  • X-ray systems for medical treatment use noninvasive procedures. Being capable of locally inspecting the inside of the body, X-ray systems are routinely used for basic diagnosis. X-ray systems to be used for medical purposes were originally made with a gas filled tube inside an induction coil in the initial stages of development but with this approach it becomes difficult to take a satisfactory picture through thick body sections, non invasively. However continued development made it possible to take non-invasive pictures of breasts, blood vessels and other body parts through thick body sections. Recently, high-voltage X-ray generators of more compact size, increased generation efficiency, and sophisticated output control have become possible. All of these features are made possible by the use of a high-frequency output from an inverter and a fast switching semiconductor device. In this paper, we describe a new X-ray generator operating with a resonant inverter in order to reduce switching loss and high frequency noise. In addition, in order to identify the differences amongst types of rectification, we have compared output and the quality of X-ray pictures obtained with full-wave rectification and dual-voltage rectification methods.

Application of An Adaptive Self Organizing Feature Map to X-Ray Image Segmentation

  • In this paper, a neural network based approach using a self-organizing feature map is proposed for the segmentation of X ray images. A number of algorithms based on such approaches as histogram analysis, region growing, edge detection and pixel classification have been proposed for segmentation of general images. However, few approaches have been applied to X ray image segmentation because of blur of the X ray image and vagueness of its edge, which are inherent properties of X ray images. To this end, we develop a new model based on the neural network to detect objects in a given X ray image. The new model utilizes Mumford-Shah functional incorporating with a modified adaptive SOFM. Although Mumford-Shah model is an active contour model not based on the gradient of the image for finding edges in image, it has some limitation to accurately represent object images. To avoid this criticism, we utilize an adaptive self organizing feature map developed earlier by the authors.[1] It's learning rule is derived from Mumford-Shah energy function and the boundary of blurred and vague X ray image. The evolution of the neural network is shown to well segment and represent. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed method, segmentation of an industrial part is solved and the experimental results are discussed in detail.

X선 회절을 이용한 자동차 압연강의 잔류응력 측정에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Measurement of Residual Stress in Rolled Steel for Automobile using X-ray Diffraction)

  • In textured material, diffraction angle $2{\theta}$ usually shows a nonlinear relation against $sin^2{\psi}$ due to elastic anisotropy of crystals. SPHD and SPCD steel is cold-rolled carbon steel for automobile. The characteristics X-ray for stress measurement is Cr $K_{\alpha}\;and\;Mo\;K_{\alpha}$ characteristic X-ray. The $2{\theta}-sin^2{\psi}$ diagram under elastic strain seems to have a linear behavior using regression line of data but has a nonlinear behavior in distribution of data by Cr $K_{\alpha}$ characteristic X-ray. As the plastic strain of specimen increases, the nonlinearity of $2{\theta}$ with respect to $sin^2{\psi}$ increases remarkably. On the other hand, the diffraction angle $2{\theta}$ by Mo $K_{\alpha}$ characteristic X-ray shows a good linearity on $2{\theta}-sin^2{\psi}$ diagram under plastic strain as well as elastic strain. Therefore, this paper presents the measurement of residual stress in cold-rolled carbon steel for automobile using penetration depth of Mo $K_{\alpha1}$ characteristic X-ray and multiplicity factor of crystal diffraction plane.

A Volume Reconstruction Algorithm and a Coordinate Calibration of an X-ray Three Dimensional Imaging System

  • Inspection and shape measurement of three-dimensional objects are widely needed in industries for quality monitoring and control. In this paper, we propose a three dimensional volume reconstruction method, which is an iterative method and as uniform and simulated algebraic reconstruction technique (USART). In this method, two or more x-ray images projected from different views are needed, and also the geometry of the imaging system need to be a priori identified well. That is to say, the relative locations between the x-ray source, imaging plane and the object should be determined exactly by calibration. To achieve this, we propose a series of coordinate calibration methods of the x-ray imaging system using grid pattern images.   • We have developed a practical method for estimating high-energy x-ray spectra using measured attenuation curves. This method is based on the iterative perturbation technique proposed by Waggener et al. The principle is to minimize the difference between the measured and calculated transmission curves. The experimental study was made using 4 MV, 10 MV, and 15 MV x-ray beams. It has been found that the spectrum varies strongly with the off-axis distance.

  • Three dimensional shape measurement techniques are widely needed in industries for product quality monitoring and control. X-ray imaging method is a promising technology to achieve three-dimensional Information, both the surface and inner structure of an object, since it can overcome the limitations of conventional visual or optical methods such as an occlusion problem or surface reflection properties. In this paper, we propose three dimensional volume reconstruction method based on x-ray stereo imaging technology.   • 골다공증은 45세 이상의 여성 50% 이상이 갖고 있는 질환이다. 더욱이 질병의 증상을 환자가 느끼지 못하여 병을 심화시키기 때문에 조기 진단으로 골다공증을 예방하는 것이 중요하다. 이를 위해 골밀도(Bone Mineral Density)의 효과적인 측정을 위한 다양한 연구가 국내외적으로 수행되고 있다. 골밀도 측정을 위해서는 X-선 영상이 활용되고 있으며, 이 중에서 이중 에너지 X 선 흡수법(DEXA)을 이용하여 골밀도를 측정하는 방법은 많은 관심을 받고 있는 분야이다. DEXA 영상은 서로 다른 두 에너지준위의 X선으로부터 영상을 획득함으로써 생체조직의 중첩에 의한 잡음을 효과적으로 줄여 진단효과를 높이는데 유용하다. 하지만, DEXA 영상에서 골영역을 추출하기 위해서는 실험적으로 계수를 결정해야 하는 문제점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 두 에너지 흡수 영상에서 골영역을 추출하기 위해 실험적으로 결정하는 변수를 X-선 영상의 물리적 의미와 각 에너지에 반응하는 생체조직들의 감쇠상수 특성을 기반으로 분석하여 골영역을 효과적으로 검출하는 방법을 제안한다. 더불어 다양한 영상을 적용한 실험으로 제안한 알고리즘의 효율성을 확인하였다.

진단용엑스선촬영장치의 간접 선량 계산법 개발 (Development of Indirect Dosimetry by Calculation Method in the Diagnostic X-ray Equipment)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the indirect dosimetry by calculation (IDC) method for diagnostic X-ray equipment. The experiments were performed with inverter type X-ray tubes: Toshiba (E7252X, Japan) and Varian (RAD-14, USA). For the development method, we first applied the standard quality of X-ray beam shown in the TRS457 document, and second, to produce the constants of trendline for the IDC, the total filtration on X-ray beam was subdivided. Third, in order to increase the precision, the energy region was divided into the high energy region and the low energy region and developed by the IDC. In order to verify the IDC, mean dose (mR) values were measured for three Toshiba X-ray tubes and three Varian X-ray tubes at clinical medical institutions and then compared with the IDC on the 2013. As a result, compared with the previous study, the accuracy of the IDC of this study were improved by 2.71% and 9.91% in Toshiba and Varian X-ray tubes, respectively.

  • Microscopic method was compared with X-ray diflraction analysis for the identification of rockforming minerals using 11 main rock samples in Korea. 1. There was no difference between X-ray diffraction analysis and microscopic one in major minerals, but some accessary minerals. 2. The rock-forming minerals of main rocks presented in this study occured almost in crystalline state so that they could be easily identified by X-ray analysis alone.

A method of X-ray source spectrum estimation from transmission measurements based on compressed sensing

  • A new method of X-ray source spectrum estimation based on compressed sensing is proposed in this paper. The algorithm K-SVD is applied for sparse representation. Nonnegative constraints are added by modifying the L1 reconstruction algorithm proposed by Rosset and Zhu. The estimation method is demonstrated on simulated spectra typical of mammography and CT. X-ray spectra are simulated with the Monte Carlo code Geant4. The proposed method is successfully applied to highly ill conditioned and under determined estimation problems with a good performance of suppressing noises. Results with acceptable accuracies (MSE < 5%) can be obtained with 10% Gaussian white noises added to the simulated experimental data. The biggest difference between the proposed method and the existing methods is that multiple prior knowledge of X-ray spectra can be included in one dictionary, which is meaningful for obtaining the true X-ray spectrum from the measurements.
