  • Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) have ice binding affinity, depress freezing temperature and inhibit ice recystallization which protect cellular membranes in polar organisms. Recent structural studies of antifreeze proteins have significantly expanded our understanding of the structure-function relationship and ice crystal growth inhibition. Although AFPs (Type I-IV AFP from fish, insect AFP and Plant AFP) have completely different fold and no sequence homology, they share a common feature of their surface area for ice binding property. The conserved ice-binding sites are relatively flat and hydrophobic. For example, Type I AFP has an amphipathic, single ${\alpha}$-helix and has regularly spaced Thr-Ala residues which make direct interaction with oxygen atoms of ice crystals. Unlike Type I AFP, Type II and III AFP are compact globular proteins that contain a flat ice-binding patch on the surface. Type II and Type III AFP show a remarkable structural similarity with the sugar binding lectin protein and C-terminal domain of sialic acid synthase, respectively. Type IV is assumed to form a four-helix bundle which has sequence similarity with apolipoprotein. The results of our modeling suggest an ice-binding induced structural change of Type IV AFP. Insect AFP has ${\beta}$-helical structure with a regular array of Thr-X-Thr motif. Threonine residues of each Thr-X-Thr motif fit well into the ice crystal lattice and provide a good surface-surface complementarity. This review focuses on the structural characteristics and details of the ice-binding mechanism of antifreeze proteins.

  • The crystallizied Inactions of the two metastable phases in the glasses of plagioclase compositions were estimated by x-ray diffraction method. The orthorhombic metastable phase is easily drystaliized in the composition range of 70 to 80 mol% of albite, whereas the hexagonal metastable phase is mostly crystallized in the anonhite-rich side. For the purpose of refining the orthorhombic metastable structure some single crystal fragments of the composition Na,17ca‥‥All Isi2 nn were separated Som the crystallized glasses. The cell parameters of this crystal are a=8.237(1)A. b=8.644(1)A c=4.818(1)A. The space group of this crystal is Pn,2, Final atomic coordinates give R value of 0.040 and Rw of 0.028 with anisotropic thermal parameters. The position of Na and Ca atoms statistically distributed is splitted in two points with the occupancy of 0.5. The Si and Al atoms are statistically distributed in the six-membered ring of the Immm-type framework.

  • To understand the electronic structure of $[NiS_4]^-$ complex ions, two complexes with such $[NiS_4]^-$ core, $FcCH=CHPymCH_3[Ni(dmit)_2]$ (Pym = pyridinium, $dmit^{2-}$ = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolate) and $FcCH=CHPymCH_3[Ni(dddt)_2]{\cdot}{\frac{1}{2}}H_2O$ ($dddt^{2-}=5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolato$), were synthesized to be characterized by X-ray crystallography, single crystal electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Powder EPR spectra show narrow g-anisotropy but the anisotropy is bigger in $[Ni(dmit)_2]^-$ than in $[Ni(dddt)_2]^-$, indicating bigger spin density in Ni(III) d-orbital of $[Ni(dmit)_2]^-$ than in $[Ni(dddt)_2]^-$, which is consistent to DFT results. EPR studies of the crystals of the complexes surprisingly suggest that the $g_y$-axis of $[Ni(dddt)_2]^-$ is approximately on or perpendicular to the $[NiS_4]^-$ plane while the $g_y$-axis of $[Ni(dmit)_2]^-$ is on the plane, though DFT study of the complexes of this study and previously reported $[NiS_4]^-$ complexes indicate that the $g_y$-axis is on the $[NiS_4]^-$ plane.

  • The dihydrido P-C-P pincer complex, $IrH_2{C_6H_3-2,6-(CH_2PBu_2^t)_2}$ (1), was successfully prepared from the reaction of the hydrochloride complex, $IrClH (C_6H_3-2,6-(CH_2PBu_2^t)_2}$, and super acid $(LiBEt_3H)$ under 1 atm of hydrogen in pentane solution at room temperature and followed by Heating at $130^{\circ}C$ in vacuo. Jensen recently found that the dihydrido P-C-P pincer complex 1 is a highly active homogeneous catalyst for the transfer dehydrogenation of alkanes with unusual longterm stability at temperatures as high as $200^{\circ}C$. The treatment of dihydrido complex 1 with nitrogen, water, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide in presence of tert-butylethylene (the) at room temperature in an appropriate solution gave the dinitrogen complex, $[Ir{C-6H_3-2,6-(CH_2PBu_2^t)_2}]_2({\mu}-N_2)$ (2), the hydrido hydroxyl complex, $IrH(OH){C_6H_3-2,6-(CH_2PBu_2^t)_2}$ (3), the carbon dioxide complex, $Ir({\eta}^2-CO_2) {C_6H_3-2,6-(CH_2PBu_2^t)_2}$ (including the bicarbonate complex, $IrH({\kappa}^2-O_2COH){C_6H_3-2,6-(CH_2PBu_2^t)_2}\;(4))$, and the carbonyl complex, $Ir(CO) {C_6H_3-2,6-(CH_2PBu_2^t)_2}\;(5)$ (including the carboxyl complex, $IrH(C(O)OH) {C_6H_3-2,6-(CH_2PBu_2^t)_2}\;(6))$, in good yield, respectively. These P-C-P iridium complexes were isolated and characterized by $^1H,\;^{13}C,\;^{31}P\; NMR$, and IR spectroscopy. In addition, the complexes (1-6) were characterized by a single crystal X-ray crystallography. These complexes account for these small molecules' inhibition of dehydrogenation of alkanes catalyzed by the dihydrido complex 1.

  • The title complex, $[Cd(N_3)_2(2-ethylimidazole)_2]$, I, has been prepared and characterized by X-ray single crystallography. The complex I crystallizes in the monoclinic system, Cc space group with a = 16.200(3), b = 12.926(3), $c=7.007(1){\AA}$, ${\beta}=102.29(3)^{\circ}$, $V=1433.7(5){\AA}^3$, Z = 4, $R_1=0.0239$ and ${\omega}R_2=0.0604$ for 1874 independent reflections. Cd(II) atom has a slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry, with four end-on (${\mu}-1$,1) bridging azido ligands and two 2-ethylimidazole ligands bonding through nitrogen atom. The central cadmium(II) atoms are run in parallel to the c-axis and are doubly bridged with neighboring cadmium(II) atoms by the end-on (${\mu}-1$,1) bridging azido ligands. Thus, this complex has a one-dimensional zigzag chain structure in which the 2-ethylimidazole is in the cis conformation.

  • The title compound, $\{H_2NCH_2CH_2NH_2CH_2CH_2\}\{Cu(H_2O)_6\}(SO_4)_2$, I, has been synthesized under solvo/hydrothermal conditions and their crystal structure analyzed by X-ray single crystallography. Compound I crystallizes in the monoclinic system, $P2_1/n$ space group with a = 6.852(1), b = 10.160(2), $c=11.893(1){\AA}$, ${\beta}=92.928(8)^{\circ}$, $V=826.9(2){\AA}^3$, Z = 2, $D_x=1.815g/cm^3$, $R_1=0.031$ and ${\omega}R_2=0.084$. The crystal structure of the piperazine templated Cu(II)-sulfate demonstrate zero-dimensional compound constituted by doubly protonated piperazine cations, hexahydrated copper cations and sulfate anions. The central Cu atom has a elongated octahedral coordination geometry. The crystal structure is stabilized by three-dimensional networks of the intermolecular $O_{water}-H{\cdots}O_{sulfate}$ and $N_{pip}-H{\cdots}O_{sulfate}$ hydrogen bonds between the water molecules and sulfate anions and protonated piperazine cations. Based on the results of thermal analysis, the thermal decomposition reaction of compound I was analyzed to have three distinctive stages.

  • The structures of dehydrated fully Ca2+ _exchanged zeolite A (a: 12.2a3(2) A and of its iodine sorption complex (a=12.258(2) A) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods in the cubic space group. Pm3m at 21(1)℃.the structures were refined to final R(weighted) indices of 0.081 with 206 reflections and 0.084 with 173 reflections, respectively for which I>3 w (I). In each structure. six divalent cations are located on three different theefold axes associated with 6-ring oxygens. Dehydrated Ca2+_A sorbs ca. 6.0 diiodine molecules per unit cell at 80℃(vapor pressure of I: is ca. 14.3 Torr). Each iodine molecule makes a close approach. along its ahs to framework oxygen atom with I-I distance of 2.71(2) A, I-O distance of 3.32(3) k. and I-I-0=180℃. The result indicates that diiodine molecule forms charge transfer complex with framework oxygen.

  • The L-Valinate anion coordinating zinc complex, [$Zn(val)_2(H-2O)$], was isolated and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystal possess orthorhombic symmetry with a space group $P2_12_12_1$, Z = 4, and a = 7.4279(2)$\AA$, b = 9.4342(2)$\AA$, c =20.5862(7)$\AA$ respectively. The compound features a penta-coordinate zinc ion in which the two valine anion molecules are directly coordinating the central zinc metal ion via their N (amine) and O (carboxylate) atoms, and an additional coordination to zinc is made by water molecule (solvent) to form a distorted square pyramidal structure. In addition, further synthesis of the valine capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystal from the reaction of [$Zn(val)_2(H-2O)$] precursor with $Na_2S$ and 1.95 weight % of $Mn^{2+}$ dopant is described. Obtained valine capped nanocrystal was water dispersible and was optically characterized by UV-vis and solution PL spectroscopy. The solution PL spectrum for the valine capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystal showed an excitation peak at 280 nm and a very narrow emission peak at 558 nm respectively. The measured and calculated PL efficiency of the nanocrystal in water was 15.8%. The obtained powders were characterized by XRD, HR-TEM, and EDXS analyses. The particle size of the nanocrystal was also measured via a TEM image. The measured average particle size was 3.3 nm.

  • A stoichiometric mixture of evaporating materials for AgInS₂ single crystal thin films was prepared from horizontal electric furnace. To obtain the single crystal thin films. AgInS₂ mixed crystal was deposited on thoroughly etched semi-insulating GaAs(100) substrate by the Hot Wall Epitaxy(HWE)system. The source and substrate temperatures were 680℃ and 410℃, respectively. The crystalline structure of the single crystal thin films was investigated by the photoluminescence and double crystal X-ray diffraction(DCXD). The carrier density and mobility of AgInS₂ single crystal thin film mea-sured from Hall effect by van der Pauw method are 9.35×10/sup 16/㎤ and 294㎠/V·s at 293K respectively. The temperature dependence of the energy band gap of the AgInS₂ obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's relation , E/sub g/(T)=2.1365eV-(9.89×10/sup-3/eV/K/)T²(T+2930K). The crystal field and the spin-orbit splitting energies for the valence band of the AgInS₂ have been estimated to be 0.1541eV and 0.0129 eV, respectively, by means of the photocur-rent spectra and the Hopfield quasicubic model. These results indicate that the splitting of the Δso definitely exists in the Γ/sub 5/ states of the valence band of the AgInS₂ /GaAs epilayer. The three photo-current peaks ovserved at 10K are ascribed to the A₁-, B-₁and C₁-exction peaks for n=1.
