The importance of interlanguage in teaching English as a foreign language (영어교육에서 중간언어의 중요성)

  • In order to obtain a better understanding of L2 learners, transitional knowledges, it is very important and necessary to have a better knowledge of interlanguage. According to Corder, the role of interlanguage in English education holds significance to (1) for language teachers, (2) for language learners themselves, and (3) for language textbook compilers. To me the significance of interlanguage in English education can be described in terms of not only language teachers, learners themselves, textbook writers and compilers but pure linguists, applied linguists, school authorities as well as parents. For language learners themselves a clear understanding of interlanguage results in students being receptive to language input, and the avoidance of mental block, and low levels of foreign language anxiety. Native speakers of English (NSE) reflect not only linguistic features but also psychological, socio-linguistic, and discourse features when engaged in communication activities. This means that L2 learners are introduced to these different features, especially pragmatic features which are different from their mother tongue or L1 when engaged in communication with NSE. Hence the importance of interlanguage pragmatics should be recognized. It is very important that teachers of English should have a better understanding of interlanguage and present L2 learners with their interlanguage features so they can avoid any misunderstandings such features may cause when conversing with NSS. It should also be noted that interlanguage can form the foundation of language acquisition theory and linguistic analysis.

한국인 학자와 영어 원어민 학자의 논문 영문 초록 비교 분석

  • Most if not all research articles published in journals require the author to write an abstract regardless of academic field. However, abstract writing in English is a highly specialized genre on its own. In this light, the purpose of this study is to investigate differences in journal article abstracts written in English by Korean and native English scholars. 90 research paper abstracts written in English by Korean national scholars, US-educated Korean scholars and native English scholars were compared according to rhetorical organization. A generalized rhetorical scheme was used in analysis which was based on Graetz (1985) and Swales (1990): Background-Purpose-Method-Result-Conclusion. In addition, the use of conjunctions as a cohesive device was analyzed based on the categories proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Analyses of the research paper abstracts showed that the majority of the abstracts included the purpose, method and result components. However, while approximately 70 percent of native English writers used research background in the abstract, only 26 percent of Korean national scholars did so. Regarding the use of conjunctions, Korean-national scholars overused and inappropriately used additive and temporal conjunctions. The US-educated Korean scholars showed similar patterns to the native English speakers. The findings obtained here imply that there is a need to provide academic writing instruction of abstracts to non-native scholars.

Quantifying L2ers' phraseological competence and text quality in L2 English writing (L2 영어 학습자들의 연어 사용 능숙도와 텍스트 질 사이의 수치화)

  • On the basis of studies that show multi-word combinations, that is the field of phraseology, this study aims to examine relationship between the quality of text and phraseological competence in L2 English writing, following Yves Bestegen et al. (2014). Using two different association scores, t-score and Mutual Information(MI), which are opposite ways of measuring phraseological competence, in terms of scoring frequency and infrequency, bigrams from L2 writers' text scored based on a reference corpus, GloWbE (Corpus of Global Web based English). On a cross-sectional approach, we propose that the quality of the essays and the mean MI score of the bigram extracted from YELC, Yonsei English Learner Corpus, correlated to each other. The negative scores of bigrams are also correlated with the quality of the essays in the way that these bigrams are absent from the reference corpus, that is mostly ungrammatical. It indicates that increase in the proportion of the negative scored bigrams debases the quality of essays. The conclusion shows the quality of the essays scored by MI and t-score on cross-sectional approach, and application to teaching method and assessment for second language writing proficiency.

A Study on Character analysis and make up design in TV action drama 'ya-cha(夜叉)'

  • This study action drama TV drama 'Ya-ha'(夜叉) the actual work practices of the pre-consultation stage through the Writers, Producer, Art directors and in consultation with the opinion of the character set the record of the contents and character changes over time in accordance with characters makeup the design elements were analyzed. The methods of study was used local and abroad related books, studies, publications and cases and the subjects were limited to be four male make up characters in drama 'Ya-cha'. As a result, TV action drama 'Ya-cha' make up design elements and representation techniques were classified as description of skin tone, wound, the shape of eyebrows, hair type, shape of beard and materials and carried out an important role in the character representation. First, presentation techniques changed skin tones depending on character and position and described wound shape as expression technique and materials were analyzed. Second, the shape of eyebrows was based on the physiognomy of the form. And hair type changed volume, thickness, length and texture depending on character. Third, shape of beard is expressed different kinds of volume, thickness, length and texture depending on character. There fore, that systematization of the make-up design elements is useful to express stable characters and make drama for make up in various image genres.

  • Since 1996, the document exchange method by EDI has been introduced in port and logistics industries to enhance the declaration activities to the Pusan Port Authority and Customs. In spite of these efforts, users such as shipping companies, shipping agents, and freight forwarders have complained the inconvenience of using EDI systems. The major reasons can be summarized as too much transfer time, inconvenient EDI software, and problems on message receiving confirmation. To solve these problems, although we have developed an Internet based EDI system for Port-MIS users, we have failed its implementation practically for the short of Governments readiness, the complexity of systems and separation with in-house systems. So, the writers have changed the direction of research to applying the concept of SCM to logistics system by XML/EDI. In this Paper, the prototype systems to integrate processes of shipping company, Port Authority, Customs and stevedoring company will be suggested. The new method of EDI gives us advantages, which are the accuracy of cargo data and integration of processes among firms and keeping the service of cargo trace.

Scenario-Based Design of The Next Generation Information Appliances (시나리오 기반 차세대 정보가전 신제품 개발)

  • Home networking technology connects individual home appliances through a wired or wireless network and makes possible new functions that were impossible when they were used independently. However, the new functions must not simply be confusing arrays of functions that are possible to implement, but those absolutely necessary to the users. To develop innovative information appliances with such functions, scenarios were used and played guiding roles in suggesting new product ideas, making design mockups, and producing videos to show natural situations where the products would be used in home of the future. In the phase of suggesting new product ideas, user action scenarios in the home, generated by a team consisting of experts in the fields of cognitive engineering, user interface, computer science, cultural anthropology, interaction design, and product design, helped the team identify user needs and design factors necessary to fulfill those needs and suggest new product ideas from the design factors. In the phase of making design mockups, the procedures of using the products were described in the scenario format. Based on the scenarios the s쇼les and the user interfaces of them were designed. In the phase of producing videos, the interactions between the user and the product were embodied in the course of professional writers'arranging the scenarios of using the products for the scripts of the videos. Videos were produced to show the actual situations where the design mockups would be used in home of the future and the dynamic aspects of interaction design.

  • This study extracted quality control factors for invigorating Institutional Repository operations, and re-extracted key quality control factors with significant influence among them. Furthermore, this study developed an operating model reflecting an improvement scheme of these key quality control factors, and estimated how much effective the operating model was to the user. As a result of inspecting satisfaction for IR operating model and the general system, it has been found that librarians' satisfaction for them is higher than that of the general user. Korea's universities prefer a proxy submission mode by librarians to a self-archiving submission mode by writers. Therefore, based on the operation model developed by this study, it is suggested that Institutional Repository operation can be actively invigorated with librarians of these universities as central players.

  • This paper deals with enhancement of the high school equalization assignment system to be executed by the allied entrance examination after the applicants graduated from their middle schools. In prevailing opinion, because educational demander's will has not been considered under the current system, it whose merits have been covered is required to be improved. If the application system of the entrance examination for the high schools will be returned, a situation that it will result in irregularity of the middle school education and in overheating entrance examination seems to appear explicitly. Since the averages of the allied entrance examination score of all the high schools, achieved by the equalization-application nearest assignment system which is named by writers of this paper, are equal, our system is good for maintaining the merits of the current system. More than 50% educational demander's will has been reflected by our system, so that we come to the conclusion that our system is excellent in all the systems verified up to now. Assigning students to the high school to make an average difference between three and five score, we expect that relection rate of the educational demander's will be increased more than 60%.

Automatic Generation of Multiple-Choice Questions Based on Statistical Language Model (통계 언어모델 기반 객관식 빈칸 채우기 문제 생성)

  • A fill-in-the-blank with choices are widely used in classrooms in order to check whether students' understand what is being taught. Although there have been proposed many algorithms for generating this type of questions, most of them focus on preparing sentences with blanks rather than generating multiple choices. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for generating multiple choices, given a sentence with a blank. Because the algorithm is based on a statistical language model, we can generate relatively unbiased result and adjust the level of difficulty with ease. The experimental results show that our approach automatically produces similar multiple-choices to those of the exam writers.
