, wherein phosphor YAG:Ce was mixed with glass frit and then heat treated. A paste with 75wt.% of a phosphor substance and 25wt.% glass frit was coated on a glass substrate two times using the screen-printing technique and heat-treated at $800^{\circ}C$ ; this structure gave a luminous efficacy of 136.1lm/W, color rendering index of 74Ra, and color temperature of 5,342K, thus satisfying the requirements as a light source for lighting. Moreover, an IES LM-80 accelerated life test was conducted on the same LED package for 6,000h in order to estimate the L70 lifetime based on IES TM-21. The results showed guaranteed lifetimes of 213,000h at $55^{\circ}C$, 245,000h at $85^{\circ}C$, and 209,000h at $95^{\circ}C$.

  • LEDs which have many merits are widely used in the field of light devices, and have rapidly replaced old light devices such as incandescent or fluorescent lamps. Long life, on the order of 50,000 to 100,000 hours, is one of the key features of light emitting diodes(LEDs) that has attracted the lighting community to this technology. High Power white LEDs have yet to demonstrate this capability. This paper planed accelerated life test that has two factor(temperature, current) and two levels. Finally, using ALTA programs, we estimated the common shape parameter of Weibull distribution, life-stress relationship, B10 life and accelerating factors.

  • In order to develop new yellow phosphor that emit efficiently under the 450 - 470 nm excitation range, we have synthesized a $Eu^{2+}$-activated $Sr_3SiO_5$ yellow phosphor and investigated an attempt to develop white LEDs by combining it with a InGaN blue LED chip (460 nm). Two distinct emission bands from the InGaN-based LED and the $Sr_3SiO_5$:Eu phosphor are clearly observed at 460 nm and at 570 nm, respectively. These two emission bands combine to give a spectrum that appears white to the naked eye. Our results showed that InGaN (460 nm chip)-based $Sr_3SiO_5$:Eu exhibits a better luminous efficiency than that of the industrially available product InGaN (460 nm chip)-based YAG:Ce.

  • The thiogallate phosphors which are well known for a long time as phosphor materials for CRT or EL device were reported. Those have high luminescent properties at long-wavelength region. Among those phosphors, the samples with divalent europium doped CaGa2S4 were prepared by a simple process under the reduction atmosphere $(5%\;H_2/\;95%\;N_2)$ without toxic gas such as H2S or CS2. The prepared phosphor shows a higher luminescent efficiency (about 120%) than that of $YAG:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor. Consequently, this phosphor is possible to be applicable to white LED lamp because of the high luminescent efficiency.

  • LEDs are considered to be an alternative for enhancement of energy efficiency, applied for numerous areas such as display, automotive headlight not only lights. Yellow phosphor is generally utilized with blue LEDs to generate WLED, $Y_3Al_{5}O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ is typically used as the yellow phosphor. The phosphor, mixed with epoxy resin, has been used by being spread and hardened on the blue LED chip. This paste-based packaging gives rise to problems of degradation of phosphor by heat and decrease of luminous efficiency. Although phosphor plate is used instead of the epoxy-phosphor mixture to solve these problems, loss of luminous efficacy by total internal reflection inside the plate also should be solved. In this study, we coated the side of the plate with silver as one of the solution.
