  • Some planorbid snails such as Hippeutis cantori and Segmentina hemisphaerula have reported as the molluscan intermediate hosts of Neodiplostomum seoulense, one of important snail-borne human intestinal trematodes in Korea. However, one of the Korean lymnaeid snail species, Austropeplea ollular was also found to be the first intermediate ho of N. seoulense. In field-collected Austropeplea snails from Sorae and Kimpo out of se collected localities, the bifurcated cercariae of N. seoulense were shed (infection rat 0.3%), whereas no Radix auricularia and Fossaria truncatula were found shedding cercariae. Each of 12 tadpoles of Rana nigromaculata, known as the second intermedia host of N. seoulense, were exposed to 200 cercariae shed from field-collected A ollula. F tadpoles of R. nigromaculata were found to be massively infected with metacercariae o N. seoulense (recovery rate: 62.1%). Each of five rats (Sprague-Dowley strain) was or fed with 200 metacercariae, and eggs of N. seoulense were detected in the rat feces on week later. These rats were killed 4 weeks after postinfection and adult worms of N seoulense were recovered from the small intestines (recovery rate: 9%). This is the f report of A. ollula as the first molluscan intermediate host for N. seoulense in Korea.

  • Based on the gross lesion, a survey of ulcer prevalence was carried out on pigs (3,161 heads) at a slaughterhouse in seoul from April to December in 1989. The pigs stomachs were observed anatomically and classified, according to the presence or absence of foreign bodies. Ulcer prevalence is usually classified according to size of pig farm, ages, and supplied month. The results in the studies were as follows, 1. Fundus followed the highest rate with 28.2%, esophagus with 24.5% each of cardiac and pyloric part with 7.8% and 4.1% in cases of gastric mucosa pathological studies examed total 3,161. In the acute ulcer prevalence, fundus follwed with 5.4%, esophagus with 2.6%, each of cardiac and pyloric part with 0.8% and 0.3%. When prevalent frequencies of fundus are compared with cardiac and pyloric part, they have meaning.(P <0.05). 2. In the survey pig of total 3,161, pathological changes of epithelium tissue foliowed 44.0%, erosion(11.5%), chronic ulcer(14.8%), acute ulcer(1.6%), scar formation (1.7%) and perforation (0.9%). 3. In general monthly prevalence rates of gastric lesion are higher in spring and fall than in summer. 4. In the size of pig farms, ulcer showed higher rate at professional farms than raising on the side. 5. When there are more fluid condition in stomach and they are old, the ulcer appeared for more. 6. Foreign bodies in stomach were sand, hairballs, and intestinal worms were detected (1%).

  • Cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels encoded by the tax-4 and tax-2 genes are required for chemosensing and thermosensing in the nematode C. elegans. We identified a gene in the C. elegans genome, which we designated cng-1, that is highly homologous to tax-4. Partial CNG-1 protein tagged with green fluorescent protein was expressed in several sensory neurons of the amphid. We created a deletion mutant of cng-1, cng-1 (jh111), to investigate its in vivo function. The mutant worms had no detectable abnormalities in terms of their basic behavior or morphology. Whereas tax-4 and tax-2 mutants failed to respond to water-soluble or volatile chemical attractants, the cng-1 null mutant exhibited normal chemotaxis to such chemicals and a tax-4;cng-1 double mutant had a similar phenotype to tax-4 single mutants. Interestingly, cng-1 and tax-4 had a synergistic effect on brood size.

  • IT environment is rapidly changed, thus security threats such as worms and viruses have increased. Especially company's internal network requires to be inherently protected against these threats. In this respect, NAC(Network Access Control) has attracted attention as new network security techniques. The NAC implements the endpoint access decision based on the collected endpoint security status information and platform measurement information. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of unauthorized NAC which protect against such as a worm, virus, malware-infected PC, and mobile device to connect to company's internal networks.

  • This study was performed to investigate the activity of antibodies in the tissues of Paragonimus westermani at the different developmental stages. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Immunelectron microscopy (IEM) were applied, using the dog sera infected with metacercariae isolated from Cambaroides similis. These dog sera were obtained from 3rd to 96th week after infection by bleeding. The supernatants of homogenated worms for worm antigen were used. The worm tissues were embedded in Lowicryl HM 20 medium, treated with infected serum and protein A gold complex (particle size; 12 nm) and observed by electron microscope. In the pattern of antibody levels by ELISA test in all developemental worm antigens, the activity of antibody was very weak in the 3rd week, but strong in the worm antibody from 4th to 20th week after infection. Its activity was maintained even till 96th week. The antibody level of the L2th week worm antigen was higher than those of the 20th and 48th week worm antigens. Generally, many gold particles were observed on the secretory granules and the epithelial lamellae. Thus, it was concluded that the antigenic materials in the developmental worm tissues were especially concentrated on the secretory granules in the parenchymal tissues and the epithelial lamellae in the lumen of the caecum.

  • Clam worms (Marphysa sanguinea) are a rich source of bioactive components such as the antibacterial peptide, perinerin. In the present study, we explored the physiological activities of a novel NCWPFQGVPLGFQAPP peptide (NCW peptide), which was purified from clam worm extract through high-performance liquid chromatography. Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) revealed that NCW was a new peptide with a molecular weight of 1757.86 kDa. Moreover, NCW peptide exhibited significant antioxidant effects, causing a 50% inhibition of DPPH radical at a concentration of 20 μM without showing any cytotoxicity. These were associated with a reduction in the activity of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in LPS-stimulated RAW264. 7 cells. Furthermore, NCW peptide exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages via inhibition of the abnormal production of pro-inflammatory cytokines including nitric oxide (NO), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). These anti-inflammatory effects of NCW peptide were associated with the inhibition of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Our results therefore suggest that this novel NCW peptide with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects could be a good therapeutic agent against inflammation-related diseases.

  • Horsehair or gordian worms (Nematomorpha) were identified with 22 genera (Gordiida) and 5 marine species (Nectonema) until now. During juvenile phase in development, they gain parasitic activity in arthropods. In this study, a gordian worm was detected in the feces of a dog living in Nonsan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. Using this worm, we evaluated the morphological characteristics by light microscopic analysis. Furthermore, the morphological classification was re-evaluated by scanning and transverse electron microscopes. The worm was determined that it is male adult having a bi-lobed tail and male gonads in cross sections. Based on the morphological characteristics including cross sections of body and areole on the cuticle, the parasite was also identified as Gordius sp. (Nematomorpha: Gordiidae).

  • Neoplasioporus zocconis (Yamaguti, 1934) (Trematoda: Opecoelidae) was found from the intestine of the pale chub, Zacco platypus, for the first time in Korea. The worms were characterized morphologically by oval body shape, bipartited seminal vesicle, sinistrally located genital pore, and lobed ovary, and distinguished from the two other species of Neoplagioporous by body shape and distribution of vitelline follicles. The morphological characteristics, except the ovary, well corresponded to those of the previous descriptions. The morphological difference of the ovary was considered as a character of geographical phenotypic variation.
