  • PBS(Pairwise Broadcast Synchronization) is a well-known synchronization scheme for WSN(Wireless Sensor Networks). As PBS needs the set of node-pairs for network-wide synchronization by over-hearing, GPA(Group-Wise Pair Selection Algorithm) was also proposed after PBS. However, GPA is complex and requires too many message transmissions, leading to much power consumption. Besides, GPA is not appropriate to topology change or mobile wireless sensor networks. So, we propose a new and energy-efficient pair-node selection algorithm for PBS. The proposed scheme's performance has been evaluated and compared with GPA by simulation. The results are shown to be better than GPA.

  • The portable mobile devices with high performance and high speed 5G network activate and explode the demands for ubiquitous information services that remove the limitations of time for the communication and places to request for the information. NN (Nearest Neighbor) search is one of the most important types of queries to be processed efficiently in the information services. Various indexes have been proposed to support efficient NN search in the wireless broadcast system. The indexes adopting Hilbert curve, grid partition or Voronoi diagram enable the clients to search for NN quickly in the wireless broadcast channel. It is necessary that an efficient means to evaluate the performances of various indexes. In this paper, we propose an open framework that can adopt a variety of indexing schemes and evaluate and compare the performances of them. The proposed framework is organized with open and flexible structure that can adopt hybrid indexing schemes extensible to Voronoi diagram as well as simple indexing schemes. With the implemented framework, we demonstrate the efficiency and scalability and flexibility of the proposed framework by evaluating various indexing schemes for NN query.

  • In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), most energy saving asynchronous MAC protocols are custom tailored for unicast communications only. However, broadcast protocols are very commonly used in WSNs for a variety of functionalities, such as gathering network topology information, event monitoring and query processing. In this paper, we propose a novel low-power asynchronous broadcast MAC protocol called Alarm Broadcast (A-CAST). A-CAST employs the strobe preamble that specifies the residual waiting time for the following data transmission. Each receiver goes back to sleep upon hearing the strobe preamble for the residual time duration, to conserve energy and to wake up just before data transmission starts. We compute the energy consumption of A-CAST via rigorous mathematical analysis. The analytic results show that A-CAST outperforms B-CAST, a simple broadcast extension of the well-known B-MAC. We also implement A-CAST on sensor motes and evaluated its performance through real experiments. Our experimental results show that A-CAST reduces the energy consumption by up to 222% compared to the previously proposed protocols.

  • The bandwidth of channel and the power of the mobile devices are limited on a wireless environment. In this case, data broadcast has become an excellent technique for efficient data dissemination. A significant amount of researches have been done on generating an efficient broadcast program of a set of data items with different access frequencies over multiple wireless broadcast channels as well as single wireless broadcast channel. In this paper, an efficient data allocation method over multiple wireless broadcasting channels is explored. In the traditional approaches, a set of data items are partitioned into a number of channel based on their access probabilities. However, these approaches ignore a variation of access probabilities of data items allocated in each channel. In practice, it is difficult to have many broadcast channels and thus each channel need to broadcast many data items. Therefore, if a set of data items broadcast in each channel have different repetition frequencies based on their access frequencies, it will give much better performance than the traditional approaches. In this paper, we propose an adaptive data allocation technique based on data access probabilities over multiple broadcast channels. Our proposed technique allows the adaptation of repetition frequency of each data item within each channel by taking its access probabilities into at count.

  • This paper describes measurement of energy consumption when various size of data packets, on the both broadcast and point-to-point of Wireless network interface, are transmitted, received and discarded in the environment of Ad-hoc network. This experiment measures energy consumption using IEEE 802.11 wireless network interface with each condition. Since the measurements induces linear equation, it can provide useful information for protocol designer and developer. And this paper analyzes the information of behavior of energy consumption for the energy-aware design and the evaluation of network protocol on the practical wireless environment.

When a number of clients access CCR documents, wireless data broadcast that supports any number of clients can be an alternative for the scalability. In this paper, we propose a framework for wireless data broadcast of XML-based CCR documents. We design and implement the framework that can adopt various data scheduling algorithms and indexing schemes for the optimized performances of clients. The implemented framework shows the efficiency with simulations adopting various data scheduling algorithms and indexing schemes.

  • The interest and importance of the convergence services for healthcare expand more and more as the average life expectancy increases. Convergence of ICT and healthcare technology unfold efficient and quick health services. Recently, healthcare services provide to clients with apps over web. On-demand wireless data broadcast supports any number of clients to access their desired data items dynamically by responding the needs for data items from the clients. In this paper, we propose an on-demand system to broadcast FHIR bundles for efficient healthcare services. We use time-parameterized replacing policy for renewing the bundle items on the wireless broadcast channel. The policy lets the on-demand broadcasting dynamic by controlling the time duration for the bundles to reside over the wireless channel. With simulation studies using an implemented testbed, we evaluate the performances of the proposed system in access time and tuning time. For evaluation, we compare the time-parameterized replacing policy of the proposed system with regular-number replacing policy. The proposed time-parameterized replacing policy shows shorter access time than the regular-number replacing policy because the policy responds more actively and dynamically to the change of the needs of the clients for FHIR bundles.

  • Intelligent IoT environments that accommodate a very large number of clients require technologies that provide secure information service regardless of the number of clients. Wireless data broadcast is an information service technique that ensures scalability to deliver data to all clients simultaneously regardless of the number of clients. In wireless data broadcasting, clients access the wireless channel linearly to explore the data, so the access time of clients is greatly affected by the broadcast cycle. Data compression-based data broadcasting can reduce the broadcast cycle and thus reduce client access time. Therefore, a simulation framework that can evaluate the performance of data broadcasting by applying different data compression algorithms is essential and important. In this paper, we propose a simulation framework to evaluate the performance of data broadcasting that can adopt data compression. We design the framework that enables to apply different data compression algorithms according to the data characteristics. In addition to evaluating the performance according to the data, the proposed framework can also evaluate the performance according to the data scheduling technique and the kind of queries the client wants to process. We implement the proposed framework and evaluate the performance of data broadcasting using the framework applying data compression algorithms to demonstrate the performances of data compression broadcasting.

  • Multicast routing algorithms designed for wireline networks are not suitable for wireless environments since they cannot efficiently exploit the inherent characteristics of wireless networks such as the broadcast advantage. There are many routing protocols trying to use these advantages to decrease the number of required transmissions or increase the reception probability of data (e.g., opportunistic routing).Reducing the number of transmissions in a multicast tree directly decreases the bandwidth consumption and interference and increases the overall throughput of the network. In this paper, we introduce a distributed multicast routing protocol for wireless mesh networks called NCast which take into account the data delivery delay and path length when constructing the tree. Furthermore, it effectively uses wireless broadcast advantage to decrease the number of forwarding nodes dynamically when a new receiver joins the tree. Our simulation results show that NCast improves network throughput, data delivery ratio and data delivery delay in comparison with on demand multicast routing protocol. It is also comparable with multichannel multicast even though it does not use channeling technique which eliminates the interference inherently.

  • In this paper, we formulate the minimum power multicast problem in wireless networks as a mixed integer linear programming problem and then propose a Lagrangean relaxation based algorithm to solve this problem. By leveraging on the information from the Lagrangean multiplier, we could construct more power efficient routing paths. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the existing approaches for broadcast, multicast, and unicast communications.
