American Women's Adoption of Pants and the Changing Definition of Femininity during World War II

  • Articles from The New York Times and magazines including Consumer Digest, Journal of Home Economics, Scholastic, Time and Woman's Home Companion were analyzed in this study and focused on the following research questions: How did the social situation influence American women's adoption of pants during World War II? How were the social opinions of women's adoption of pants? How did American women's adoption of pants and the social opinions on women's pants represent the process of change in the definition of femininity during World War II? Women were encouraged to wear pants in work places because many women had to work in defense industries and farms. Women had to wear pants during the winter to keep warm in order to conserve oil, rubber, and other materials. In addition, wearing men's clothes became a fashion trend among college women during this period. However, practicality was often not the primary thing alone to consider in women's fashion. Femininity was still important in women's fashion. There were criticisms over the women's adoption of pants. Regulations against pants were imposed on women, while there were women who wanted to dress like ladies even at defense industries. An abrupt change in women's gender roles and the increased adoption of trousers aroused social ambivalence about the traditional definition of femininity. Even though many women returned to their homes after the war, the social demand of practicality in women's day-time clothes during the war offered women the experience of comfort and practicality in pants. These experiences contributed to paving the way for more women to adopt pants and helped establishing a new definition of femininity after the war.

육아휴직 후 복직 간호사의 양육스트레스, 일-가정 갈등, 자아탄력성이 재직의도에 미치는 영향 (Do parenting stress, work-family conflict, and resilience affect retention intention in Korean nurses returning to work after parental leave?: a cross-sectional study)

  • Purpose: This study investigated whether parenting stress, work-family conflict, resilience affect retention intent in Korean nurses returning to work after parental leave. Methods: The participants in this study were 111 nurses recruited from 10 hospitals in Korea, who were working after formal parental leave from their hospitals. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, the Mann-Whitney U-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression. Results: Retention intention (33.80±7.78), parenting stress (101.70±17.57), and resilience (85.02±12.75) were at greater than moderate levels and a midpoint level of work-family conflict (29.63±7.00) was noted in this sample of mostly women nurses in their 30s. The factors affecting retention intent were parental leave duration, the number of times that participants had taken parental leave, health condition, work-family conflict, and resilience. The total explanatory power of these variables was 36.7%. Retention intent had a negative correlation with parenting stress and work-family conflict. Conversely, retention intent was positively correlated with resilience. Conclusion: This study supports the need for flexible adjustment of returning nurses' working hours and family-friendly policies to promote balance between work and family. It is also necessary to develop and apply measures that boost resilience and support health improvement for nurses returning to work.As nurses are often assigned to new areas of work upon return, training programs to aid their adjustment may also be helpful.

보건진료전담공무원의 업무분석과 직무만족도 (Working Patterns and Job Satisfaction in Primary Health Practitioners)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency and duration of primary health practitioners' work, and their job satisfaction, and to confirm differences in work and job satisfaction by type of primary health care post. Methods: Work frequency, duration of work, and job satisfaction were estimated by 371 primary health practitioners. Chi-square test and t-test were used to identify the differences in working patterns and job satisfaction by type of primary health care post. Results: Primary health practitioners were found to spend more time working with the elderly population than with students, pregnant women, children, people with disabilities, and multicultural families. Those in costal areas were more concerned with students than those working inland. In the latter group of practitioners, more time was spent working with patients with chronic diseases, pregnant women, women, children, multicultural families, and mental health clients. Also, the job satisfaction of inland primary health practitioners was significantly higher than that of costal practitioners. Conclusion: It is necessary to identify the characteristics of primary health practitioners' work, focusing on changes in the medical service environment. Furthermore, it is necessary to provide job training according to type of primary health care post, as practitioners' approaches should differ between posts.

Health Disparities between Black Hispanic and Black Non-Hispanic Cervical Cancer Cases in the USA

  • Background: Globally, cervical cancer is a major public health concern. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women, resulting in approximately 500,000 cases per year. The purpose of this study is to compare disease characteristics between Black Hispanic (BH) and Black non-Hispanic (BNH) women in the US. Materials and Methods: We used stratified random sampling to select cervical cancer patient records from the SEER database (1973-2009). We used Chi-square and independent samples t-test to examine differences in proportions and means. Results: The sample included 2,000 cervical cancer cases of Black non-Hispanic and 91 Black Hispanic women. There were statistically significant differences between black Hispanic and black non- Hispanics in mean age at diagnosis (p<0.001), mean survival time (p<0.001), marital status (p<0.001), primary site of cancer (p<0.001); lymph node involvement (p<0.001); grading and differentiation (p<0.0001); and tumor behavior (p<0.001). Black women were more likely to develop cervical cancer and to have the highest mortality rates from the disease. Conclusions: Findings from this study show clear racial and ethnic disparities in cervical cancer incidence and prognosis that should be addressed.

중년기 여성 한부모의 주관적 안녕감 예측 변인 (Predictors of the Subjective Well-Being of Middle-Aged Single Mothers)

  • 본 연구는 이혼·사별을 경험한 중년기 여성 한부모의 주관적 안녕감 예측 변인을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 여성가족패널조사(KLoWF) 7차 응답자 중 혼인상태가 이혼 혹은 사별인 40세에서 60세 중년기 유자녀 취업 여성 244명을 대상으로 빈도, 평균 등의 기술통계 및 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 회귀분석 결과 중년기 여성 한부모의 행복감에 영향을 미치는 인구사회학적 특성, 개인 및 일 관련 변인으로는 결혼지위, 주관적 건강상태, 여가활동만족도, 스트레스, 일 만족도, 일-가족 향상이 유의미한 변인으로 나타났으며, 우울의 경우 주관적 경제상태, 스트레스가 영향을 미쳤다. 중년기 여성 한부모의 주관적 안녕감 향상을 위해 건강한 여가 활동 참여 및 스트레스 관리, 일 만족도 향상이 중요함을 발견하였고 이와 관련한 중년기 여성 한부모 대상 정책 방향을 논의하였다.

교대근무가 음주에 미치는 영향 및 수면의 매개효과 (The Effect of the Shift Work on Drinking and the Mediating Effect of Sleep)

  • 연구목적 이전 연구에 따르면 교대근무는 인간의 자연적인 일주기 리듬에 적응하기 어렵게 만들어 각종 건강문제를 일으킨다. 특히 교대근무자는 근무 일정과 연관된 수면의 어려움을 호소하는 경향이 있으며, 알코올을 수면유도를 위한 자가약으로 사용하는 경우가 있다. 현재까지 교대근무와 수면 및 음주와의 관련성에 관한 명확한 기전이 밝혀지지 않고 있는 상태이다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 교대근무와 수면과의 관련성을 확인하고, 교대근무로 인한 수면의 변화가 음주를 유발하는지에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 방 법 이 연구는 국민건강영양조사 제6기, 제7기 자료 중 2014, 2016, 2018년도를 분석대상으로 하였으며 총 11360명(남성 5704명, 여성 5656명)을 연구대상인원으로 포함시켰다. 6 am-6 pm사이의 근무형태를 주간근무, 이외의 근무형태를 교대근무로 정의하였으며 로지스틱 회귀분석을 통하여 교대근무와 수면의 질, 교대근무와 고위험 음주, 음주량 및 음주 횟수의 관계를 분석하였다. 또한 매개분석을 통하여 수면이 교대근무와 음주의 관계를 매개하는지 여부를 분석하였다. 결 과 교대근무는 남성과 여성에서 수면 질과 유의한 음의 관계를 보였다(남성 OR=1.37, 95% CI=1.11-1.70, 여성 OR=1.26, 95% CI=1.05-1.50). 교대근무와 음주와의 관계에서는 남성의 경우 유의한 관계가 나타나지 않았으나, 여성의 경우 교대근무와 음주횟수에서 유의한 양의 관계를 보였다(OR=1.34, 95% CI=1.04-1.72). 매개분석 시행 시 여성의 수면 질은 교대근무와 음주횟수의 관계를 부분매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 결 론 이 연구의 결과는 교대근무가 수면의 어려움을 유발하며, 여성의 경우에서는 수면의 부분매개효과를 통해 음주를 유발할 수 있음을 시사한다. 여성이 수면장애에 대한 대처방안으로 음주를 선택할 가능성이 높은 점을 고려할 때, 여성 교대근무자에 대한 보다 적극적인 중재방안이 마련된 필요가 있다.

대구지역 생산직 기혼여성의 취업 및 가족생활실태파악과 대책수립에 관한 연구(II) (A Study on Work and Family Life of Married Female Production Workers and Policy Implications(II))

  • This study examines work and family life of married women employed in a manufacturing industry. Data were gathered from the use of fact-to-face interview method from a sample of 230 married working women. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows : (1) With high rates of change of job, most of the respondents remain unstable in their working situation. It was shown that the important factors influencing job satisfaction of married women are women's life cycle, degree of contribution of wife's income toward total family income, and husband's attitude toward wife's empolyment. The degree of job satisfaction is also strongly influenced by labor structural factors such as pay, work environment and fringe benefits. (2) The amount of household labor time was limited by job-related factors rather than by family-related factors, because among these working women employment itself is necessarily for their subsistance. (3) It was shown that wives participated more actively in their marital communications than their husbands. Most of the respondents showed the syncratic type of the decision making patterns, but this results does not necessarily mean wives exercised an equal power with their husbands. The economic factors and the emotional instability of the husband are the ones mostly influencing marital conflicts of the employed women. It was found that the respondents easily revealed marital conflicts related to personal problems of their husbands(such as extramarital affairs, gambling and alchoholism). However, they tried to overcome the structural conflicts related to authoritarian attitudes of their husbands or economic problems without any complaints. (4) Mothers have difficulty in controlling their adolescent children, due to the weakening of parental authority. Although most of the respondents perceived their employment as having negative impacts on their children, they still have high expectations toward their children. Inspite of low degree of father role expectations and facther role performance of their husbands, most of the respondents anticipated expressive roles as well as traditionally instrumental role from their husbands. Finally, these findings would help us determine family welfare policies in Korea. Improvements in paid and household labor structure of married women should be accomplished at the national level. Also, the acting programs for parent education, marital councelling services, and law enforcement for equal employment between men and women should be provided in our society.

판매직 취업기혼여성의 직무스트레스 측정 도구 개발을 위한 질적 연구 (Qualitative Study for Development of Job Stress Questionnaire for Married Working Women)

  • One of the major health problems of working women is job stress according to many studies. However, existing job stress questionnaires are suitable for men and men's job environments only, and do not reflect emotional labor for sales people. The aim of this research is to find women's job stress factors. The subjects of this investigation are married working women in sales since they experience emotional labor in addition to physical and psychological labor and the work-family conflict is very important job stressor for them. The job stressor of married sales women was analyzed through qualitative research. After I had in-depth interviews with 20 married sales women, I identified 49 new concepts, 3 main categories and 17 sub categories. The results are like the following. 1. 3 main categories are job factor, aggravate factor, and compensate factor. 2. Job factor has 5 sub-categories including 'increasing of selling', 'emotional labor' and 'physical burden'. 3. Aggrabate factor has 6 sub-categories including 'work/family conflict', 'relationship with higher office' and 'relationship with a fellow worker' 4. Compensate factor has 6 sub-categories including 'opportunity of employment', 'discrimination', and 'prestige' Consequently this study newly found some major job stressors for married working women in sales department.

취업한 기혼 남녀의 일과 가족 전이 : 부정적 전이와 긍정적 전이의 통합적 접근 (Spillover between Work and Family for Married Workers : Negative, Positive and Global Spillover)

  • 최근 맞벌이 부부가 늘어가면서 가족(family) 영역과 직장(work) 영역의 전이(spillover)에 대한관심이 늘어나고 있다. 이에 취업한 기혼남녀가 느끼는 두 영역 간 부정적인 전이와 긍정적인 전이에 대한 경험적 분석이 많이 진행되었다. 하지만 많은 연구가 부정적인 혹은 긍정적인 전이만을 다루었을 뿐 이 두 가지를 통합적으로 다루지 못하였다. 그러나 모든 개인들은 일상생활에서 두 영역을 넘나들면서 두 가지 상반된 전이를 매일 느끼고 살고 있다. 이러한 현실을 반영하고자 많은 학자들은 두 가지 전이에 대한 통합적 접근이 필요하다고 역설하고 있다. 본 연구는 직장을 다니고 있는 기혼 남성 721명과 기혼 여성 359명을 대상으로 일-가족 그리고 가족-일의 통합적 전이를 분석하였다. 특히 남녀가 통합적 전이 수준이 어떻게 다르며 그리고 어떤 요인들에 의해 영향을 받는지를 알아보았다. 부정적 전이와 긍정적 전이를 합쳐서 본 통합적인 일-가족 전이는 여성과 남성이 크게 다르지 않았다. 그렇지만 통합적인 가족-일 전이는 남성들에 비해 여성들이 더 부정적 상황에 놓여있었다. 여성 10명 중 4명이 부정적인 전이 수준이 높고 긍정적인 전이 수준이 낮은데 비해 10명 중 1명만이 부정적인 전이 수준이 낮고 긍정적인 전이수준이 높았다. 여성들이 남성들보다 훨씬 많은 가족 관련 책임(예를 들어 가사노동이나 자녀양육 등)을 지고 있다. 그리고 가정을 남성들은 휴식처로 그리고 여성들은 또 다른 일터로 인식하고 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 이러한 현실을 반영하고 있다고 할 수 있다.

Herstory of the Korean Women Neurosurgical Society since 2008

  • The Korean Women Neurosurgical Society (KWNS) was founded in 2008. To commemorate its 10th anniversary, herein we review its history and the status of Korean Neurosurgical Society (KNS)-certified women neurosurgeons. Based on the academic and social activity of the KWNS, we can expect to promote professional work as members of the KNS, facilitate interaction among neurosurgeons, and sustain professional careers.
