Effect of Nitrogen Treatment on the Structure and Magnetic Properties of $RuSr_2(EuCe)Cu_2O_z$ Compound (질소 열처리에 따른 $RuSr_2(EuCe)Cu_2O_z$ 계의 구조 및 자기적 특성)

  • Two $RuSr_2(EuCe)Cu_2O_z$ samples (as prepared and after $N_2$ treatment) have been investigated by thermogravimetric (TC) analysis, high-resolution x-ray powder diffraction and magnetization measurements. TG measurements which were carried out in $H_2/Ar$ atmosphere showed that the $N_2$ treatment of the as-prepared sample at $650^{\circ}C$ for 2h leads to a decrease in the oxygen content z by about 0.25. This oxygen depletion was accompanied by an increase in the magnetic transition temperature from 54.0 K to 114.9 K. This magnetic behavior is discussed in connection with the results of Rietveld analysis of the x-ray diffraction data which showed that the $N_2$ treatment resulted in both a significant increase in the rotation angle of the $RuO_6$ octahedra and a decrease in c-lattice parameter of the sample.

Effect of Flywheel Weight on the Vibration of Diesel Engine (플라이휠 중량(重量)이 디젤 기관(機關)의 진동(振動)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Most of small size diesel engines are widely used with the same size and weight flywheel in the levels of 6.0kW and 7.5kW. This study was conducted to obtain basic data which affect the engine performance of the power tiller. The flywheel weight was considered as a major factor in this research. Basically, fuel consumption ratio, motoring loss, torque, vibration and mechanical efficiency of the engine were measured and analyzed on four levels of flywheel weight, 32.2, 29.4, 26.2 and $24.2kg_f$, respectively. Results were obtained as follows: 1. The weights of flywheel were $23.7kg_f$ from design program of JSME and $24.5kg_f$ from ASME and SAE design criteria. Therefore, the flywheel weight of $32.2kg_f$ might be reduced about $8kg_f$ in 7.5kW engine. 2. The rated outputs of 6.0kW and 7.5kW engine were actually 7.43kW and 7.85kW, respectively. When flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.2kg_f$, outputs were increased from 7.43kW to 7.70kW in 6.0kW engine and from 7.85kW to 8.25kW in 7.5kW engine. 3. When the flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.2kg_f$, fuel consumption ratio was decreased from 300.8 to 296.8g/kW-hr in 6.0kW engine and also from 313.6 to 312.8g/kW-hr in 7.5 kW engine, respectively. 4. When the flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.2kg_f$, mechanical efficiency of engine was increased from 76.1% to 76.8% in 6.0kW engine and also from 76.7% to 77.0% in 7.5kW engine, respectively. 5. When the flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.2kg_f$, vibration was decreased at X-axis and Z-axis in 6.0kW engine, however, slightly increased at Y-axis in 6.0kW engine and at all axes in 7.5kW engine. 6. When the flywheel weight was reduced from $32.2kg_f$ to $24.4kg_f$ motoring loss was decreased from 2.33kW to 1.75kW in 6.0kW engine and also from 2.46kW to 1.84kW in 7.5kW engine.

Thermal Properties of Granite for Installation of Underground Heat Exchanger (지중 열교환기 설계를 위한 화강암의 열물성 연구)

  • Thermal conductivities (TC) of 57 Jurassic muscovitic granite samples (KIGAM) and 149 porphyritic granite samples (Yeonki: BE-2, BE-3) were measured with LFA-447. Ranges of TC values are $2.429{\sim}3.878$ W/mK (KIGAM), $2.220{\sim}3.767$ W/mK (Yeonki, BE-2) and $2.019{\sim}3.990$ W/mK (Yeonki, BE-3); arithmetic means are 2.924 W/mK (KIGAM), 2.907 W/mK (Yeonki, BE-2), and 2.881 W/mK (Yeonki, BE-3), respectively. In this study, harmonic mean values were calculated to estimate the average value of TC. Harmonic mean values are 2.883 W/mK (KIGAM), 2.886 W/mK (Yeonki, BE-2), and 2.866 W/mK (Yeonki, BE-3), respectively. Heat extraction rates of a borehole heat exchanger strongly depend on TC values. Heat-extraction rates from re values are expected to be a little lower than 84 W/m in all sites. However, considering ground water flow, it is expected that actual heat extraction rate would be higher than the expected value.

  • $SrPd_2Ge_2$ single crystals were grown by self-flux method. Several shiny plate-like single crystals were obtained. The crystal structure and lattice parameters were characterized using the x-ray diffractometor, which indicates the crystals are in a single phase of $ThCr_2Si_2$-type. We confirmed superconducting transition temperature at 2.7 K by measuring magnetization and electrical resistivity.

  • The sulfur-iodine thermochemical water splitting process of GA(General atomic) cycle was studied to produce hydrogen from water by $H_2-I_2-SO_2$ reactions. The experimental scale was 500g based on iodine. The reaction took 100 minutes, products could be separated two liquid phases due to their density difference:HI solution had a density of 2.39~2.61g/cc, and $H_2SO_4$ solution had 1.37~1.38g/cc. The condition of reaction was when weight ratio of $I_2/H_2O$ was 2/1 resulting in good phase separation and productivity.

  • RF-magnetron sputtering 방법으로 형성한 $BaTa_2O_6$의 공정변수에 따른 전기, 광학적 특성변화를 관찰하여 $BaTa_2O_6$ 박막의 TFELD(thin film electroluminescent display) 절연막으로서 응용 가능성을 연구하였다. $BaTa_2O_6$ 박막의 유전특성은 증착시의 $O_2$ 함량과 sputtering 압력의 변화에는 큰 영향을 받지 않으나 기판온도에는 영향을 받는 것으로 확인되었다. 이들 공정변수를 가변하여 실험한 결과, $BaTa_2O_6$ 박막 형성의 최적조건으로 플라즈마 압력을 6 mtorr, sputtering gas 내의 $O_2$ 혼합비율은 40%, 기판온도는 $100^{\circ}C$로 결정하였다. 이상의 조건에서 제조된 $BaTa_2O_6$ 박막은 10.2 ${\mu}C/cm^2$의 매우 우수한 성능지수를 보였다. 이상의 $BaTa_2O_6$ 박막을 하부절연층으로, 절연파괴강도가 높은 $SiO_xN_y$를 상부 절연층으로 사용하여 제조된 EL 소자는 1 kHz, 삼각파 구동시 발광 임계전압은 약 32 volts, 최대휘도는 54 $cd/m^2$으로 측정되었다.

Cyclooxygenase-2 as a Molecular Target for Cancer Chemopreventive Agents

  • Recently, considerable attention has been focused on the role of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in the carcinogenesis as well as in inflammation. Improperly overexpressed COX-2 has been observed in many types of human cancers and transformed cells in culture. Thus, it is conceivable that targeted inhibition of abnormally or improperly up-regulated COX-2 provides one of the most effective and promising strategies for cancer prevention. A ubiquitous eukaryotic transcription factor, NF-kB is considered to be involved in regulation of COX-2 expression. Furthermore, extracellular-regulated protein kinase and p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase appear to be key elements of the intracellular signaling cascades involved in NF-kB activation in response to a wide array of external stimuli. Certain chemopreventive phytochemicals suppress activation of NF-kB by blocking one or more of the MAP kinases, which may contribute to their inhibitory effects on COX-2 induction. One of the plausible mechanisms by which chemopreventive phytochemicals inhibit NF-kB activation involves suppression of degradation of the inhibitory unit I kB, which hampers subsequent translocation of p65, the functionally active subunit of NF-kB.

  • A set {a1, a2, …, am} of positive integers is called a Diophantine m-tuple if aiaj + 1 is a perfect square for all 1 ≤ i < j ≤ m. In this paper, we find the structure of a torsion group of elliptic curves Ek constructed by a Diophantine triple {F2k, F2k+2, 4F2k+1F2k+2F2k+3}, and find all integer points on the elliptic curve under assumption that rank(Ek(ℚ)) = 2.

X-ray Absorption and Photoemission Spectroscopy Study of Nd1/2A1/2Mn1-yCryO3(A=Ca, Sr)

  • Valence states and electronic structures of Cr-doped $Nd_{1/2}A_{1/2}Mn_{1-y}Cr_{y}O_3$(NAMO; A=Ca, Sr) manganites have been investigated using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (PES). All the Cr-doped NAMO systems exhibit the clear metallic Fermi edges in the Mn $e_{g}$ PES spectra near $E_{F}$. The spectral intensity at $E_{F}$ is higher for Cr-doped N $d_{l}$ 2/S $r_{l}$ 2/Mn $O_3$(NSMO) than for Cr-doped N $d_{l}$ 2/C $a_{l}$ 2/Mn $O_3$ (NCMO), reflecting the stronger metallic nature for NSMO than for NCMO. The measured Cr 2p XAS spectra are found to be very similar to that of C $r_2$ $O_3$, indicating that Cr ions in Cr-doped NAMO are in the trivalent C states ( $t^3$$_{2g}$). The Cr 2p XAS data are consistent with the Cr 3d PES spectra located at ∼1.3 eV below $E_{F}$ and having no emission near $E_{F}$.
