Hot-water soluble extracts were prepared from medium-sized barks of Siberian larch (Larix gmelineii). The extracts were fractionated by ultrafiltration method for producing uniform quality of adhesives. Molecular weight distribution of the extracts was ranged of 100 to 300.000. pH of the extracts affected amounts of flux, and the range of pH 6~pH 8 was proper for wood adhesives, because of easy concentration and fast gelation time. Removal of particles greater than $0.45{\mu}m$ from the extracts increased both filtration speed (flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. In ultrafiltration process. operating pressure, filtrate temperature, and flow rate significantly increased with the increase of individual condition. Ultrafiltration using PM10 membrane was very effective to fractionate and concentrate the extracts. Removal of large particles greater than 0.45 m from the extracts increased filtration speed(flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. A gelation time was accelerated with the increasing pH of the extracts and its concentration. The Stiasny precipitate(26%) from the filtrate obtained by PM 10 membrane was very lower than that(78%) of the retentates. This ultrafiltration method was efficient for obtaining high yield purified phenolic compounds.
As a part of abating formaldehyde emission of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesive, this study was conducted to investigate chemical structures of UF resin adhesives with different formaldehyde/urea (F/U) mole ratios, using carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance ($^{13}C$-NMR) spectroscopy. UF resin adhesives were synthesized at four different F/U mole ratios such as 1.6, 1.4, 1.2, and 1.0 for the analysis. The analysis $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy showed that UF resin adhesives with higher F/U mole ratios (i.e., 1.6 and 1.4) had two distinctive peaks, indicating the presence of dimethylene ether linkages and methylene glycols, a dissolved form of free formaldehyde. But, these peaks were not detected at the UF resins with lower F/U mole ratios (i.e., 1.2 and 1.0). These chemical structures present at the UF resins with higher F/U mole ratios indicated that UF resin adhesive with higher F/U mole ratio had a greater contribution to the formaldehyde emission than that of lower F/U mole ratio. Uronic species were detected for all UF resins regardless of F/U mole ratios.
In this study, we synthesized rosin-based epoxy resin and manufactured two components adhesives and epoxy putty using this epoxy resin. This study manufactured main element of adhesives for enabling it to form epoxide group by letting epichlorohydrin react to maleic anhydride modified rosin, and used room temperature curing type triethylenetetramine for hardener. The ratio between main element and hardener of of manufactured adhesives was 100 : 20, and main element and hardener of filling material were manufactured as clay type by mixing them with filler. Manufactured undiluted adhesives and filling material showed very stable result in the adhesive strength (3.06 MPa) and ultraviolet irradiation, showing outstanding result comparing to existing restoration adhesives. And it is considered a material having reversibility as it was dissolved in organic solvents such as acetone and toluene after being hardened, which showed a result that solved part of possible problems caused by restoration. As a result of use and application of manufactured adhesives and filling material for actual wood crafts, they showed excellent results in workability, stability, removability etc., and this study confirmed that the material can be used for and applied to various fields.
The bending and compression strength properties of two types Rhus verniciflua specimens, which made of no heat-treated wood and heat-treated wood for urushiol extraction, were measured. The heat-treated specimens were finger-jointed with either resorcinol-phenol or polyurethane resin adhesives, and the vertical type bending strength property was also measured in these specimens. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. The correlation coefficient between the compression strength and specific gravity in the specimens of no heat-treated and heat-treated wood was high. However there was no difference in compression strength property as affected by heat treatment. 2 The correlation coefficient between the bending strength and specific gravity in the specimens of no heat-treated and heat-treated wood was also high. However, there was no difference in bending strength property as affected by heat treatment. 3 The bending test showed high correlation between modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture for the specimens made of no heat-treated and heat-treated wood. However, there was no difference in bending strength property between the specimens made of heat-treated and no heat-treated wood. 4. The efficiencies of bending strength test on the finger-jointed specimens of heat-treated wood with resorcinol-phenol and polyurethane resin adhesives were 0.85, 0.81. respectively.

This study started from the need to improve one of shortcomings of synthetic PVAc adhesives - potential physical harm and environmental hazards to the workers or their users. As a matter of fact, PVAc adhesives are currently mainly used because of their convenience and economy for the production of woodcrafts. The purpose of this study was to develop natural adhesives through research on natural adhesives in step with the current increase of societal attention to environmental friendliness and rapid surge in their demand in the face of such problems. So, the study attempted research on the bases to develop natural adhesives for woodcraft, using cellulose extracts from wood - natural adhesive material. The findings of the study were as follows. Firstly, natural adhesives showed the improved effect in the field of adhesive strength, a basic physical property by 0.2 - 4 times compared with the existing materials and the study confirmed they had the similar or stable pH value. Besides, they had good reversibility, demonstrating their basic physical property as a natural adhesive for woodcraft. While, their durability to ultraviolet ray degradation also showed an excellent result value being better by 1.5 - 8.5 times than the existing materials. The study expects natural adhesives with improved and better performances compared with the existing materials could be developed, if further research on adhesive strength, antibiosis, conservative property were to continue by developing refinery technology for cellulose extracts from wood and rendering the functionality to them.

In this study, reaction mechanism and curing characteristics of adhesives formulated with NaOH- and $H_2SO_4$-hydrolyzed chicken feather (CF) and formaldehyde-based crosslinkers were investigated by FT-IR and DSC. In addition, adhesive properties and formaldehyde emission of medium-density fiberboards (MDF) applied with the adhesives were measured. CF-based adhesives having a solid content of 40% and over were very viscous at $25^{\circ}C$, but the viscosity reduced to $300{\sim}660m{\cdot}Pa{\cdot}s$ at $50^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the adhesives could be used as a sprayable resin. Through the FT-IR spectra of liquid and cured CF-based adhesives, addition reaction of methylol group and condensation reaction between the functional groups with the use of formaldehyde-based crosslinkers were identified. From the analysis of DSC, it was elucidated for CF-based adhesives to require a higher pressing temperature or longer pressing time comparing to commercial urea-formaldehyde (C-UF) resin. MDF bonded with CF-based adhesives, which was formulated with 5% NaOH-hydrolyzed CF (CF-AK-5%) and PF of formaldehyde to phenol mole ratio of 2.5 (PF-2.5), and pressed for 8 min had higher MOR and IB than those with other CF-based adhesives. MOR and IB of MDF bonded with the CF-based adhesives regardless of formulation type and pressing time were higher than those with C-UF resin. When the values compared with the minimum requirements of KS standard, IB exceeded the KS standard in all formulations and pressing time, but MOR of only MDF bonded with CF-AK-5% and PF-2.5 and pressed for 8 min satisfied the KS standard. What was worse, 24-TS of MDF bonded with all CF-based adhesives did not satisfied the KS standard. However, MOR and 24-TS can be improved by increasing the target density of MDF or the amount of wax emulsion, which is added to improve the water resistance of MDF. Importantly, the use of CF-based adhesives decreased greatly the formaldehyde emission. Based on the results, we reached the conclusion that CF-based adhesives formulated under proper conditions had a potential as a sprayable resin for the production of wood panels.
The bending performance of sloped finger-jointed Rhus verniciflua were tested in order to improve the strength properties of finger-joint. Sloped finger-cut pieces were jointed with three kinds of adhesives (polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl-acryl acetate and oilic resin). The slope ratios of finger joints were 0, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. The MOE, MOR and deflection to maximum load in bending of sloped finger-joints and solid wood specimen were measured. The results were : 1) The efficiencies of MOE to finger and sloped finger-joints to the solid wood were almost same in the three kinds of adhesives(polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl-acryl acetate and oilic urethane resin) and there were some effect of slope on the MOE in a sloped finger-joint for three kinds of resin adhesives. 2) There was the effect of slope on the MOR in sloped finger-joints in every kind of adhesive. The efficiencies of MOR in slope ratios of 0 and 2.0 ranged 65-79%, respectively. There was also a slight effect of the kinds of adhesives on the MOR. However, the efficiencies of deflection to the urethane resin adhesive were much less than those of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl-acryl acetate resin adhesives except the slope ratio of 0. 3) It might be impossible to estimate the bending stregth of sloped finger-jointed Rhus verniciflua by using MOE. The correlation coefficient(0.192) between MOE was very low and not significant at 5% level.

In this study, the possibility of using pyrolysis oil as wood adhesives was explored. Especially, adhesives were formulated by reacting pyrolysis oil and formaldehyde and also partially replacing phenol with pyrolysis oil in phenol-formaldehyde (PF) adhesive and soy hydrolizate/PF adhesive formulation. The pine wood was fast pyrolyized and the oils were obtained from a series of condensers in the pyrolysis system. The oils from each condenser were first reacted with formaldehyde to explore potential use of the oil itself as adhesive. The lap-shear bond strength test results indicated that the oil itself could be polymerized and form bonds between wood adherends. The oils from each condenser were then mixed together and used as partial replacement of phenol (25, 33, and 50% by weight) in phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. The bond strength of the oil containing PF adhesives was decreased as percent phenol replacement level increased. However, no significant difference was found between 25 and 33% of phenol replacement level. The oil-contained PF resins at 25, 33, and 50% phenol replacement level with different NaOH/Phenol (Pyrolysis oil) molar ratio were further formulated with soy hydrolizate to make soy hydrolizate/pyrolysis oil-phenol formaldehyde adhesive at 6:4 weight (wt) ratio and used for fiberboard manufacturing. Surface internal bond strength (IB) of the boards bonded with 33% replacement at 0.3 NaOH/Phenol (Pyrolysis oil) molar ratio performed better than other replacement levels and molar ratios. Thickness swelling after 24 hr cold water soaking and after 2 hr in boiling water was increased as % replacement of pyrolysis oil increased.
The crystalline domain of thermosetting urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins at low formaldehyde-to-urea (F/U) molar ratios (≤ 1.0) is known to be responsible for their poor performance as wood adhesives. Crystallization has been observed in 1.0 F/U UF resins during the addition reaction stage and at the end of the synthesis process (neat UF resins). The crystallinity and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of the uncured neat UF resins, on the other hand, differed significantly from those of the cured neat UF resins, raising the possibility that their crystal structures were also different. This study demonstrates for the first time that the crystalline domains in 1.0 F/U UF resins generated from uncured and cured samples are identical. Despite having a lower crystallinity value, the synchrotron XRD patterns of purified neat UF resins were equivalent to the XRD patterns of cured neat UF resins. Transmission electron microscope images of the cured UF resins showed that the crystals were lamellar structures. This finding suggests that the crystal at low molar ratio UF resins are isotropic polycrystals with random orientation.
This study was carried out to analyze the ultrasonic properties of sound board which was glued with various adhesives and to evaluate which adhesive is the best for the acoustic radiation of the musical instrument. The results are as follows: 1. Animal glue is the best adhesive for the sound board with respect to the acoustic radiation ratio of the musical instruments. Epoxy resin and polyvinyl acetate resin are the next group, urea formaldehyde resin and Hot melt are the third group, polychloroprene(CR) resin is the lowest. 2. Epoxy resin, animal glue and Titebond(PVA) give the highest shear strength and the highest wood failure relatively Hot melt and polychloroprene(CR) resin do not meet the standard because of low wood failure.
