In this paper, we propose an integrated control system that measures neutrons, gamma ray, and x-ray. The proposed system is able to monitor and control the data measured and analyzed on the remote or network, and can monitor and control the status of each part of the system remotely without remote control. The proposed system consists of a gamma ray/x-ray sensor part, a neutron sensor part, a main control embedded system part, a dedicated display device and GUI part, and a remote UI part. The gamma ray/x-ray sensor part measures gamma ray and x-ray of low level by using NaI(Tl) scintillation detector. The neutron sensor part measures neutrons using Proportional Counter Detector(low-level neutron) and Ion Chamber Type Detector(high-level neutron). The main control embedded system part detects radiation, samples it in seconds, and converts it into radiation dose for accumulated pulse and current values. The dedicated display device and the GUI part output the radiation measurement result and the converted radiation amount and radiation amount measurement value and provide the user with the control condition setting and the calibration function for the detection part. The remote UI unit collects and stores the measured values and transmits them to the remote monitoring system. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, the measurement uncertainty of the neutron detector was measured to less than ${\pm}8.2%$ and the gamma ray and x-ray detector had the uncertainty of less than 7.5%. It was confirmed that the normal operation was not less than ${\pm}15$ percent of the international standard.

Digital X-ray image detector is widely used for radiodiagnosis. Amorphous selenium has been received attention as one of the major material that confirmed photoconductor of direct methode detector. We analysis the photocurrent using 2-dimensional device simulator when blue-ray (${\lambda}=486nm$) is irradiated and high voltage is biased. We evaluate electron-hole generation rate, electron-hole recombination rate, and electron/hole distribution in the amorphous selenium. This simulation methode is helpful to the analysis of digital X-ray image detector. We expect that many applications will be developed in digital X-ray image detector using 2-dimensional device simulator.

Since the 9·11 terror attack in 2001, the Maritime Logistics Security System has been strengthened and required X-ray image for every imported cargos from manufacturing countries to United States. For scanning cargos, the container inspection systems use high energy X-rays for examination of contents of a container to check the nuclear, explosive, dangerous and illegal materials. Nowadays, the X-ray cargo scanners are established and used by global technologies for inspection of suspected cargos in the customs agency but these technologies have not been localized and developed sufficiently. In this paper, we propose the X-ray array detector system which is a core component of the container scanning system. For implementation of X-ray array detector, the analog and digital signal processing units are fabricated with integrated hardware, FPGA logics and GUI software for real-time X-ray images. The implemented system is superior in terms of resolution and power consumption compared to the existing products currently used in ports.

In recent years, there has been keen interest in developing flat panel detectors for all modalities of radiology, including gerneral radiology, fluoroscopy, electronic portal imaging, and mammography. In this paper, we report the new hybrid x-ray detector consisted of ZnS(Ag) photoemission layer and a-Se photoconductor layer to resolve problem of conventional x-ray detector such as the direct detector and the indirect detector. To design the structure of ZnS(Ag)/a-Se detector, the penetrated energy spectrum and absorption fraction was estimated using MCNP 4C code. Also, we carried out the experiment to demonstrate the result of MCNP 4C code. Experimental results showed that the absorption fraction of $500{\mu}m$-ZnS(Ag) film was above 87%, 75% at 60 and 80 kVp. As a results, we can determined the thickness of suitable phosphor and the thickness of photoconductor.
The purpose of this study is an evaluation of the performance of a detector under radiographic irradiation condition by fabricating the polycrystalline $HgI_2$ film detector. The polycrystalline $HgI_2$ film detectors with thickness of 210 and $320\;{\mu}m$ were fabricated by screen print technology. Measurements of X-ray sensitivity and dark current were performed for two detectors. And measurements of the linearity of X-ray response and reproducibility were performed for the detector of thickness $320\;{\mu}m$. For applied electric field strengths from 0.05 to $2\;V/{\mu}m$ to the detector of thickness $320\;{\mu}m$, the X-ray sensitivities were measured from 233 to $1,408{\times}106\;electrons/mR{\cdot}mm^2$. And the dark currents were measured from 3.2 to $118\;pA/mm^2$. Compared with values reported by Zhong Su et al., the X-ray sensitivities exhibit about two times larger than the X-ray sensitivities measured by Zhong Su et al. And the dark currents exhibit about nine times larger than the dark currents measured by Zhong Su et al. The linearity of X-ray response acquired 0.988 as a coefficient of correlation (r). Reproducibility acquired 0.002 as a coefficient of variation. This study provides the performance data of fabricated polycrystalline $HgI_2$ film detector available for an active matrix flat panel imager under radiographic irradiation condition.

The X ray has been widely used in both diagnosis and treatment. Recently, a miniature X ray tube has been developed for radiotherapy. The miniature X ray tube is directly inserted into the body irradiated, so that X rays can be guided to a target at various incident angles according to collimator geometry and, thus, minimize patient dose. If such features of the miniature X ray tube can be applied to development of X ray imaging as well as radiation treatment, it is expected to open a new chapter in the field of diagnostic X ray. However, the miniature X ray tube requires an added filter and a collimator for diagnostic purpose because it was designed for radiotherapy. Therefore, a collimator and an added filter were manufactured for the miniature X ray tube, and mounted on. In this study, we evaluated beam characteristics of the miniature X ray tube for diagnostic X ray system and accuracy of measuring the HVL. We used the Si PIN Photodiode type Piranha detector (Piranha, RTI, Sweden) and estimated the HVL of the miniature X ray tube with added filter and without added filter. Through an another measurement using Al filter, we evaluated the accuracy of the HVL obtained from a direct measurement using the automatic HVL calculation function provided by the Piranha detector. As a result, the HVL of the miniature X ray tube was increased around 1.9 times with the added filter mounted on. So we demonstrated that the HVL was suitable for diagnostic X ray system. In the case that the added filter was not mounted on, the HVL obtained from use of the automatic HVL calculation function provided by Piranha detector was 50% higher than the HVL estimated using Al filter. Therefore, the HVL automatic measurement from the Piranha detector cannot be used for the HVL calculation. However, when the added filter was mounted on, the HVL automatic measurement value using the Piranha detector was approximately 15% lower than the estimated value using Al filter. It implies that the HVL automatic measurement can be used to estimate the HVL of the miniature X ray tube with the added filter mounted on without a more complicated measurement method using Al filter. It is expected that the automatic HVL measurement provided by the Piranha detector enables to make kV-X ray characterization easier.
We introduce a rotating-gantry-based x-ray micro-tomography system to be used for small animal imaging studies. It has the zoom-in imaging capability for high resolution imaging of a local region inside the animal subject without any contrast anomalies arising from truncation of the projection data. With the sliding mechanism mounted on the rotating gantry holding the x-ray source and the x-ray detector, we can control the magnification ratio of the x-ray projection data. By combining the projection data from the large field of view (FOV) scan of the whole animal subject and the projection data from the small FOV scan of the region of interest, we can obtain artifact-free zoomed-in images of the region of interest. For the acquisition of x-ray projection data, we use a $1248{\times}1248$ flat-panel x-ray detector with the pixel pitch of 100 mm. It has been experimentally found that the developed system has the spatial resolution of up to 121p/mm when the highest magnification ratio of 5:1 is applied to the zoom-in imaging. We present some in vivo rat femur images to demonstrate utility of the developed system for small animal imaging.

A single-shot dual-energy x-ray imaging technique has been developed using a sandwich detector by stacking two detectors, in which the front and rear detectors respectively produce relatively lower and higher x-ray energy images. Each detector layer is composed of a phosphor screen coupled with a photodiode array. The front detector layer employs a thinner phosphor screen, whereas the rear detector layer employs a thicker phosphor screen considering the quantum efficiency for x-ray photons with higher energies. We have applied the proposed method into the inspection of printed circuit boards, and obtained dual-energy images with background clutter suppressed. In addition, the single-shot dual-energy method provides sharper-edge images than the conventional radiography because of the unsharp masking effect resulting from the use of different thickness phosphors between the two detector layers. It is promising to use the single-shot dual-energy x-ray imaging for high-resolution nondestructive testing. For the reliable use of the developed method, however, more quantitative analysis is further required in comparisons with the conventional method for various types of printed circuit boards.
In this study, we designed and fabricated an ultra-compact CT that automatically calibrates the detector's center axis and verified its performance. The three-dimensional reconstruction performance was evaluated using 3D CAD data and X-ray data acquired by manually calibrating the center axis of the CT detector. The results showed that tilting the center axis by more than 0.25° causes circle break phenomenon, which rapidly degrades the quality of the 3D reconstructed image. By applying the automatic calibration device of a detector center axis, the 3D reconstruction performance was enhanced by calibrating the detector center axis to match the specimen rotation axis.

A new approach on the correction for Compton escape component in X-ray unfolding algorithm was investigated to obtain more accurate X-ray source spectrum. The X-ray detector used in this study was a planar type HPGe detector(EG&G ORTEC, GLP-32340/13-P-LP) whose energy response has been blown and ISO narrow beam series were employed as source spectrum. At lower energy Part of measured X-ray spectrum including the correction for Compton escape component more accurate unfolded spectrum was obtained by letting down the starting energy level of the collection in existing spectrum correction procedure to consider multiple scattering effects. It is, from this study, concluded that accurate correction for Compton escape component is needed in X-ray unfolding procedure since Compton scattering becomes more important as incident X-ray energies increase.
