  • The main fault in this interface is that power cable insulating materials are mainly composed of a double layered structure, XLPE/EPDM laminates in cable joint. In this paper, we instituted the interface of normal and degassed XLPE/EPDM and then investigated the breakdown and conduction characteristics as a function of heat treatment time. The results showed that conduction and breakdown strength was influenced by volatile crosslinking by-products which remained inside the insulating material during the production of XLPE and EPDM, especially during heat treatment process. And micro voids and surface roughness also influenced the conduction current and breakdown strength.

  • To improve mean-life and reliability of power cable, we have investigated specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity of XLPE insulator and semiconductive materials in 154kV underground power transmission cable. Specimens were respectively made of sheet form with EVA, EEA and EBA added 30wt%, carbon black, and the other was made of sheet form by cutting XLPE insulator in 154kV power cable. Specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity were· measured by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and Nano Flash Diffusivity. Specific-heat measurement temperature ranges of XLPE insulator were from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 90[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/min]. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were 25[$^{\circ}C$}], 55[$^{\circ}C$] and 90[$^{\circ}C$]. In case of semiconductive materials, the measurement temperature ranges of specific heat were from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 60[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/min]. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were 25[$^{\circ}C$] and 55[$^{\circ}C$]. From these experimental results, both specific heat and thermal conductivity were increased by heating rate because volume of materials was expanded according to rise in temperature.

  • This paper presents a two-port time-domain reflectometry(TDR) measurement technique for extracting the complex propagation constant of a cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) cable. For the extraction, a short pulse transmitted through the cable is measured in the time domain and analyzed in the frequency domain. The propagation constant of a 22.9 kV XLPE cable with a conductor area of 325 $mm^2$ is extracted up to a frequency of approximately 2.14 GHz. The $S_{21}$ measured using a network analyzer and the two-port TDR technique are compared for verification. As a result compared with previous TDR method, the upper possible frequency limit for extracting the propagation constant increases and the measurement error decreases.

  • Research on aged insulation of cables by stress is constantly being considered for reliable and stable power transmission of offshore wind farms. This study aimed to evaluate the insulation characteristic of aged XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulation for application of offshore wind farms. In this study, The XLPE insulation of cable was set as various mechanical strains. The XLPE insulation is exposed to the mechanical stress below yield strain of 5%, 10%, and 20%. Aged samples were tested by using the method of AC BDV (alternative current breakdown voltage), tensile strength, elongation, and SEM (scanning electron microscope) to obtain insulation characteristics. The experimental results show that the dielectric breakdown of the sample with a strain 20% was 50% lower than the unaged sample; thereby, demonstrating that the mechanical strain that occurred in the submarine cables can weaken the insulation characteristics. Therefore, mechanical strain should be monitored when laying and operating submarine cables for offshore wind farms.

  • Internal and external forces may be applied on the power cable in the both process of transportation and installation. Even though the EHV power cables have the structure of metal sheath and plastic jacket etc. to minimize these negative influences, the unusual forces result in the unexpected deformation of the cable. Compressing moulded XLPE model cable sheets were prepared and locally dented with round-edge and square-edge tools. All data were analyzed employing Weibull distribution. The breakdown strength of dented molded specimens showed lower values than the normal ones by 10-60%.

  • It is found to the arc trace on the junction termination of 345kV cable. According to the analysis of the cable material is judged to be good. Manufacturing and design problems are not considered. In construction defects, it was estimated to the low level of insulation oil. In the majority of the arc trace appeared XLPE is found. However, there is no Soots mark, yellow band has not been confirmed, not associated with a radial arc of the spider leg is not evidence. In other opinions, void, contamination or jut are not found on the inside of XLPE. Thus, by the attachment of the impurities in surface of XLPE insulation is judged to the breakdown.

  • In order to improve the reliability of XLPE cables, it is necessary to find the useful diagnostic parameter according to long term aging. This paper described the change of partial discharge(PD) phase Properties of XLPE cable insulation with branch type electrical tree degradation. for long term aging. To understand the PD Properties with $\phi$ -q-n distributed shape of XLPE insulation, specimens were prepared by 22.9㎸ distribution cable and made in a type of block(16${\times}$16${\times}$3[mm]). Ogura needles having tip radius of l0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were inserted into each block pieces. The measuring system was consisted of PD detector, digitizer for digital conversion, VXI system for signal processing. The PD properties of the specimens were measured from initiation of tree to breakdown and their characteristics were analyzed. We analyzed the relationship between electrical properties(PD Quantity, PD initiation angle, PD extinction angle, PD occurrence angle : (PD extinction angle - PD initiation angle)) and the normalized aging rate. We found PD parameter, PD initiation angle and occurrence angle, which are a useful diagnostic parameter in estimating the branch type electrical tree for XLPE insulation condition.

  • Recently, CV, CNCV, CNCV-W cable are used to transmit and distribute electric power. And a lot of researchers put more effort to realize high performance. The dielectric breakdown strength characteristic is a standard to design insulators. Examination of that is a main factor to determine long term insulation performance, which is used to diagnose Insulation deterioration. In this paper, we prepared XLPE, XLPE/nano-filler, LDPE/nano-filler for comparing each of the dielectric breakdown strength characteristics.

  • In this paper, we developed HPF (high pass filter) consists of lumped LC components to decrease the noises that are detected in PD (partial discharge) measuring test, and adapted it to field test. We tested it under laboratory circumstances like the fields, and measured the phase change properties of detected signal in UHF sensor with Lemke Probe and oscilloscope (TDS-3054, Tektronix). As a result, we obtained available data showing the decrease of noises in the experiments with the developed HPF from the joint box of 22.9kV distribution line. The result can be adapted to prevent the degeneration of the XLPE power cable, and to observe and diagnosis the underground power transmission cable at the ultra-high voltage.
