In this study, a novel microwave absorber which consists of a structural part, a resistive sheet, and a low dielectric layer is proposed. Unlike the conventional Salisbury screen, a newly proposed absorber is capable of a range of absorbing performance, from narrowband to broadband. In the case of the narrowband absorber, the fabricated absorber with optimized design parameters has a strong resonance at 9.25 GHz and reflection loss of -44 dB with satisfying the -10 dB absorption in whole X-band (8.2 GHz~12.4 GHz). For the broadband absorber design, the reflectivity was minimized in the considered frequency ranges. The designed absorber showed two weak resonances near 6.5 GHz and 16.5 GHz and satisfied the -10 dB absorption from C-band to Ku-band (4 GHz~18 GHz). The measured reflection loss of fabricated absorber was well matched with simulation results, though the measurement was only performed on X-band. For the Salisbury screen to be capable of broadband absorption, it should be stacked multiply in a structure known as the Jaumann absorber. However, for the microwave absorber presented here, broadband as well as narrowband capabilities can be implemented without a change of the structure.

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were used as dielectric lossy materials and NiFe particles were used as magnetic lossy materials. Total twelve specimens for the three types such as dielectric, magnetic and mixed radar absorbing materials (RAMs) were fabricated. Their complex permittivities and permeabilities in the range of $2{\sim}18$ GHz were measured using the transmission line technique. The parametric studios for reflection loss characteristics of each specimen to design the single-layered RAMs were performed. The mixed RAMs generally showed the improved absorbing characteristics with thinner matching thickness. One of the mixed RAMs, MD3with the thickness of 2.00 mm had the 10 dB absorbing bandwidth of 4.0 GHz in the X-band ($8.2{\sim}12.4$ GHz). It also showed very broad 10 dB absorbing bandwidth as wide as 6.0 GHz in the Ku-band ($12.0{\sim}18.0$ GHz) with the thickness tuning to 1.49 mm. The experimental results for selected several specimens were in very good agreements with simulation ones in terms of the overall reflection loss characteristics and 10 dB absorbing bandwidth.
The soybean is one of the oldest cultivated crops in the world. Microwave remote sensing is an important tool because it can penetrate into cloud independent of weather and it can acquire day or night time data. Especially a ground-based polarimetric scatterometer has advantages of monitoring crop conditions continuously with full polarization and different frequencies. In this study, soybean growth parameters and soil moisture were estimated using polarimetric discrimination ratio (PDR) by radar scatterometer. A ground-based polarimetric scatterometer operating at multiple frequencies was used to continuously monitor the soybean growth condition and soil moisture change. It was set up to obtain data automatically every 10 minutes. The temporal trend of the PDR for all bands agreed with the soybean growth data such as fresh weight, Leaf Area Index, Vegetation Water Content, plant height; i.e., increased until about DOY 271 and decreased afterward. Soil moisture lowly related with PDR in all bands during whole growth stage. In contrast, PDR is relative correlated with soil moisture during below LAI 2. We also analyzed the relationship between the PDR of each band and growth data. It was found that L-band PDR is the most correlated with fresh weight (r=0.96), LAI (r=0.91), vegetation water content (r=0.94) and soil moisture (r=0.86). In addition, the relationship between C-, X-band PDR and growth data were moderately correlated ($r{\geq}0.83$) with the exception of the soil moisture. Based on the analysis of the relation between the PDR at L, C, X-band and soybean growth parameters, we predicted the growth parameters and soil moisture using L-band PDR. Overall good agreement has been observed between retrieved growth data and observed growth data. Results from this study show that PDR appear effective to estimate soybean growth parameters and soil moisture.

A study on the calibration of an X-band HPS(Hongik Polarimetric Scatterometer) system for ground-based operation is presented in this paper. In order to calibrate the scatterometer system, the degree of its distortions are analyzed by comparison between theoretical- and measured-values using the theoretically well-known calibration targets such as a metal sphere, a trihedral corner reflector(CR) and a metal cylinder. The calibration works in the field conditions depend on the precise and stable measurements of those calibration target. we present a measurement technique, so-called, an automatic 2-D target-scanning technique, using the incidence-angle(${\xi}-$ and ${\phi}-$ directions) control of HPS system. Then, we used STCT(Single-Target Calibration Technique) and GCT(General Calibration Technique) to calibrate a distortion of the scatterometer system, and measured the polarimetric RCS(Radar Cross Section) and phase-difference of a trihedral-CR as a test-target to verify the accuracy of the calibration technique. Then, three different types(i.e., 10, 20, 30 cm) of trihedral-CR were used. we obtained the error ranges about ${\pm}1.0$dB, ${\pm}0.5$ dB in a polarimetric RCS and about $-20^{\circ}{\sim}0^{\circ}$ and ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ in the co-polarized phase-difference by using the GCT and STCT, respectively.
Sea surface wind is one of the most fundamental variables for understanding diverse marine phenomena. Although scatterometers have produced global wind field data since the early 1990's, the data has been used limitedly in oceanic applications due to it slow spatial resolution, especially at coastal regions. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is capable to produce high resolution wind field data. KOMPSAT-5 is the first Korean satellite equipped with X-band SAR instrument and is able to retrieve the sea surface wind. This study presents the validation results of sea surface wind derived from the KOMPSAT-5 backscattering coefficient data for the first time. We collected 18 KOMPSAT-5 ES mode data to produce a matchup database collocated with buoy stations. In order to calculate the accurate wind speed, we preprocessed the SAR data, including land masking, speckle noise reduction, and ship detection, and converted the in-situ wind to 10-m neutral wind as reference wind data using Liu-Katsaros-Businger (LKB) model. The sea surface winds based on XMOD2 show root-mean-square errors of about $2.41-2.74m\;s^{-1}$ depending on backscattering coefficient conversion equations. In-depth analyses on the wind speed errors derived from KOMPSAT-5 backscattering coefficient data reveal the existence of diverse potential error factors such as image quality related to range ambiguity, discrete and discontinuous distribution of incidence angle, change in marine atmospheric environment, impacts on atmospheric gravity waves, ocean wave spectrum, and internal wave.

Since the electromagnetic properties of fiber reinforced polymeric laminate composite can be tailored effectively by adjusting its composition and regulating the stacking sequence, it is plausible material for fabricating the radar absorbing structures (RAS) of desired performance. In order to design the effective electromagnetic wave (EM) absorber with the fiber reinforced polymeric laminate composite, its electromagnetic characteristics should be available and could be regulated easily in the target frequency bands. In this study, dielectric characteristics of the E-glass/epoxy laminate composites were measured by the free space method in the X-band frequency range ($8.2\;{\sim}\;12.4\;GHz$). In order to describe the dielectric behavior of laminate composites of arbitrary stacking sequences, the equivalent circuit model and the laminating equations for estimating dielectric properties were proposed, and experimentally verified. From the comparison of the predicted and measured data, the proposed method predicted well the experimentally measured data.

In this paper, we designed the transparent circuit analog radar absorbing structure using printed metal grid mesh for enhanced optical transmittance. To obtain wideband electromagnetic absorption and enhanced optical transparency at X-band, we proposed the resistive FSS(Frequency Selective Surface) using printed metal mesh pattern on transparent glass with PEC(Perfect Electric Conductor) plane using ITO(Indium Thin Oxide) coating. We then fabricated the proposed structure to verify the simulation results obtained from commercial EM simulator. The comparisons between the simulation and measured results show good agreements. The results also show that the proposed radar absorbing structure can provide wideband reflection as well as better optical transparency. We can apply this proposed structure to the canopy of stealth aircraft and other stealth and security applications for visible transparency.

In this paper, we designed a reconfigurable mixer for microwave broadband receiver. The proposed mixer using a anti-parallel diode is operated as a fundamental mixer or sub-harmonic mixer with respect to a control voltage. A fundamental mixer with a control voltage show a conversion loss of -10 dB, 1 dB compression point of 2.0 dBm at X-band/ Ku-band. On the other hand, it is performed as a sub-harmonic mixer with a conversion loss of -17 dB, 1 dB compression point of 2.0 dBm at Ka-band.

This paper presents TerraSAR-X and KOMPSAT-5 sigma nought variation according to season and antenna observation configuration in Mongolia. Two types of landcover including bare surface and cropland were examined. The seasonal variation of sigma nought in cropland was about 7 dB and particularly a significant sigma nought reduction occurred after harvest. On the contrary, the Mongolia bare surface provides a consistent sigma nought values for several years with an annual variation less than 2.5 dB of standard deviation. However, the bare soil was relatively sensitive to look-direction (or ascending or descending mode) as well as incidence angle while the cropland was almost independent of antenna look-direction and small incidence angle changes. Although the look-directional variation of bare surface sigma nought was observed in this study, the look-direction anisotropic nature of the surface was not well examined. A further study would be required to account for this feature with various SAR observation configurations.

Results of an analysis of the continuous motion effect for FMCW-SAR system and a signal processing to correct it are presented in this paper. SAR images reconstructed by back-projection algorithm are included as well. To analyze how platform velocity and sampling frequency affect the continuous motion effect, FMCW signal model was used, and the signal processing in time-doppler(t, $k_u$) domain was adopted. Then, back-projection algorithm and modified matched-filter was used to reconstruct SAR images, and it was validated using measured data by airborne FMCW-SAR system in X-band frequency.
