  • Wireless mesh network (WMN) is emerging a future core technology to resolve many problems derived from exist wireless networks by employing multi-interface and multi-channel. Ability to utilize multiple channels in WMNs substantially increases the effective bandwidth available to wireless network nodes. However, minimum interference channel assignment algorithms are required to use the effective bandwidth in multi-channel environments. This paper proposes a cluster-based minimum interference channel assignment (MI-CA) algorithm to improve the performance of WMN. The MI-CA algorithm is consists of Inter-Cluster and Intra-Cluster Intrchannel assignment between clusters and in the internal clusters, respectively. The Inter-Cluster channel assignment assigns a barebone channel to cluster heads and border nodes based on minimum spanning tree (MST) and the Intra-Cluster channel assignment minimizes channel interference by reassigning ortasgonal channels between cluster mespann. Our simheation results show that MI-CA can improve the performance of WMNs by minimizing channel interference.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed synchronization algorithm for wireless mesh networks based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access. For time and frequency synchronization, a node requests its neighbor nodes for a change of fast Fourier transform starting points, transmission times, and carrier frequencies needed for synchronization. The node also updates its own time and frequency elements through simple formulas based on request messages received from neighbor nodes using a guard interval and a cyclic prefix. This process with the cooperation of neighbor nodes leads to a gradual synchronization of all nodes in the network. Through a performance comparison with a conventional scheme, we obtain simulation results indicating that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme in random topologies and a grid topology.

  • In this paper, we consider a group mobility model to formulate a clustering mechanism called Dual Coalescent Energy-Efficient Algorithm (DCEE) which is scalable, distributed and energy-efficient for wireless mesh network. The differences of the network nodes will be distinguished to exploit heterogeneity of the network. Furthermore, a topology control, that is, adjusting the transmission range to further reduce power consumption will be integrated with the cluster formation to improve network lifetime and connectivity. Along with network lifetime and power consumption, clusterhead changes will be measured as a performance metric to evaluate the. effectiveness and robustness of the algorithm.

  • Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) functionality had been included into IEEE 802.11s. For WMN, the routing message is one of the most important parts that need to be protected. Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol (HWMP) is the default routing protocol for WMN. In this paper, the attacks and vulnerabilities of HWMP had been identified and the requirements needed to protect HWMP had also been discussed. Existing HWMP security had been compared with the requirements.

  • To mitigate the performance degradation caused by performance anomaly, a number of channel assignment algorithms have been proposed for multi-rate wireless mesh networks. However, network conditions have not been fully considered for routing process in these algorithms. In this paper, a joint scheme called Multi-rate Dijkstra's Shortest path - Rate Separated (MDSRS) is proposed, combining routing metrics and channel assignment algorithm. In MDSRS, the routing metric are determined through the synthesized deliberations of link costs and rate matches; then the rate separated channel assignment is operated based on the determined routing metric. In this way, the competitions between high and low rate links are avoided, and performance anomaly problem is settled, and the network capacity is efficiently improved. Theoretical analysis and NS-3 simulation results indicate that, the proposed MDSRS can significantly improve the network throughput, and decrease the average end-to-end delay as well as packet loss probability. Performance improvements could be achieved even in the heavy load network conditions.

  • Topology management, which includes neighbor discovery, tracking and updating, is a key area that need to be dealt with appropriately to increase network performance. The use of directional antenna in Wireless Mesh Networks is beneficial in constructing backbone networks viewing the properties of directional antenna. The backbone links must be robust to obtain better network performance. In this paper, a simple yet effective topology protocol is presented that performs well compared to its predecessors. Our protocol constructs the topology with the constraints in the number of links per node. The full topology is constructed in two phases. The resultant topology is termed as Web-topology. The topology formed is robust, efficient, and scalable.

  • As the development of IT technology, the way to manage the underground construction site in real time using wireless network communication is being considered. Underground space is limited area compared to the ground site due to the enclosed communication environment and spatial characteristics. BMN (Bluetooth Mesh Networking) technology is a recently introduced wireless communication technology that bluetooth device acts as a repeater to form a networking mesh and monitor individual devices. This article examines the areas to be considered for analyzing the applicability of BMN technology to underground spaces, and the cases studies of wireless communication monitoring systems currently being developed. And the BMN technology which is being developed for the underground application is also introduced.

  • In Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), we usually deploy multiple Internet Gateways (IGWs) to improve the capacity of WMNs. As most of the traffic is oriented towards the Internet and may not be distributed evenly among different IGWs, some IGWs may suffer from bottleneck problem. To solve the IGW bottleneck problem, we propose an efficient scheme to balance the load among different IGWs within a WMN. Our proposed load-balancing scheme consists of two parts: a traffic load calculation module and a traffic load migration algorithm. The IGW can judge whether the congestion has occurred or will occur by using a linear smoothing forecasting method. When the IGW detects that the congestion has occurred or will occur, it will firstly select another available IGW that has the lightest traffic load as the secondary IGW and then inform some mesh routers (MPs) which have been selected by using the Knapsack Algorithm to change to the secondary IGW. The MPs can return to their primary IGW by using a regression algorithm. Our Qualnet 5.0 experiment results show that our proposed scheme gives up to 18% end-to-end delay improvement compared with the existing schemes.

  • Wireless mesh networks are a special type of broadcast networks which cover the qualifications of both ad-hoc as well as infrastructure mode networks. These networks offer connectivity to the last mile through hop to hop communication and by comparatively reducing the cost of infrastructure in terms of wire and hardware. Channel assignment has always been the focused area for such networks specifically when using non-overlapping channels and sharing radio frequency spectrum while using multiple radios. It has always been a challenge for mesh network on impartial utilization of the resources (channels), with the increase in users. The rational utilization of multiple channels and multiple radios, not only increases the overall throughput, capacity and scalability, but also creates significant complexities for channel assignment methods. For a better understanding of research challenges, this paper discusses heuristic methods, measurements and channel utilization applications and also examines various researches that yield to overcome this problem. Finally, we highlight prospective directions of research.
