Nanocomposites of blends of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and poly (styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA) containing natural and organically modified montmorillonite clays ($Cloisite^{(R)}$25A and $Cloisite^{(R)}$15A) were prepared by solution mixing. Effect of clay on the miscibility, morphology and thermal properties of nanocomposites was investigated. DSC results showed that the addition of clay improved the miscibility of PMMA/SMA blends. Specifically, clay 15A was observed to be most effective than other clays in all nanocomposites regardless of MA contents of SMAs tested. Dispersion of clays was investigated using XRD and TEM and the nanocomposites containing clay 15A again showed the best clay dispersion than the ones with other clays.

In this study, in order to improve the ignitability of high energy aluminum powder, natural oxide films (alumina) were chemically removed, and instead nickel coat was applied. We used an electroless plating for nickel coating and confirmed quantitatively and qualitatively a time-dependent degree of nickel coating through analysis of surface by SEM/EDS. We also conducted element analysis by XRD and thermal properties by TGA/DSC in air oxidizer environment. There results explained the ignition enhancement mechanism of the nickel-coated aluminum powder in air. The difference between coated and un-coated aluminum powder, the effectiveness of coated powder has better ignitability.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has attracted many attention and applications due to its excellent electrochemical ability. Therefore, standardization of rGO through structural and thermal analysis facilitates quality improvement and management, enabling users to increase efficiency and reduce relevant costs. For rGO and graphene-related materials, it is very important to determine the number of layers and define the resulting difference in physical properties. In this study, 3~4 layers of rGO-1 and 9~10 layers of rGO-2 were obtained from graphene oxide (GO) through a hydrazine reduction process. For the prepared rGOs, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern obtained a diffraction peak at 2θ≈25° related to (002) reflection was used to calculate the layer numbers by determining interlayer distance and FWHM value. To reduce the angular uncertainty, XRD data analysis was performed with angle correction using standard reference materials for X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Precise interlayer distance and number of layers were determined using OriginLab and open-source XRD diffraction analysis programs using the angle-corrected diffraction data. TG-DSC thermal analysis was performed to further standardize the physical properties of rGO samples.
ABS/silicate composites with different clay types and compositions were prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization. The chemical structure of ABS was confirmed by the change of C-H stretching peak(near 3000 $cm^{-1}$) in fourier transform-infrared(FT-IR) spectrum. The thermal properties of the ABS/silicate composites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). There was no distinct change in glass transition temperature of the ABS/silicate composites with different clay types. TGA curve indicates a dramatic increase in degradation temperature in case of ABS/20A composite with 3 wt% 20A. The silicate dispersion in the composites was measured by X-ray diffraction(XRD). The silicate dispersion in ABS/20A composites depended on the 20A composition. XRD results showed that the diffraction peak of the ABS/20A composite appeared when the content of 20A was higher than 5 wt%.

Nanocrystalline NiAl alloy containing 36at.%Al was synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA). Synthesized powder was sintered by a pulse electric current sintering (PECS) facility. Effecting parameters on the phase transformation were discussed in terms of cooling rate and time spent on heat treatment. The behavior of phase transformation for sintered parts was examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. Microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Martensitic lattice parameter and volume fraction was calculated by direct comparison method in X-ray diffraction analysis.
Transparent $TiO_2$ thin films prepared by sol-gel process using the modification of titanium(IV) alkoxide showed improved thermal stability and high refraction index. Compared to the pure $TiO_2$ film, the modified $TiO_2$ films show the increased index of refraction under proper condition at pH 2.5. Transparency of these $TiO_2$ thin films were more than 80% in the visible region. It has been demonstrated that the reaction occurs in the amorphous phase: an exchange of phase results in anatase before and after 400$^{\circ}C$, in rutile over 700$^{\circ}$C form the XRD results. The particle sizes, shapes and structures of these nanoclusters in the $TiO_2$ films have been identified through a SEM and XRD. The physical properties and structures of their powders have also been studied through a SEM, XRD, TGA and DSC. The thickness and index of refraction have been determined by the analysis of ellipsometric spectra.

Dye-sensitized Solar Cell (DSC) is a new type of solar cell by using photocatalytic properties of $TiO_2$. The electric potential distribution in DSCs has played a major role in the operation of such cells. $TiO_2$ thin films were deposited on the ITO substrate by Nd:YAG Pulsed Laser Deposition(PLD) at room temperature and post-deposition annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ in flowing $O_2$ atmosphere for 1hour. The structural properties of $TiO_2$ thin films have investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD). We manufactured DSC unit cells then I-V and efficiency were tested by solar simulator.
Phase change materials based on ultra high molecular weight of polyethylene (UHMWPE) blended with paraffin wax (mp $65^{\circ}C$) were studied in this paper. In addition, this paper reviews recent studies on the preparation of shape stabilized phase change materials (SSPCM), such as SSPCM from UHMWPE and paraffin wax (mp $65^{\circ}C$), their basic properties and possible applications to latent heat storage. The preparation method was an absorption method. Also, SSPCM composites were prepared by using a hot press at $200^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The analysis for the shape ability of SSPCM to improve heat efficiency was measured by FTIR, SEM, DSC, XRD, and ARES. UHMWPE composites with 30 wt% paraffin wax (mp $65^{\circ}C$) demonstrated less deterioration of physical property and effective thermal property compared with other conditions. As a result, these SSPCMs could be used for the heat storage and release materials for various products.
PC-type copolymers were synthesized using MPEG(polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate, Mn=2080) to different mole ratios of mono-carboxylic acid(AA : acylic acid). The mole ratios of AA were 2, 3, 4 and PC-type terpolymers were synthesized using mono-, dicarboxylic acid(ITA : itaconic acid MAL : maleic acid) with the same graft chain. To investigate effects of PC-type co-, ter-polymers on the hydration of cement experiments involving FT-IR, XRD, DSC, SEM have been analysed with cement paste specimens to 1, 3, 28 day. The hydration reaction rate of cement paste was slightly delayed at 1 day, due to increase in molar ratio of [AA]/[MPEG], it was recovered in the days after and the copolymer was more active than the terpolymer, because of low carboxylic acid content PC-type copolymers applied 2AA-type were fastest copolymer on hydration reaction of cement paste to 3 day and the more AA mole ratios increased, the more hydration was retarded.
Linear and branched copolymers consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and $Poly({\varepsilon}-caprolactone)$ (PCL) were prepared to compare the characterization of star-shaped copolymers with various molecular architecture. Linear and branched PEG-PCL (1-arm, 2-arm, 4-arm, and 8-arm) copolymers were synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization of ${\varepsilon}-caprolactone$ in the presence of HCl $Et_2O$ as a monomer activator at room temperature. The synthesized copolymers were characterized with $^1H-NMR$, GPC, DSC, and XRD. As a result of the DSC and XRD, each copolymers showed different thermal properties and crystallinity according to the number of ms. The micellar characterization of linear and branched copolymers in an aqueous phase was carried out by using NMR, dynamic light scattering, AM, and fluorescence techniques. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and diameters of micelles depended on the number of arms. Most micelles exhibited a spherical shape in AFM. In this study, we characterized star-shaped PEG-PCL copolymers and investigated their molecular architecture effect on the various properties. Furthermore, we confirmed that the micelles termed with linear and branched PEG-PCL copolymers have possibility as a potential hydrophobic drug delivery vehicle.
