  • We aim to reinterpret Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer through theory of posthumanism. Posthuman is a compound word of 'post' and 'human', which means transcendent-man. However, we would like to extend the meaning of posthuman or cyborgs as not only to "new human figure, or transcendent-man" but as to "human living in a digital age of converged technology". Through the extension of the meaning of posthuman, we would be able to not only find posthuman in Science Fiction movies but also apply it to our real world. Also, through the extended meaning, we will reinterpret all the elements from the film as cyberspace and as posthuman or cyborgs. Moreover, through examination of these "cyborg figures" in Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer (2013), we argue that the film is criticizing posthumanism in the reality that these days, people are losing the humanity due to the combination with the machine. It seems that he claims of the collapse of the current system, suggesting new human generation as the solution.

  • The first generation of Japan's smart city policies began around 2010. However, the latest trends in smart city policies and the impacts of the first generation on the latter one were not fully covered in either official documents or academic literature. In such circumstances, the purposes of this study were firstly to identify outcomes derived from the smart city projects in the first generation, and then, to reveal the present situation of the latest smart city policies, including the influence of the first generation on these state of the art policies. The present study was also intended to evaluate the validity of a conceptual framework presented by Fernandez-Anez et al. (2018) for smart city policies. As a result, it was revealed that (1) policy outputs and outcomes derived from the smart city policies in the first generation were highly regarded, (2) the conceptual framework of smart city policies was evaluated as valid, and (3) the second generation of smart city policies after Society 5.0 was characterized by the establishment of smart city platforms.

  • Translation has attained an important role in transmission and maintenance of human culture. As the world gets closer translation is regarded as one of the most useful means to carry knowledge and information through the language barrier. Translations of literary works in particular have been regarded as one of the most valuable means of helping people to understand and cooperate with one another in the interest of world peace. Korea has maintained a very close relationship with the United States of America since she first opened her door to the States in 1882. No one can deny that American has had a strong influence on Korean culture, politics, economics and education through the long close relationship between two countries. This study has been carried to find out how many and what American literary works have been introduced into Korea through translation from 1882 to 1982.

  • It is quite common today for bride to wear white-colored wedding-dress in wedding ceremony. When does the color date back to? What does the “white” mean? Which other colors had been used for wedding dress and why? This research paper aims to answer those historical questions through literature review. It is found here that the “white” began to be generally accepted for a wedding dress color in the 18th century, and that the color became an official one since the marriage of Queen Victoria's (i.e. 1840). Prior to that, other colors were taken rather than the “white”. In ancient Greece and Roma, “Red” and “Yellow” were used to remove devils or to bring fortune. In medieval society, luxurious wedding dresses were popular and various colors were adopted in order to show up family power among leading classes. The “White” has meant purity of bride since the 18th century. However, two world wars in the 20th century happened to lead some brides in economic difficulty wear “black” colored wedding dress for a practical reason. After the world wars, some light colors such as white, beige, ivory are to be used in wedding dress.

  • The purpose of this study is to help teachers and program developers develop comprehensive and authentic assessment models with appropriate ways of using various kinds of assessment tools in college English instruction and assessment. Assessing by traditional discrete tests based on grammar and vocabulary cannot measure the authentic ability for language use in meaningful context in the real world. Currently, the trend in language assessment is changing to performance assessment. Increased use of performance assessments that involve language students in selecting and reflecting on their learning means that language teachers will have a wider range of evidence on which to judge whether students are becoming purposeful and are able to communicate as English users. Also, language programs focused on performance assessment are likely to instil in students authentic skills related to communication in the global world and enable them to evaluate what they learn from their English classes. In this study, the author investigated the theoretical background, the need of change, and several types of performance assessment.

  • The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of content and formal schemata for processing the scientific texts which encompass the human knowledge of the physical world. In general, schema theory is based on the culture-oriented background of a text. From this point of view, the problem as to whether both content and formal schemata are applicable to the comprehension of a scientific text deserves a focal attention in terms of information processing modes. The results of empirical study indicate that whereas the universality of general knowledge content about the natural world attenuates the tenets of schema theory, the rhetorical organization of scientific texts encourages the application of the schema-based approach; the reader's familiarity with the structural patterns of a text facilitates his reading comprehension.

  • The paper deals with the emergence of creative industries in Germany in the last decade and points out the recent development of creative industries at examples from different sub-segments. Recent national and regional policies are reflected and the importance of creative industries in relation to other economic branches will be discussed. Key factors for the development of creative industries are highlighted based on a literature review and a compilation of several empirical research studies. The paper points out the role of Science & Technology Parks for the development and further development of creative industries, based on German experiences. Finally, the conclusion deals with some ideas to facilitate the impact of Science and Technology Parks on creative industries in Germany.

  • There is world wide concern for safety of nuclear power installations after the terrorist attack on World Trade Center in 2001 and several other civilian structures in the last decade. The nuclear containment structure in many countries is a double shell structure (outer shell a RCC and inner a prestressed concrete). The outer reinforced concrete shell protects the inner shell and is designed for external loading like impact and blast. A comparative study of non-linear response of reinforced concrete nuclear containment cylindrical shell subjected to impact of an aircraft (Phantom) and explosion of different amounts of blast charges have been presented here. A material model which takes into account the strain rate sensitivity in dynamic loading situations, plastic and visco-plastic behavior in three dimensional stress state and cracking in tension has been developed earlier and implemented into a finite element code which has been validated with published literature. The analysis has been made using the developed software. Significant conclusions have been drawn for dissimilarity in response (deflections, stresses, cracks etc.) of the shell for impact and blast loading.

  • A sustainable production of electricity is essential for low carbon green growth in South Korea. The generation of wind power as renewable energy has been rapidly growing around the world. Undoubtedly wind energy is unlimited in potential. However, due to its own intermittency and volatility, there are difficulties in the effective harvesting of wind energy and the integration of wind power into the current electric power grid. To cope with this, many works have been done for wind speed and power forecasting. It is reported that, compared with physical persistent models, statistical techniques and computational methods are more useful for short-term forecasting of wind power. Among them, support vector regression (SVR) has much attention in the literature. This paper proposes an SVR based wind speed forecasting. To improve the forecasting accuracy, a fuzzy clustering is adopted in the process of SVR modeling. An illustrative example is also given by using real-world wind farm dataset. According to the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method provides better forecasts of wind power.

  • This paper discussed the application process of the Dot Idea program. The Dot Idea program is an incubation and open innovation program co-created by Unitec, an incubator at Tecnosinos Tech Park, and an SAP innovation team. The main objective of this study was to cover an existing gap in the literature regarding the practical application of an open innovation methodology. Many companies seek interaction with external parties to enable advancement toward identified innovation opportunities. Technology clusters, parks, and incubators have played an important role in promoting connections and interaction. Consequently, the Dot Idea program emerged as a result of a joint effort to create a program using a design science research methodology aiming to foster new businesses and strengthen Brazil and Latin America as a hub to develop new solutions for traditional organizations. In regards to lessons learned, the Dot.health trial had some success but also experienced difficulties; these related to the relationships between startups and a hospital's internal teams, and startups' needs to be funded from the beginning in order to be fully dedicated to a project.
