Recognition of Virtual Written Characters Based on Convolutional Neural Network

  • This paper proposes a technique for recognizing online handwritten cursive data obtained by tracing a motion trajectory while a user is in the 3D space based on a convolution neural network (CNN) algorithm. There is a difficulty in recognizing the virtual character input by the user in the 3D space because it includes both the character stroke and the movement stroke. In this paper, we divide syllable into consonant and vowel units by using labeling technique in addition to the result of localizing letter stroke and movement stroke in the previous study. The coordinate information of the separated consonants and vowels are converted into image data, and Korean handwriting recognition was performed using a convolutional neural network. After learning the neural network using 1,680 syllables written by five hand writers, the accuracy is calculated by using the new hand writers who did not participate in the writing of training data. The accuracy of phoneme-based recognition is 98.9% based on convolutional neural network. The proposed method has the advantage of drastically reducing learning data compared to syllable-based learning.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore sorts and roles of Afro-American music genres such as jazz, blues, gospel, and swing which were shown in post-structural Afro-American literary works: Toni Morrison's novel Jazz, Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple, and August Wilson's play The Piano Lesson. It has been phenomenal for several important Afro-American writers to create their works in which they invite traditional Afro-American music genres. This has made significant effects to depict a wide range of episodes in their works, which are historically and culturally associated with such music genres. This paper analyzes varied ways in which the writers combine these two artistic fields, which are all Afro-American, and express their authenticity and identity as being blackness.

  • This study aims to investigate John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman. This important postmodern novel is arguably the most important fiction published in England during the 1960's. John Fowles, along with Muriel Spark, Irish Mudoch and Doris Lessing is one the most influential postmodern writers. This is a study on the narrative technique, multiful endings, parody and author intrusion. The French Lieutenant's Woman is metafiction - a novel about writing a novel. The author says "This story I am telling is all imagination" in chapter 13. That is to say that John Fowles subverts traditional and even modernist poetics. His own intentional attempt to depart from traditional narrative structure is itself one of the novel's central issues. Through The French Lieutenant's Woman John Fowles shows postmodernist writers' narrative strategy.

The Other's Body: Vietnamese Contemporary Travel Writing by Women

  • In recent years, Vietnamese literature has seen the rise of women writers in a genre traditionally dominated by men-travel writing. Phuong Mai, Huyen Chip, Dinh Hang, among others, are just a few who have introduced innovations to this genre. This paper investigates the practice of contemporary Vietnamese women travel-writers and how they differ in perception compared to their male counterparts. One of the most crucial differences is that women perform cultural embodiment, employing their bodies instead of their minds. An encounter of the woman writer with other cultures is, therefore, an encounter between the body and the very physical conditions of culture, which leads to a will to change, to transform, more than a desire to conquer, to penetrate the other. Utilizing the concept deterritorialization developed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, this paper argues that despite being deemed fragile and without protection, women's bodies are in fact fluid and able to open new possibilities of land and culture often stripped away by masculinist ideology.

Between Orientalism and Ornamentalism: Colonial Perceptions of Southeast Asian Rulers: 1850-1914

  • Finding distinguishing characteristics of Southeast Asia has proven to be a significant challenge: by focusing on the encounters which primarily colonial British writers had with the region's state rulers, it becomes possible to recover the early conceptualizations of regional governance. The writings of Henry Yule, Anna Leonowens, Sir George Scott, and Hugh Clifford all document the "orientalist" features of Western discourses because these writers at once were affected by it as they contributed to it. The discourse about royalty and rulers was central to many of the tropes associated with orientalism, but also with 'ornamentalism'. David Cannadine has shown that ornamentalism (in which British conceptualized many imperial practices in relation to their own hierarchical conceptions of society) was as critical a feature of imperial outlook as was orientalism. The need to understand ruling elites was at the heart of the imperialist project. Tracing the ways in which colonizing powers represented the region's ruling elite offers a new avenue for recognizing the affinities of the regional experience. Beyond orientalism, the paper explores questions about the representation and presentation of authority. Understanding the conceptualizations of rulers is connected to the comprehension of social organization-including representations of "traditional society."

Postmodern Vietnamese Literature

  • This study explores postmodernism in Vietnamese literature. While there has been much dispute among critics regarding postmodernism in Vietnamese literature, postmodernism is now thought to be something that cannot be denied. Vietnamese postmodernism has Vietnamese characteristics and is strongly influenced by American literature. The structure of some Vietnamese short stories is similar to that of some American writers. In the writings of Jean-François Lyotard, Jean Baudrillard and Ihab Hassan, for example, we find out many characteristics which are ascribed to postmodern Vietnamese literature. We propose the use of the term 'Lao Tzu discourse'which is to include the main concepts of postmodernism such as chaos, nothingness and fragmentation. We propose that postmodern Vietnamese Literature appeared in the 1940s with the collection, Fall Spring Poems (1942), and is also seen with the prose of Nguyen Khai and Nguyen Minh Chau in the 1980s, and the drama written by Luu Quang Vu in the 1980s. There now exists a large group of postmodern Vietnamese writers, like Le Dat, Thanh Thao, Bao Ninh, Cao Duy Son, Nguyen Ngoc Tu and Nguyen Binh Phuong, among others.

  • The study chose two people, KimSamuidang(1769~1823) and GangJeongildang(1772~1832), as concrete examples representing the common female writers in the late of the Joseon Dynasty. And study the recognition on reality and consciousness of orientation in the poetic literature. KimSamuidang is commit to the revival of his family to pass the test. And exchange with husband through active study literature and practice wife law. She left the largest number of works as a female writer during the Joseon Dynasty. GangJeongildang is a Confucian scholar and poet of the late Joseon Dynasty. She also spent her whole life sewing and suffering from disease, trying to create a dying family. Teaching her husband's education, she established self-recognition, encouraged and supported learning. They had a equality sense of marriage couple as academic friends, encouraging each other to study, and by passing the test, they tried to raise their families. Also, although poor in rural life, the mind was the Independent women who pursued comfortable life.

A Study on the Works and Artist Spirit of the Picture Book Writer Hong Seongchan (그림책작가 홍성찬의 작품 활동과 작가정신 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to look into the meaning of Hong Seongchan who has become the first generation picture book writers in the history of Korean picture books by considering the works of the picture book author 'Hong Seongchan', the characteristics of pictures and the artist's spirit. The career that he took up from 1955 as an illustrator to 2012 when the final picture book was published is in line with the developmental process of Korean picture books. He consistently devoted himself to publishing illustrations from the days when his job as an illustrator was not noticed to the days when he finished his life as a picture book writer through his full-length period. As a result, he built a unique world of works, such as the reproduction of Korean images and emotions through complete historical research. His strong illustration spirit and craftsmanship during his lifetime became the basis of the birth of a professional group called a full-time picture book writer, and Hong Seongchan became the first generation picture book writers in the history of Korean picture books.

A Study on Korean EFL Collegians' Approach to L2 Writing Based on Metacognition and Affectivity (상위인지와 정서에 기반한 외국어 학습방법에 대한 연구)

  • The present study attempted to identify the metacognitive strategies used by L2 writers at the university level as well as their particular aspects which might influence the use of these strategies. Twenty-seven participants, all of whom were enrolled in an English course, were asked to write an expository essay and then complete a questionnaire which includes their beliefs and attitudes toward L2 writing experience and the metacognitive strategies during the writing process. It was found that even though inexpert writers knew and employed as many strategies as the expert counterparts did, they were unsuccessful in the quality of their texts. Simply possessing a repertoire of metacognitive strategies was not enough for successful L2 writing. The failure of the inexpert writers to apply these metacognitive strategies in an effective manner was influenced by affective factors such as anxiety, self-confidence, self-concept, etc. As a result of this study, a pedagogical implication is suggested.
