  • Fullerene/polystyrene ($C_{60}$/PS) nano particle was prepared by using emulsion polymerization. Styrene and fullerene were emulsified in aqueous media in the presence of poly(N-vinyl pyridine) as an emulsion stabilizer, and polymerization was initiated by water soluble radical initiator, potassium persulfate. The obtained nano particles have an average diameter in the range of 400-500 nm. The fullerene contents in the nano particle can be controlled up to 15 wt % by varying the feed ratio, which was confirmed by themogravimetric analysis (TGA) and elemental analysis (EA). The structure and morphologies of the $C_{60}$/PS nano particles were examined by various analytical techniques such as dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), electron diffraction (ED) pattern, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and UV spectroscopy. Unlike conventional $C_{60}$/PS particles initiated by organic free radical initiators, in which the fullerene is copolymerized forming a covalent bond with styrene monomer, the prepared $C_{60}$/PS nano particles contain pristine fullerene as secondary particles homogeneously distributed in the polystyrene matrix.

  • In a three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3, a stress control for band gap manipulation was predicted but no systematic investigation has been performed yet due to the requirement of large external stress. We report herein on the strain-dependent results for Bi2Se3 films of various thicknesses that are grown via a self-organized ordering process. Using small angle X-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy, the changes of d-spacings in the crystal structure and phonon vibration shifts resulted from stress are clearly observed when the film thickness is below ten quintuple layers. From the UV photoemission/inverse photoemission spectroscopy (UPS/IPES) results and ab initio calculations, significant changes of the Fermi level and band gap were observed. The deformed band structure also exhibits a Van Hove singularity at specific energies in the UV absorption experiment and ab initio calculations. Our results, including the synthesis of a strained ultrathin topological insulator, suggest a new direction for electronic and spintronic applications for the future.

  • This work has demonstrated that a novel amphiphilic poly(epichlorohydrine)-graft-polystyrene (PECH-g-PS) copolymer at 34:66 wt% was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene using PECH as a macroinitiator. The structure of the graft copolymer was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance ($^1H$ NMR) and FTIR spectroscopy, demonstrating that the "grafting from" method using ATRP was successful. The self-assembled graft copolymer was used as a template film for the in-situ growth of silver nanoparticles from $AgCF_3SO_3$ precursor under UV irradiation. The in situ formation of silver nanoparticles with 6-8 nm in average size in the solid state template film was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible spectroscopy and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) also displayed the selective incorporation and the in situ formation of silver nanoparticles within the hydrophilic PECH domains, probably due to stronger interaction of the silvers with the ether oxygens of PECH backbone than that with hydrophobic PS side chains.

  • Thin films of Pb(Mg, Zn)1/3Nb2/3O3 were fabricated by spin coating the Pb-Mg-Zn-Nb-O complex alkoxide sols on(111) Pt-coated MgO (100) planes. It was observed that the content of H2O and the rheological characteristics of sol greatly influenced the orientation of perovskite grains after thin-film formation. A strong preferential orientation of (100)-type planes of the perovskite grains was obtained for the sol aged for 15 days with the molar ratio of H2O to total metal alkoxides=2. As small angle X-ray scattering experiment in the Porod region was performed to correlate the observed preferential orientation with the network structure of precursors at various stage of aging. It was shown that the degree of branching of the Pb-Mg-Zn-Nb-O precursor chain had a direct effect on the preferred oreintation, and weakly branched precursor systems led to highly oriented grains after thin-film formation.

  • Co-Re alloy development is prompted by the search for new materials for future gas turbines which can be used at temperatures considerably higher than the present day single crystal Ni-based superalloys. The Co-Re based alloys are designed to have very high melting range. Although Co-alloys are used in gas turbine applications today, the Co-Re system was never exploited for structural applications and basic knowledge on the system is lacking. The alloy development strategy therefore is based on studying alloying additions on simple model alloy compositions of ternary and quaternary base. Various strengthening possibilities have been explored and precipitation hardening through fine dispersion of MC type carbides was found to be a promising route. In the early stages of the development we are mainly dealing with polycrystalline alloys and therefore the grain boundary embrittlement needed to be addressed and boron addition was considered for improving the ductility. In this paper recent results on the effect of boron on the strength and ductility and the stability of the fine structure of the strengthening TaC precipitates are presented. In the beginning the alloy development strategy is briefly discussed.

  • Structural and optoelectronic properties of as-synthesized SnO$_2$ nanowires were examined in this study. The SnO$_2$ nanowires were first synthesized by thermal evaporation of ball-milled SnO$_2$ powders in argon atmosphere without the presence of any catalysts, arid their structural properties are then investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. This investigation revealed that the synthesized SnO$_2$ nanowires are single-crystalline and that their growth direction is parallel to the [100] direction. In addition, photoresponse of a single SnO$_2$ nanowire was performed with light with above-gap energy, and different characteristics of photoresponses were obtained for the nanowire at ambient atmosphere and in vacuum. The photoresponse mechanism is briefly discussed in this paper.

  • After anchoring 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyltriethoxysilane (APTES) onto the surfaces of the channels within ordered mesoporous silica, SBA-15, we dispersed $Cu^{2+}$-perfluorophthalocyanine into the modified SBA-15 channels. From small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) patterns and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, we confirmed that both the calcined and $Cu^{2+}$-perfluorophthalocyanine-incorporated SBA-15 samples possessed ordered periodic structures and hexagonal symmetry lattices (p6mm). The value of the $d_{100}$ spacing was decreased after the incorporation of $Cu^{2+}$-perfluorophthalocyanine into the modified SBA-15 channels. We used FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to characterize both the modified SBA-15 and the $Cu^{2+}$-perfluorophthalocyanine-incorporated SBA-15 samples. From scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and $N_2$ sorption measurements, we found that the $Cu^{2+}$-perfluorophthalocyanine units were incorporated within the modified SBA-15 channels, rather than on the external surfaces of the modified SBA-15 channels.

  • Sn-filled $Co_8Sb_{24}$ skutterudites were synthesized by the encapsulated induction melting process. Single ${\delta}-phase$ was successfully obtained by subsequent annealing and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Temperature dependences of Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity were examined from 300 K to 700 K. The positive Seebeck coefficient confirmed the p-type conductivity of the Sn-filled $Co_8Sb_{24}$. Electrical resistivity increased with increasing temperature, which shows that the Sn-filled $Co_8Sb_{24}$ skutterudite is a highly degenerate semiconductor. Thermal conductivity was reduced by Sn-filling because the filler atoms acted as phonon scattering centers in the skutterudite lattice. Thermoelectric figure of merit was enhanced by Sn filling and its optimum filling content was considered to be $z{\leq}0.5$ in the $Sn_zCo_8Sb_{24}$ system.

  • The surface segragation of NiZr, CuZr alloy has been studied wi th X-ray Imotoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy(AES) and low energy ion scattering(LEIS). The composition of outmost atomic layer has been determinded by the use of LEIS at several incident energies using Ar+ ion. In the LEIS analysis, the effect of charge exchange has been estimated by a novel measurment of the charge exchange parameters while simul taneous determining the relative concentrations of Ni and Zr and the complementary information obtained will be described. The composition of the clean annealed surface, measured with AES only, will be contrasted wi th the surface concentration of the preferentially sputtered surface. The experimental results has been clearly demonstrated that when the NiZr ruld CuZr alloys are exposed to continuous Ar+ ion bombardment the outermost atomic layer is Zr rich due to preferential sputtering of Ni atoms. where Ni is preferentially sputtered, but the difference in sputtering yields is not sufficient to explain the observed composition. Therefore, it is necessary to consider other processes such as Radiation Induced Segregation(RIS). The surface composition of the heated sample surface predicts that Zr should surface segregate which futher supports the view that part of the Zr enrichment is due to RIS.to RIS.

  • The characteristics of $Al_2O_3/Ag/Al_2O_3$ multilayer passivaton prepared by twin target sputtering (TTS) system for organic light emitting diodes. The $Al_2O_3/Ag/Al_2O_3$ multilayer thin film passivation on a PET substrate had a high transmittance of 86.44 % and low water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of $0.011\;g/m^2$-day due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag interlayer and effective multilayer structure for preventing the intrusion of water vapor. Using synchrotron x-ray scattering and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) examinations, we investigated the growth behavior of Ag layer on the $Al_2O_3$ layer to explain the SPR effect of the Ag layer. This indicates that an $Al_2O_3/Ag/Al_2O_3$ multilayer passivation is a promising thin film passivation scheme for organic based flexible optoelectronics.
