  • The present paper describes an experimental work to investigate a transonic resonance in supersonic jet that is discharged from a convergent-divergent nozzle. When the nozzle m: at low nozzle pressure ratios, the shock occurs within the divergent section of the nozzle. The transonic resonance of a jet flow is generated by an emission of strong acoustic tones due to the unsteadiness of the shock. A Schlieren optical system is used to visualize the supersonic jet flow In order to specify the flow resonance of a jet, acoustic measurements are performed to obtain noise spectra. The acoustic characteristics of transonic resonace are compared with those of screech tones. The results obtained show that unlike screech frequency, the transonic reso- nace frequency somewhat increases with increasing the nozzle pressure ratio.

  • The effects of vortex generators, in the form of small tabs projecting into the flow at the axisymmetric supersonic nozzle exit and triangular thin tapes attached on the inner surface at the nozzle exit, on the characterixtics of supersonic mixing enhancements are experimentally investigated. Delta-shaped tabs as small as 1% of the nozzle exit area produce strong counter-rotating vortices, and is found to produce significant effects on the jet flowfield downstream of the nozzle. The effects is larger on the under-expanded cases than over- and perfect-expanded cases. Nozzle inner surface roughness also can do a role of centerline pressure decay for highly under-expanded jet cases. The effects of the angle of tabs with respect to flow direction are also investigated.

  • The spray characteristics of jet in crossflow (JICF) to improve the atomization and mixing characteristics of liquid Jet, while minimizing the impact on crossflow, were studied experimentally. By varying the temperature, velocity, pressure of crossflow and the speed, pressure of liquid Jet, the spray boundary (outer boundary, inner boundary) with the change of crossflow and liquid jet momentum ratio (q) were measured and led the experimental formula, compared with the results of previous work. Specifically, when the jet penetration with the shape of injector were measured, in the case of dual orifice Injector, under the influence of front orifice, the jet penetration of back orifice was improved approximately 18% ($L_h$ = 4 mm), compared with single orifice injector.

  • Supersonic jet issuing from a nozzle invariably cause high-frequency noises. These consist of three principal components ; the turbulent mixing noise, the broadband shock-associated noise, and the screech tone. In present study, it was experimentally investigated to the effect of nozzle lip thickness on the characteristics of supersonic jet noise. The convergent-divergent nozzle of a design Mach number 2.0 was used in experiment. With three different nozzle-lip thicknesses, the jet pressure ratio was varied in the range between 2.0 and 12.0. Acoustic measurements were conducted by microphones in an anechoic room, and the major structures of the supersonic jets were visualized by a Schlieren optical system to investigate the effect of nozzle lip thickness. The measured results show that the characteristics of supersonic jet noise, such as overall sound pressure level (OASPL) and screech frequency, strongly depend upon the thickness of nozzle-lip.

  • The noise sources of a tip-jet driven rotor can be separated by rotor blade noise and jet noise. The rotor blade noise consists of thickness noise, loading noise, nonlinear quadrupole noise, and jet noise is divided into nozzle momentum noise and jet radiation noise. The flow analysis for the prediction of rotor blade noise is performed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, and the noise source of the rotor blade noise is identified by simultaneously applying the permeable and impermeable surface based FW-H (Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings) acoustic analogy. The nozzle momentum noise is obtained by permeable surface FW-H, and jet radiation noise is predicted by using empirical method for the fixed-wing jet. Both of jet noises use nozzle exit condition for noise analysis. The accuracy of the technique is verified based on the noise measurements of the tip-jet driven rotor, and the unique noise characteristics of the tip-jet driven rotor is confirmed by spectrum analysis.

  • Results of a numerical simulation of a flowing of the underwater vehicles hull with the pump-jet nozzle are presented. It was calculate velocity distributions coefficients of the lift force the longitudinal moment of the hull with the pump-jet nozzle and isolated hull for some values of angle of attack. It was shown that the area of the influence of the nozzle on the velocities distribution of the hull and character of changing of coefficients of the lift force and the longitudinal moment and their derivatives depending on angle of attack.

  • It has been well known that the major feature of compressible flow fields might be different depending on their formation processes. The objectives of the present study is to investigates the effect of jet development on the time history of supersonic jet flow field, accompanying nonequilibrium condensation. Especially, the behaviors of Mach disk diameter and location in a supersonic moist air jet are presented in terms of nozzle pressure ratio and initial relative humidity. The relative humidity of moist air is controlled at the nozzle supply, and the nozzle pressure ratio is varied to obtain the moderately underexpanded flows at the exit of the nozzle, installed in an indraft wind tunnel. It is found that at the same pressure ratio the Mach disk diameter increases with the initial relative humidity, while moves further upstream. Furthermore, the values of Mach disk diameter and location for increasing pressure ratio show larger than those for increasing.

  • Thrust vectoring control by injection of secondary jet inside a convergent-divergent supersonic nozzle was studied by both experimentally and computationally. For various stagnation pressure of the secondary jet injected at a specific location(12 mm-downstream of throat) in the divergent section of nozzle, the characteristics of thrust vectoring were observed. Present numerical results were compared with previous investigators' results and Schlieren flow visualizations for the identical boundary conditions, and it showed a qualitatively good agreement. It was also noticed that the characteristics of thrust vectoring is strongly related to the reflection structure of oblique shock inside nozzle, ie., the pressure ratio of the secondary jet, SPR.

  • An experimental study on supersonic jets produced by supersonic nozzles at low operating pressure ratio is conducted. In the present experiments, particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to quantitatively specify the jet flowfield, and a color Schlieren optical method was applied to observe the same jets qualitatively. Convergent-divergent nozzles were used to generate the jet flow with design Mach numbers of 1.5 and 1.8. Nozzle pressure ratios (NPRs) were varied from 4 to 7. A good comparison of the jet size from the Schlieren images with the theoretical values is obtained. The obtained images clearly showed the major features of the under-expanded jet and over-expanded jet.

  • In a previous paper, we have examined the effects of nozzle configuration and jet to jet spacing on the heat transfer of 1 row of circular water jets. In this paper, experiments have been conducted to obtain the effects of nozzle to target plate distances on the heat transfer of 1 row of 3 jets and 1 row of 5 jets. The nozzle configurations are Cone type, Reverse cone type and Vertical circular type. Nozzle to target plate distance H was varied from 16 mm(H/D=2) to 80mm(H/D=10). For fixed value of mass flow rate and nozzle to target plate distance, larger values of average Nusselt number were obtained for the smaller jet to jet spacing. For the array of water jets, the average heat transfer was decreased slightly with increasing nozzle to target plate distance at low jet velocity of $\textrm{V}_{o}$=3 m/s. However, except for $\textrm{V}_{o}$=8 m/s of 1 row of 5 jets, it was increased with increasing nozzle to target plate distance at high jet velocity of $\textrm{V}_{o}$$\geq$6m/s. We proposed to apply the nozzle configuration of maximum average heat transfer to each nozzle to target plate distance for 1 row of 3 jets, and, it was Reverse cone type nozzle for 1 row of 5 jets(Reynolds number$\geq$36000).
