  • The organizations that adopted ISO 9000:1994 have upgraded to ISO 9001:2000 family through transition period by December, 2003. This paper focuses on the implementation of ISO 9001:2000 QMS in Busan and Kyungnam provinces where most machinery and metal manufacturing companies are located. Based on the questionnaire survey, we calculate ordinal association measures of requirements questions, perform factor analysis, and test three hypotheses to ascertain if there is any difference in implementing ISO 9001:2000 QMS. Results show that a professional manager-CEO maintains QMS general requirements(4.1), work environment(6.4), measurement analysis and improvement general(8.1), and monitoring and measurement(8.2) better than an owner-CEO. In addition, it has been found that customer focus(5.2) and improvement(8.5) are well maintained in companies by internal developmental reasons, and infrastructure(6.3) and purchasing(7.4) are well maintained by companies with long term implementation.

  • Microbial growth kinetics is often used to optimize environmental processes owing to its relation to the breakdown of substrate (contaminants). However, the quantification of bacterial populations in the environment is difficult owing to the challenges of monitoring a specific bacterial population within a diverse microbial community. Conventional methods are unable to detect and quantify the growth of individual strains separately in the mixed culture reactor. This work describes a novel quantitative PCR (qPCR)-based genomic approach to quantify each species in mixed culture and interpret its growth kinetics in the mixed system. Batch experiments were performed for both single and dual cultures of Pseudomonas putida and Escherichia coli K12 to obtain Monod kinetic parameters (μmax and Ks). The growth curves and kinetics obtained by conventional methods (i.e., dry weight measurement and absorbance reading) were compared with that obtained by qPCR assay. We anticipate that the adoption of this qPCR-based genomic assay can contribute significantly to traditional microbial kinetics, modeling practice, and the operation of bioreactors, where handling of complex mixed cultures is required.

  • It was known that many beekeepers use some acaricides to protect their bees. Among the acaricides used in bees, amitraz, bromopropylate, coumaphos, and cymiazole were used commonly in Korea. In middle of 2006, Korean government set maximum residual limit (MRL) of amitraz and coumaphos as 0.2 ppm and 0.1 ppm, respectively. Because the environment of bee farm changes every year, it is needed to monitor acaricides in honey continuously. In this work, ten samples of honey collected from local markets and internet in 2011 were tested for determination of the amount of amitraz, bromopropylate, coumaphos and cymiazole by HPLC-DAD. Levels of the acaricide residues found were less than 25 ppb.

  • This paper deals with the remote control of a quadruped robot by using network concept. In case we have to work out the designed plan under the irregular terrains and have the human friendly actions,. our robot will be required to have walking capability, and patterns with legs, which are designed like gaits of insert, dog and human. Our quadruped robot(called SERO) has not only the basic actions operated with sensors and actuators but also the various advanced walking trajectories, which are generated by Genetic Algorithm In addition, it has the remote controller in order to operate the remote actions such as generation of command via web browser and monitoring the robot status. In this paper the body and the controller structures are suggested and the results of kinematics analysis are also presented, All of the suggested motions of SERO are generated by PC simulation and implemented in real environment successfully.

  • The OPRoS (Open Platform for Robotic Services) framework is proposed as an application runtime environment for service robot systems. For the successful deployment of the OPRoS framework, fault tolerance support is crucial on top of its basic functionalities of lifecycle, thread and connection management. In the previous work [1] on OPRoS fault tolerance supports, we presented a framework-based fault tolerance architecture. In this paper, we extend the architecture with component-based fault tolerance techniques, which can provide more simplicity and efficiency than the pure framework-based approach. This argument is especially true for fault detection, since most faults and failure can be defined when the system cannot meet the requirement of the application functions. Specifically, the paper applies two widely-used fault detection techniques to the OPRoS framework: 'bridge component' and 'process model' component techniques for fault detection. The application details and performance of the proposed techniques are demonstrated by the same application scenario in [1]. The combination of component-based techniques with the framework-based architecture would improve the reliability of robot systems using the OPRoS framework.

  • As the study of internal corrosion of pipeline need a large number of experiments as well as long time, so there is a need for new computational technique to expand the spectrum of the results and to save time. The present work represents a new non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technique for detecting the internal corrosion inside pipeline by evaluating the dielectric properties of steel pipe at room temperature by using electrical capacitance sensor (ECS), then predict the effect of pipeline environment temperature (${\theta}$) on the corrosion rates by designing an efficient artificial neural network (ANN) architecture. ECS consists of number of electrodes mounted on the outer surface of pipeline, the sensor shape, electrode configuration, and the number of electrodes that comprise three key elements of two dimensional capacitance sensors are illustrated. The variation in the dielectric signatures was employed to design electrical capacitance sensor (ECS) with high sensitivity to detect such defects. The rules of 24-electrode sensor parameters such as capacitance, capacitance change, and change rate of capacitance are discussed by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. A feed-forward neural network (FFNN) structure are applied, trained and tested to predict the finite element (FE) results of corrosion rates under room temperature, and then used the trained FFNN to predict corrosion rates at different temperature using MATLAB neural network toolbox. The FE results are in excellent agreement with an FFNN results, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique and leads to better understanding of the corrosion mechanism under different pipeline environmental temperature.

  • The study specifically aimed to identify factors affecting business longevity. It focused on knowing how embroidery enterprises managed to persist in the industry for many years despite the competitive business environment. After discovering the significant relationships of such factors to longevity, problems experienced by the enterprise cluster were ascertained in order to come up with recommendations that can be proposed to the enterprise owners. Embroidery entrepreneurs have been experiencing a continuous decline in sales due to lack of innovation and intense competition. In the evaluation of their personal entrepreneurial competencies, they scored low on risk-taking, persuasion and networking, and opportunity seeking; thus, implying that these are their weaknesses. On the other hand, the statistical results of this study say that longevity is a function of the entrepreneur's competencies (i.e., persistence, commitment to work contract, demand for quality and efficiency, information seeking, and systematic planning or monitoring), the generation currently managing the business, competition, and the customer's preferences. These results suggest that these independent variables are significant and are deemed critical to business longevity. Thus, entrepreneurs have to find ways on how to use these competencies as an advantage in reinventing their businesses and in reviving their industry.

  • Although the rare earth elements (REEs) recycling industry is expected to increase worldwide in hightech industry, regulations for worker safety have yet to be established. This study was conducted to understand the potential hazard/risk of REE recycling and to support the establishment of regulations or standards. We review the extensive literature on the toxicology, occupational safety, and health issues, and epidemiological surveys related to the REEs, and propose suitable management measures. REE recycling has four key steps such as collection, dismantling, separation, and processing. In these processes, hazardous substances, such as REEs-containing dust, metals, and chemicals, were used or occurred, including the risk of ignition and explosion, and the workers can be easily exposed to them. In addition, skin irritation and toxicities for respiratory, nervous, and cardiovascular systems with the liver toxicity were reported; however, more supplementary data are needed, owing to incompleteness. Therefore, monitoring systems concerning health, environmental impacts, and safety need to be established, based on additional research studies. It is also necessary to develop innovative and environment-friendly recycling technologies, analytical methods, and biomarkers with government support. Through these efforts, the occupational safety and health status will be improved, along with the establishment of advanced REE recycling industry.

  • In order to handle client's requests while multiple servers seamlessly work in the web server cluster environment, it is vital to implement a router that execute a routing using TCP information and requested target content. The implemented package software measured packet volume that was generated from data generator, virtual server, and server 1, 2, 3, and could find out traffic distribution toward Server 1, 2, 3. As the result of the study shows, Round Robin Algorithm ensured definite traffic distribution, unless incoming data loads differ much. Although error levels were high in some partial cases, they were eventually alleviated by repeated tests for a longer time.
