The processes and the kinetics of the lithium intercalation into the spin coated $V_2O_5$ xerogel prepared by the sol-gel processing have been studied employing impedance analyzer. Homogeneous and quasi-isotropic thin films of the xerogel can be obtained as a result of random distribution of the $V_2O_5$ gels on the substrate by the use of the spin coating. Effective diffusion coefficient and charge transfer resistance vary more than one order of magnitude at high and low lithium composition in $V_2O_5$ xerogel, respectively.
SiO$_2$ and PDMS/SiO$_2$ xerogels which are derived PDMS into TEOS have been synthesized by sol-gel process and controlled pore size and distribution through 2 step acid/base catalyzed processes using HCI and NH$_4$OH as a catalyst. In HCl catalyzed SiO$_2$ and PDMS/SiO$_2$ xerogels, pH and gellation time of xerogel were 2.3~2.5 and 12~13 days, respectively, and the shape of xerogel was identified to pellet type and column type. Under acidic condition of final reaction solution, the hydrolysis rate is accelerating, resulting in long gel times. The shape of xerogel is pellet type. In contrast, under less acidic condition, the condensation rate is accelerating, resulting in shorter gel times and the shape of xerogel is column type. The surface area and average Pore size were changed 400$\rightarrow$600($\m^2$/g) and 15$\rightarrow$28$\AA$, respectively, depending to the increase of the mole ratio of HCl/NH$_4$OH, and represented uniform pore size distribution. It is that all the alkoxide groups are hydrolyzed by HCl after the first step and the condensation rate is enhanced by NH$_4$OH. The regular backbone structures of silica are formed at low temperature and the uniform pores are produced by heat treatment.
We have performed a study on the electrochemical characteristics and nuclear ($^7Li$) magnetic resonance of $V_2O_5$ xerogels that have been synthesized by the sol-gel reaction of $V_2O_5$ powder with hydrogen peroxide. NMR measurements revealed that chemical shift of $Li^+$ ions varied as lithium ions were inserted into $V_2O_5$ xerogel and that several different sites for $Li^+$ ions existed in the $V_2O_5$ xerogel structure. The electrochemical properties of the xerogel electrodes did not depend much upon the concentration of $V_2O_5$ and HCl that were used for the synthesis of $V_2O_5$ gels. The specific capacity of $V_2O_5$ xerogels were about 140 mAh/g, similar to that of the xerogels prepared by the ion exchange method.
This study aimed to develop a novel bioactive hybrid xerogel consisting of silk fibroin /$SiO_2-CaO-P_2O_5$ by sol-gel process at room temperature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR Spectroscopy, pore measurement, mechanical property testing, in vitro bioactivity test and cytotoxicity assay were performed to characterize the xerogel for bone tissue engineering application. We have found that the xerogel possessed excellent pore structures and mechanical property. Once immersed in a simulated fluid (SBF), the xerogel exhibited profound bioactivity by inducing hydroxyapatite layers on its surfaces. The cell toxicity study also demonstrated that there was little toxic to MC3T3-E1 cells. These results indicate that silk fibroin /$SiO_2-CaO-P_2O_5$ hybrid xerogel potentially could be used as a bone tissue engineering material.
We report on the developed fabrication method of lanthanide-doped xerogel/porous anodic alumina structures for an image formation via the aluminum anodization, the sol-gel synthesis, and the photolithography process. The structures of europium- or terbium-doped xerogel/porous anodic alumina are also considered in view of application in electroluminescent devices.
By heating the magnesiumsilicate (Mg2SiO4:forsterite) xerogel in carbon dioxide, carbonaceous component was intentionally introduced into the amorphous solid precursor. Carbon was introduced homogeneously as unidentate carbonate. Upon being heated at 800 。C in carbon dioxide, the xerogel which had homogeneously distributed carbonaceous component in it crystallized into a single phase product of a new crystalline material, which had approximate composition of Mg8Si4Ol8C. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the new crystalline material did not match with any known crystalline compound registered in the powder diffraction file. Crystallization from amorphous xeroget to the new crystalline phase occurred in a very narrow range of temperature, from 750 。C to 850 。C in carbon dioxide, or in dty oxygen. Upon being heated above 850 。C, carbonaceous component was expelled from the product, accompanied by irreversible transition from the new crystalline material to forsterite.

Vanadium pentoxide xerogels with a doping ratio of $Al/V_2O_5$ ranging from 0.01 to 0.05 were synthesized by doping Al into $V_2O_5$ xerogel via the sol-gel process. By using the synthesized $Al_xV_2O_5$, the $Li/Al_xV_2O_5$ cells were assembled to investigate the chemical and electrochemical properties. Surface morphology of the $Al_xV_2O_5$ xerogel showed an anisotropic corrugated sheet-like matrix, and the interlayer distance was about $11.5{\AA}$. The IR spectra of the $Al_xV_2O_5$ revealed that the doped Al was coordinated to the vanadyl group in $V_2O_5$. The $Al_xV_2O_5$ xerogels showed enhanced reversibility and energy density compared with the $V_2O_5$ xerogel. The specific capacity of the $Al_{0.05}V_2O_5$ xerogel was more than 200 mAh/g at 10 mA/g discharge rate, and cycle efficiency was about 90% after the 31st cycling test between 1.9 V and 3.9 V.
Silver doped vanadium pentoxides with a doping ratio Ag/V ranging from 0.03 to 0.11 were synthesized by sol-gel process, and $Li/Ag_xV_2O_5$ cell was investigated by the electrochemical methods. It appears to be amorphous layered material and entangled fibrous textures has been grown to form anisotropic corrugated fibrils. NMR measurements revealed that several different kinds of $Li^+$ ions exist in the lithium intercalated xerogel electrodes and the average cell potential was about 3.0V vs. $Li/Li^+$. The cell capacity of the silver doped $Ag_xV_2O_5$ xerogel cathodes was more than 359 mAh/g at discharge current 10mA/g and cycle efficiency $94\%$ was achieved.
