  • Diamond-like Carbon(DLC) films doping Si were deposited by linear ion source(LIS)-physical vapor deposition method on Si wafer. We have studied the effects of Si content on friction and wear properties of DLC films and the characteristics of the films were investigated using Nano-indentation, Micro raman spectroscopy, Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscope (FM-SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The films has been various low-friction and low-stress by varying the flow rates of silane gas. Under the about 2% of Si doping is very suitable for improving the adhesion of films and reducing internal stress while maintaining the surfaces hardness of DLC films.

  • Boron carbide thin coatings were deposited on silicon wafers by DC magnetron sputtering using a $B_4C$ target with As as processing gas. Various amounts of methane gas $(CH_4)$ were added in the deposition process to better understand their influence on tribological properties of the coatings. Reciprocating wear tests employing an oscillating friction wear tester were performed to investigate the tribological behaviors of the coatings in ambient environment. The chemical characteristics of the coatings and worn surfaces were studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). It revealed that $CH_4$ addition to As processing gas strongly affected the tribologcal properties of sputtered boron carbide coating. The coefficient of friction was reduced approximately from 0.4 to 0.1, and wear resistance was improved considerably by increasing the ratio of $CH_4$, gas component from 0 to $1.2\;vol\;\%$. By adding a sufficient amount of $CH_4\;(1.2\%)$ in the deposition process, the boron carbide coating exhibited lowest friction and highest wear resistance.

  • The surface chemistry of D2O dosed Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) surface followed by Ar-ion bombardment and annealing was studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). In the XPS study, Ar-ion bombardment caused decrease of the oxygen on the surface region of Zry-4 and therefore led to change the oxidation states of the zirconium from oxide to metallic form. In addition, oxidation states of zirconium were changed to lower oxidation states of zirconium due to depopulation of oxygen on the surface region by annealing. Up to about 787 K, the bulk oxygen diffused out to the subsurface region and after this temperature, the oxygen on the surface of Zry-4 was depopulated. UPS study showed that the valence band spectrum of the D2O exposed Zry-4 exhibited a dominant peak at around 13 eV and no clear Fermi edge was detected. After stepwise Ar+ sputtering processes, the decrease of the oxygen on the surface of Zry-4 led to suppress the dominant peak around 13 eV, the peak around 9 eV and develop a new peak of the metallic Zr 4d state (20.5-21.0 eV) at the Fermi level.

  • The electronic structure of Mn12-Ac molecular magnet has been investigated using synchrotron radiation. The valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (PES) measurement reveals that Mn 3d states are located near the top of the valence band. The trend in the measured valence-band PES spectra is found to be consistent with that in the calculated local density of states. The Mn 2p x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurement provides evidence for the Mn$^{3+}$-Mn$^{4+}$ mixed-valent states.

  • Absorption spectra of biological specimens in the soft X-ray region have been presented with special reference to the XANES (X-ray absorption Near Edge Structure) of constituent elements. Absorption spectrum in this wavelength region is characterized by the absorption edges from which elemental content could be derived. In addition, XANES has a characteristic profile for chemical environment around the element such as chemical bond. Using the specific absorption peak we can assign not only the chemical bond but also molecules having such a chemical bond. In the present paper, absorption spectrum of DNA was measured in the wavelength range from 1.5nm to 5nm. Spectrum of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells was compared with the DNA spectrum. XANES were distinct at the K absorption edges of major elements, C, N and O. In the spectrum of the cells prominent peaks at the L absorption edge of minor element Ca were also detectable. XANES profiles in small local areas in a cell could also be measured in combination with X-ray microscopy. These give information about local chemical environment in a cell. XANES at the phosphorus K absorption edge in a human HeLa cell was successfully obtained corresponding to a sharp and intensive XANES peak of DNA.

  • Amorphous $Ge_1$_$_xMn_x$ semiconductor thin films grown by low temperature vapor deposition were annealed at various temperatures from 400 to $700^{\circ}C$ for 3 minutes in high vaccum chamber. The electrical and magnetotransport properties of as-grown and annealed samples have been studied. X-ray diffraction patterns analysis revealed that the samples still maintain amorphous state after annealling at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 minutes and they were crystallized when annealing temperature increase to $600^{\circ}C$. Temperature dependence of resistivity measurement implied that as-grown and annealed $Ge_1$_$_xMn_x$ films have semiconductor characteristics, the increase of resistivity with annealling temperature was obseved. The $700^{\circ}C$-annealed sample exhibited negative magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures and the MR ratio was ${\sim}$8.5% at 10 K. The asymmetry was present in all MR curves. The anomalous Hall Effect was also observed at 250 K.

  • Dion-Jacobson phases $CsCa_2Nb_2FeO_9$ and $CsCa_2Nb_2AlO_9$ were reinvestigated by the Rietveld analysis of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). These nominal compounds, previously known as the oxygen-deficient layered perovskites with the sequences of $NbO_6-MO_4-NbO_6$ in tripled slab, in fact, were mixed phases of n = 3 Dion-Jacobson phases and impurities such as $Ca_2NbFeO_6$ and $Ca_3Al_2O_6$. The difference of morphology and chemical in-homogeneity between Dion-Jacobson phases and impurities could be clearly identified by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The chemical composition of $CsCa_2Nb_2FeO_9$ was calculated into $Cs_{0.59}Ca_{2.64}Nb_{2.92}Fe_{0.81}$ in small agglomerate crystals and $Cs_{0.95}Ca_{1.97}Nb_{3.08}Fe_{0.15}$ in long plate-like crystals.

  • CuSn thin films were fabricated by rf magnetron co-sputtering method on the Si(100) substrate for evaluation of the antibacterial effect. The co-sputtering process was performed with different rf powers and sputtering times to regulate the thickness of the films and relative atomic ratio of Cu to Sn. The physicochemical properties of the CuSn thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray induced Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES), Optical microscope (OM), 4-point probe, and antibacterial test. An antibacterial test was conducted with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as changing contact times between CuSn fillms and bacteria suspension. We compared to the crystalline structures of films before sterilization and after sterilization by XRD measurement. The changes of oxidation states of Cu and Sn and the chemical environment of films before and after antibacterial test were investigated with high resolution XPS spectra in the regions of Cu 2p, Cu LMM, and Sn 3d. After antibacterial test, the morphology of the films was checked with an OM images. The electrical properties of the CuSn films such as surface resistance and conductivity were measured by using 4-point probe.

  • Copper-Tin (CuSn) thin films were synthsized by rf magnetron co-sputtering method with pure Cu and Sn metal targets with various rf powers and sputtering times. The obtained CuSn thin films were characterized by a surface profiler (alpha step), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray induced Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES), and contact angle measurement. The deposition rates were calculated by the thickness of CuSn thin films and sputtering times. We observed hexagonal Cu20Sn6 and cubic Cu39Sn11 phases from the films by XRD measurement. From the survey XPS spectra, the Cu and Sn main peaks were observed. Therefore, we could conclude CuSn thin films were successfully fabricated on the substrate in this study. The changes of oxidation states and chemical environment of the films were investigated with high resolution XPS spectra in the regions of Cu 2p, Cu LMM, and Sn 3d. Surface free energy (SFE) and wettability of the CuSn thin films were studied with distilled water (DW) and ethylene glycol (EG) using the contact angle measurement. The total SFE of CuSn thin films decreased as rf power on Cu target increased. The contribution to the total SFE of dispersive SFE was relatively superior to polar SFE.

CuSn thin films were studied with a surface profiler (alpha step), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray induced Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle measurement. The thickness of CuSn thin films was fixed at $200{\pm}10nm$ and deposition rate was calculated by the measured with a surface profiler. From the survey XPS spectra, the characteristic peaks of Cu and Sn were observed. Therefore, CuSn thin films were successfully synthesized on the Si (100) substrate. The oxidation state and chemical environment of Cu and Sn were investigated with the binding energy regions of Cu 2p XPS spectra, Sn 3d XPS spectra, and Cu LMM Auger spectra. Change of the crystallinity of the films was observed with XRD spectra.
