Enormous amount of waste oyster-shell (OS) has a major disposal problem in coastal regions. OSs have attracted much attention for recycling, because these are mainly composed of calcium carbonate with rare impurities. In this study, we demonstrate the calcareous deposit films on steel plate by using OSs on the basic of cathodic protection technique. The composition of the OSs was analyzed by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Carbon dioxide gas was pumped into distilled water to make carbonic acid solution for dissolution of OS. The calcareous deposit was characterized by second electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffraction. Corrosion rates were estimated by measurements of anodic polarization and immersion test. It is confirmed that calcareous deposits on steel plate are formed under all condition of cathodic protection by using waste OS from the SEM and EDX results. Calcareous deposits on steel by OS provide good corrosion resistance by acting as a barrier to oxygen supply to the steel surface.

Magnesium oxide has become focus for research activities due to its use in magnetic tunnel junctions and for understanding of do ferromagnetism. Theoretical investigations on such type of system indicate that the presence of defects greater than a threshold value is responsible for the magnetic behaviour. It has also been shown experimentally that by decreasing the film thickness and size of nanoparticles, enhancement/increase in magnetization can be achieved. Apart from the change in dimension, swift heavy ions (SHI) are well known for creating defects and modifying the properties of the materials. In the present work, we have studied the irradiation induced effects in magnesium oxide thin film deposited on quartz substrate via X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Magnesium oxide thin films of thickness 50nm were deposited on quartz substrate by using e-beam evaporation method. These films were irradiated by 200 MeV Ag15+ ion beam at fluence of $1{\times}10^{11}$, $5{\times}10^{11}$, $1{\times}10^{12}$, $3{\times}10^{12}$ and $5{\times}10^{12}ions/cm^2$ at Nuclear Science Centre, IUAC, New Delhi (India). The grain size was observed (as studied by AFM) to be decreased from 37 nm (pristine film) to 23 nm ($1{\times}10^{12}ions/cm^2$) and thereafter it increases upto a fluence of $5{\times}10^{12}ions/cm^2$. The electronic structure of the system has been investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements performed at the high energy spherical grating monochromator 20A1 XAS (HSGM) beamline in the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC), Taiwan. Oxides of light elements like MgO/ZnO possess many unique physical properties with potentials for novel application in various fields. These irradiated thin films are also studied with different polarization (left and right circularly polarized) of incident x-ray beam at 05B3 EPU- Soft x-ray scattering beamline of NSRRC. The detailed analysis of observed results in the wake of existing theories is discussed.

(100-x)Zn xMg alloy films are prepared onto cold-rolled steel substrates; where x ranged from 0 to about 38 atomic %. The alloy films show microcrystalline and grain structures respectively, according to preparation conditions such as composition ratio of zinc and magnesium or gas pressures etc.. And X-ray diffraction analysis indicates not only the presence of Zn-Mg thin films with forced solid solution but also the one of $MgZn_2$ alloy films partly. In addition the influence of Mg/Zn composition ratio and morphology of the Zn-Mg alloy films on corrosion behavior is evaluated by electro-chemical anodic polarization tests in deaerated 3% NaCl solution. From this experimental results, all the prepared Zn-Mg alloy films showed obviously good corrosion resistance to compare with 99.99% Zn and 99.99% Mg Ingots for evaporation metal. It is thought that the Zn-Mg films with effective forced solid solution prepared by plasma enhanced PVD method, produces smaller and denser grain structure so that may improve the formation of homogeneous passive layer in corrosion environment.

Bismuth titanate ($Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$, BIT) thin film has been studied intensively in the past decade due to its large remanent polarization, low crystallization temperature, and high Curie temperature. Substitution of various trivalent rare-earth cations (such as $La^{3+}$, $Nd^{3+}$, $Sm^{3+}$ and $Pr^{3+}$) in the BIT structure is known to improve its ferroelectric properties, such as remanent polarization and fatigue characteristics. Among them, neodymuim-substituted bismuth titanate, ((Bi, Nd)$_4Ti_3O_{12}$, BNT) has been receiving much attention due to its larger ferroelectricity. In this study, Ferroelectric $Bi_{3.3}Nd_{0.7}Ti_3O_{12}$ thin films were successfully fabricated by liquid delivery MOCVD process onto Pt(111)/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si(l00) substrates. Fabricated polycrystailine BNT thin films were found to be random orientations, which were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope analyses. The remanent polarization of these films increased with increase in annealing temperature. And the film also demonstrated fatigue-free behavior up to $10^{11}$ read/write switching cycles. These results indicate that the randomly oriented BNT thin film is a promising candidate among ferroelectric materials useful for lead-free nonvolatile ferroelectric random access memory applications.
$BiFeO_3/Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$(BFO/PZT) multilayer thin films have been prepared on a Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si(100) substrate by chemical solution deposition. BFO single layer, BFO/PZT bilayer and multilayer thin films were studied for comparison. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystal structure of all films was multi-orientated perovskite phase without amorphous and impurity phase. The leakage current density at 500 kV/cm was reduced by approximately four and five orders of magnitude by bilayer and multilayer structure films, compared with BFO single layer film. The low leakage current density leads to saturated P-E hysteresis loops of bilayer and multilayer films. In BFO/PZT multlayer film, saturated remanent polarization of $44.3{\mu}C/cm^2$ was obtained at room temperature at 1 kHz with the coercive field($2E_c$) of 681.4 kV/cm.

The corrosion of reinforcement is the main reason for the performance degradation of concrete structures. The pre-rusted parts of rebar in concrete structures are vulnerable to the corrosion, especially if the structure is exposed to wet or chlorinated environments. In this study, effects of different curing solution on corrosion behavior of the pre-rusted rebars in the cement composites were investigated. HCl(3%) and CaCl2(10%) solution were utilized to accelerate the pre-rust of the rebar, and each pre-rust condition rebar including reference (RE) were placed in mortar cylinder. Three kinds of samples then were cured in CaCl2 (3%) solution and tap water respectively for 120 days. Electrochemical polarization and half-cell potential measurement were used to monitor the influence of curing water on the corrosion behavior of pre-rusted steel bar in cement composite. The surface morphology and composition of corroded steel bar were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction. The results show that the corrosion rates of pre-rusted samples in both curing water are higher than that of non-pre-rusted samples. The corrosion rates of RE, CaCl2 and HCl pre-rusted samples in salt water were 8.14, 4.48, 13.81 times higher than those in tap water respectively, on the 120th day.

In this study, hydrophobically modified fumed silica was added to the PVDF coating to improve corrosion protection performance. Two types of silane modifiers, trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDZ), were used for hydrophobic modification of the fumed silica. The composition of modified fumed silica was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The dispersion of modified fumed silica in the PVDF coating was observed by the transmission electron microscopy, and the hydrophobicity of PVDF coating was analyzed by the water contact angle. Surface properties were examined by the field emission scanning electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. Potentiodynamic polarization was conducted to confirm corrosion protection performance of PVDF coating in terms of hydrophobically-modified fumed silica contents. As a result, the average surface roughness and the water contact angle of the PVDF coating increased with modifier contents. The results of the potentiodynamic polarization test showed an increase of the Ecorr values with increase of the hydrophobicity of PVDF coating. Thus, it clearly indicates that the corrosion protection performance of PVDF coating improved with the addition of the hydrophobic-modified fumed silica that prevents the penetration of moisture into the PVDF coating.

We have fabricated $Bi_{3.25}La_{0.75}Ti_3O_12$ (BLT) thin films on the Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrates using a metalorganic decomposition (MOD) method with annealing temperature from $550^{\circ}C$ to $750^{\circ}C$. The structural properties of BLT films examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD). From XRD analysis. BLT thin films show polycrystalline structure. The layered-perovskite phase was obtained by spin-on films at above $600^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed uniform surface composed of rodlike grains. The grain size of BLT films increased with increasing annealing temperature. The BLT film annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ was measured to have a dielectric constant of 279, dielectric loss of 1.85(%), remanent polarization of $25.66\mu C/\textrm{cm}^2$, and coercive field of 84.75 kV/cm. The BLT thin films showed little polarization fatigue test up to $3.5{\times}10^9$ bipolar cycling at 5 V and 100 kHz.

We studied the dielectric and dynamic mechanical losses according to the quenching condition in low density polyethylene being used to power cables. According to severe quenching condition, characteristics of the temperature in internal friction los peak have decreased the magnitude of loss peak as amorphous region lengthen. From now on, the frequency dependent characteristics of dielectric loss have investigated at room temperature, and the dielectric loss peak due to interface polarization, between crystal and amorphous region, occurs about 30[Hz], and that, the peak due to orientation polarization in correspondence to the loss peak in internal friction has observed at about 3 [MHz]. As quenching velocity increased, the effect on quenching condition about the dielectric loss has decreased the magnitude of the loss peak. Thus, estimation has been carried out on the activation energies nd the degree of crystallinity by means of X-ray diffraction are obtained as follows: room quenching : 26.4 [kal/mole] and 54.73 [%], ice quenching : 25.6 [kcal/mole] and 48.47 [%], liquid nitrogen quenching specimens : 22.56 [kcal/mole] and 40.95 [%].

The effect of excess Bi contents on the ferroelectric properties of B $i_{3.25}$ L $a_{0.75}$$Ti_3$$O_{12}$ (BLT) thin films has been investigated. Bismuth lanthanum titanate thin films with excess Bi contents were prepared onto Pt/Ti/ $SiO_2$/Si substrate by metalorganic decomposition (MOD) technique. The structure and morphology of the films were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. From the XRD analysis, BLT thin films show polycrystalline structure and the layered-perovskite phase was obtained over 10% excess of Bi contents. As a result of ferroelectric characteristics related to the Bi content of the BLT thin film, the remanent polarization and dielectric constant decreased with increasing over Bi content of 10% excess. The BLT film with Bi content of 10% excess was measured to have a dielectric constant of 326 and dielectric loss of 0.024. The BLT thin films showed little polarization fatigue test up to 3.5$\times$10$^{9}$ bipolar switching cycling.
