  • As important ecological systems, wetlands contribute a wide array of biological, social. and economic benefits. However, wetlands are lost until the present, primarily due to human induced land-use conversions. Society is placing demands for the efficient preservation and management on Woopo wetland as the first largest wetland in Korea. GIS(Geographic Information System) is a rapidly developing technology for handling, analyzing, and modeling ecological information on wetlands. In the paper, Woopo Wetland Management System has been developed by using Desktop GIS and Internet GIS technology to embrace major functions: information query and browsing, spatial searching on map, and rule-based analysis. As a menu-driven system, these functions are designed to be implemented through customized menus. The developed system is expected to be used for the effective publicity service as well as the professional management of Woopo.

  • A comparison of Daphnia magna, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Simocephalus mixtus toxicity test was performed to study the relative sensitivities and discrimination abilities with both pore and elutriate water of Woopo wetland sediments. Sediment risk assessment has been done by standardized preparation method of pore and elutriate water described in the joint US EPA-US Army Crops of Engineers manual. Simocephalus mixtus which was obtained from Woopo wetlands in Korea was cultured and applied to sediment toxicity test. Water quality in Woopo wetland had great site and seasonal variations. S. mixtus was more sensitive than D. magna in heavy metal toxicity test. The toxicity results with S. mixtus reflected the water quality of elutriate and pore water. The results also suggested that S. mixtus could be used as a test organism in estimating potential risk of contaminated sediments.

  • The study on community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates from wetland Woopo was conducted for the long-term ecological monitoring. The wetland Woopo is located in Changnyeong-Gun, Gyeongsangnam - Do of Korea. In 2006, we investigated the seasonal variation of benthic macroinvertebrates with quantitative and qualitative collecting methods. The collection was performed monthly at four surveying region, Woopo, Sajipo, Mokpo and Topyong stream. In this study, 6 classes, 16 orders, 48 families, 95 species were identified on group of benthic macroinvertebrates. The species diversity index and the species richness index were the highest in Topyung region and it was 3.222 and 10.216 respectively. The two species, Cercion calamorum and Cloeon dipterum were quantitatively collected for 9 months. The changes of body lengths of 50 individuals were recorded and the advanced growth on the two species was expected from present study.

  • A wetland is an ecosystem which has high species diversity, rich nutritional substances and high productivity. In this study we used the HGM(Hydrogeomorphic) approach among various evaluation models for the assessment of the Hwapo riverine wetland function. HGM is a method which estimates the functional index of a study wetland by comparing it with a reference wetland. In this study the Woopo wetland which is registered in the Ramsar Convention was selected as a reference wetland to assess the functional index of the Hwapo wetland. As the results, we obtained the functional index values over 0.6 for most indices of the Hwapo riverine wetland. Therefore we found that the Hwapo riverine wetland shows relatively high functional index values comparing with the Woopo wetland and it has valuable hydrological, biochemical, plant habitat, and animal habitat functions.

  • It was investigated what is the reasonable landcover classification system for the nonpoint pollution models. According to the parameters of the nonpoint pollution models, runoff curve number, crop management factor and Manning's roughness coefficient, the landcover classification system was proposed to manage the drainage basin of the Woopo wetland. Also, the rule-based classification method was adopted to extract the landcover information for this study area.

  • Spirosoma rigui KCTC $12531^T$ was isolated from fresh water from the Woopo wetland, Korea. In this study, we report the complete genome sequence of a bacterium Spirosoma rigui KCTC $12531^T$, its complete genome sequence was obtained using the PacBio RS II platform. The genome comprised of 5,828,404 bp with the G + C content of 54.4%, the genome included 4,774 genes were predicted, among them, 4,647 genes are protein-coding genes.

  • Wetlands are generally thought to be among the most fertile and productive ecosystems of the world. They provide a variety of ecological functions to the landscape. In recent years there has been considerable research activity to generate more scientific documentation on the ecological functions of wetlands. Many pollutants released to the environment settle and accumulate in the silt and mud called sediment on the bottoms of wetlands. Contaminated sediment can cause adverse effects to aquatic organism and eventually to ecological system. Sediment toxicity test with water fleas has been done by standardized preparation method of pore and elutriate water methods described in the literature for the need to protect Woopo wetlands. The results of Daphnia magna, Ceridaphnia dubla and Simocephalus sp. toxicity test were compared and discussed in terms of the relative sensitivity and discrimination abilities with both pore and elutriate water obtained from the sediments of Woopo wetlands.

  • Recently, we have a growing interest in the washland construction for the function of flood defense in flood season and also as an ecosystem in non flood season. Therefore this study performed the hydraulic and hydrologic analysis for washland construction plan as sustainable flood defense alternative in flood season and wetland application possibility. The study area is Topyoung-cheon basin in Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam. A Topyoung-cheon basin includes a Woopo wetland which is the largest nature wetland in Korea and a Topyoung-cheon is ond of the tributaries of Nakdong river. We assume that the artificial washland is constructed in upperstream and downstream of Woopo wetland, and In flood season, the hydraulic analysis for the investigation of the effectiveness of flood level mitigation is performed by HEC-RAS model. Simulation of model is performed from 7 scenarioes of washland construction. As the result in flood season, the flood level is reduced by maximum 0.56 meter as we construct the washlands by 7 scenarios. Also, we performed hydrologic analysis for the investigation of water balance in washland in non flood season using SWAT model. From the result of water balance analysis, we found that the minimum water level of washland was maintained in about 1.3 meter for one year.
