  • Objectives: This study aimed to explore whether there are differences in smoking status between two regions of Wonju-City and Chuncheon-City, Gangwon State, and to determine whether the experience of smoking cessation programs in the region affects quit attempts. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional study in which adults aged 19 and older living in two cities were surveyed using a pre-developed mobile app to investigate social capital for smoking cessation, and a total of 600 citizens were participated, including 310 in Wonju-City and 290 in Chuncheon-City. The statistical analysis was conducted using chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. Results: Wonju-City had a higher prevalence of current smoking than Chuncheon-City. Among smoking cessation programs operated by local public health centers, Wonju-City had a lower odds ratio for experience with smoking cessation education than Chuncheon-City (OR=0.52, 95% CI=0.33 to 0.81). When examining the effect of smoking cessation program experience on quit attempts, in Wonju-City, citizens who had completed smoking cessation education and used a smoking cessation clinic were more likely to attempt to quit than those who had not (OR=2.31 and OR=2.29, respectively). In Chuncheon-City, citizens who were aware of smoking cessation support services were 2.26 times more likely to attempt to quit smoking than those who were not, but statistical significance was not reached due to the small sample size. Conclusion: Therefore, healthcare organizations in both regions should develop more practical intervention strategies to increase smokers' quit attempts, reduce smoking rates in the community, and address regional disparities.

  • Analysis of hourly variations of sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) concentrations affected by regional climates for the period of yellow sandy dusts was carried out from March 31 through April 9, 1993. The concentration of 50, at a coastal city, Kangnung city, was much higher than that at an inland city Wonju in the west, but the hourly distrbutions of $SO_2$ concentrations show a similar tendency at both cities. Under the prevailing synoptic-scale westerly winds blowing over a high Mt. Taegualyang in the west toward Kangnung city in the eastern coastal region, the $SO_2$ at Kangnung is trapped by an easterly sea-breeze during the day and under prevailing easterly winds, it is also isolated by the high wall of Mt. Taegualyang, with its high concentration from 14 to 16 LST. Furthermore, when the westerly winds were dominent all day long the high $SO_2$ concentrations at Kangnung were produced by its intrusion from a urban city, Wonju or China in the west into a mountainous coastal city, Kangnung, to some extent, and when the air becomes rapidly cooled down at the clear daytime or the nighttime, their concentrations are also increased by a great amount of heating fuel combustion. Especilly, its maximum concentrations were shown in Wonju and Kangnung from 08 LST through 10 LST, due to the increase of auto vehicles near the beginning time of office hour and were detected again after sunset due to both increases of vehicles at the end of office hour and heating fuel combustion. During the period of Yellow Sandy Dusts which are transported from China into Korea, the $SO_2$ concentrations on rainy days at Wonju and Kangnung were much lower than the monthly mean values of $SO_2$, and their low concentrations could be caused by the scavenging process of rain.

  • This study intends to examine the behavioral pattern and small area variations of health service utilization within Wonju city. We selected three small areas in Wonju city as the study site: Haksung-dong(central area of the city), Moonmak-myun (industrial area which is located 25km away from the center of the city), and Gure-myun (agricultural area which is located 32km away from the center). The data were collected by administering questionnaire interviews with 526 people in three areas. The questionnaire include the items on health service utilization behaviors, sociodemographic characteristics, health status, and perceptions. The statistical methods used for the analysis were ANOVA and hierarchical logistic regression. From the analysis, it was found that there was a variation of health service utilization by areas. Compared to those of other areas, the respondents from agricultural area showed a high probability of using health services. When respondents' personal characteristics were taken into account, the effect of dummy variables representing areas disappeared. Instead, the perceived health status became the prime factor of health service utilization. This result showed that the small area variations of health service utilization is due to the demand factor rather than the supply factor.

  • Statistical $SO_2$ forecasting technique by multiple regression analysis was designed and developed to predict $SO_2$ concentration in Wonju City. $SO_2$ concentration data measured from air pollution monitoring system and meteorological factors data such as : wind speed, atmospheric stability, surface temperature, relative humidity and precipitation were used in Wonju City during the 1996~1997. As the results, correlation model for forecasting was well fitted with some parameters including minimum temperature, wind speed and the $SO_2$ concentration of the previous day.

After identifying users' needs and reasons for modifying the fields of data, we added new indicators to the Web database. Some redundant indicators were deleted based on users' requests. The Web database quality evaluations were performed by using 13 quality evaluations constructs. Through all 13 constructs, less than 20% of study subjects felt that it did not satisfy their needs or expectations. Well developed and verified contents of the Web database for healthy city are very essential and important. The database makes healthy city projects alive by managing and sharing healthy city related data and indicators effectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate comparatively the content of the Expanded National Immunization Program according to the provision method between 2005 and 2006 in Korea. We assessed the impact of the mutually exclusive vaccination policy using the result reports of the 2005 and 2006 Demonstration Project and the related references by the content analysis. The public health centers paid vaccination fees to the private clinic and hospital in the 2005 Demonstration Project in Daegu metropolitan city and Gunpo city. But, the public health centers directly supplied free vaccination services to the children in the 2006 Demonstration Project in Gangneung city, Yangsan city, and Yeongi-gun. The total budgets of 2005 and 2006 Demonstration Project were 6.57 billion won and 0.65 billion won, respectively. The computerized registration rates and timeliness rates of administration of each vaccination had improved all in the 5 Demonstration Project regions. However, the computerized registration rates of most vaccination in Gunpo city were higher than those in the 2006 Demonstration Project regions except hepatitis B. Especially, the computerized registration rate of BCG was 48.3%, but the BCG coverage rate by the follow-up telephone survey was 99.8% in Daegu metropolitan city. The community parents in all the regions were satisfied because of expanding financial and geographical access to immunization coverage. In conclusions, from the aspect of the main outcomes, the implementation of two different financial immunization aids appears to be widely accepted among these parents and to have had an impact on vaccination coverage. In the future, the government must try to enact that the national immunization policy including under-immunised or incompletely immunised groups would be achieved by the affordable method of the public-private dynamics.

This descriptive-correlational study was measured physical health status(pain, fatigue, physical disability, joint flexibility) and psycho-social health status(social function disability, self-efficacy, depression). The clients were consisted of 127 arthritis clients who were randomly selected from health center, 2 sub health center and 6 primary health care center in Wonju City. The data was collected from November 2000 to January 2001. The results of the study analyzed using a SPSS win were as follows: 1) The subjects' average age was 64.81 years old(female: 86.6%, male: 13.4%). 2) In physical health status, the average score of fatigue was 63 scores and pain was 69.77. Physical disability score was higher than total disability score. In psychosocial disability, housekeeping management disability score was higher than social function disability score. In psycho-social health status, the average score of self-efficacy was 70.86 and the subjects have higher level of depression, more than 20 scores. 3) On pain sites, almost of subjects complained of a knee joint pain. The waist, wrist, and shoulder joint pain were followed. The numbers of pain site were 8.3 per individuals. 4) The flexibility of knee and shoulder joint were lower than another joints. 5) Correlation with fatigue, pain, physical disability, social disability, self-efficacy and depression was revealed highly significant. We suggest that health promotion program considering our research results should be provided for arthritis clients in community level.
