Three-dimensional ultrasonic probes being applied to the medical imaging can be grouped into three depending on the scanning methods, which are a mechanical type system, a free-hand system, and 2D phased arrays system. A mechanical type scanner uses a mechanically driven transducer to acquire series of 2D plane images. By integrating these images, a 3-D medical image can be constructed. A motor driving mechanism is a conventional choice for mechanically driving a transducer assembly which picks the raw ultrasonic images up. In this paper we attempt to design a 3D ultrasonic probe which has a operating mechanism of s tilting 3-D scanning. The motion of a transducer assembly of the ultrasonic probe is analytically modelled. We propose a selection procedure for the diameter of a wire rope driving the transducer assembly and the size of torsional spring which gives an initial tension to wire ropes.

Recently, floating cranes are mainly used to erect heavy blocks or cargos for constructing ships in many shipyards. It is important to estimate the dynamic motion of the heavy cargo suspended by a floating crane and the tension of the wire ropes between the floating crane and the heavy cargo. In this paper, the coupled dynamic equations of motion are set up for considering the 6 degree-of-freedom floating crane and the 6-degrees-of-freedom heavy cargo based on multibody system dynamics. Depending on the cargo weight, the motion of the floating crane would be changed to nonlinear state. The nonlinear terms in the equation of motion are considered. In addition, the nonlinear hydrostatic force, the linear hydrodynamic force, wire rope force, mooring force and gravity force are considered as the external forces. As the result of this paper, we analyze the engineering effect for erecting the heavy cargo by using the floating crane.

In Korea, more than 70% of the territory consists of mountains. Therefore, the construction of roads and railways has generally involved with a steep rock slope in which the event of rockfalls are often occurred due to the weathered rock conditions and rainfalls etc. This is dangerous when the rock falls into the road and railway on which vehicles and trains are running. In order to prevent such rockfalls, the rockfall protection fence consisting of post, wire rope, and PVC coating steel net has most used at the bottom of rock slopes. In a general practice, an absorbing rockfall energy, 50kJ is specified by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. However, questions still remain about whether the rockfall protection fence works effectively or not. In this study, a typical wire rope used in the standard rockfall protection fence was replaced by the high carbon steel wire rod and to validate its capacity of rockfall energy absorbing the field rockfall tests were conducted. The testing results show that a new rockfall protection fence using the high carbon steel wire rods can absorb the rockfall energy more than 50kJ and 20% of construction cost was saved in comparison with the previous rockfall protection fence.
OPGW(Optical Ground Wire) whose demand is increasing worldwide have composite function as optical communication and grounding for preventing transmission line from lightning. While continuous efforts have been made to increase the transmission capacity and speed, the working method to replace the existing ground wire with OPGW under live-line condition is coming to force newly as installation aspects. Particularly, this requirement became more serious in developing country that the electric power supply is not sufficient and power outage is impossible for supply and dead of electric power LS cable Ltd. has developed the new installation method in full live-line condition to solve the confronted problem and to meet the market demand. In this paper, Electric Problems in live-line installation is considered to predict dry-band arcing. This can be used by Makers to predict dry-band arcing in insulating ropes installed on earth wire of power transmission system.
The rockfall protection fence is one of the most common rockfall protection methods in Korea. The typical rockfall protection fence consists mainly of three parts ; H-beam supports, wire meshes, and wire ropes. The design of the rockfall protection fence is made such that the total energy absorbing capacity of the fence. Therefore, resulting from the combined energy absorbing capacity of the three parts is larger than the falling energy of rocks. In present study, a new rockfall protection fence, constructed using expanded metals instead of the existing wire rope and wire mesh for the typical type of rockfall protection fence, was evaluated on its performance by conducting both laboratory and field tests. Also, for a comparison, the same tests were performed on the typical rockfall protection fence. The test results revealed that the expanded material is an economic alternative to the existing protection materials and the expanded metal rockfall protection fence exhibits the higher energy absorbing capacity compared to that of the typical rockfall protection fence.

The design on a riser in 1MW OTEC system is performed. The minimum diameter of the riser is decided depending on intake quantity of deep-sea water to supply an OTEC cycle. An applicable pipe material is selected from analyzing the properties of commercial pipes. The selected HDPE pipe with the low density and strength is reinforced with a lumped block attached at the end of and wire ropes along the riser. A lumped block, connected to a floating structure by wire ropes, with 25% and 50% weight of a GFRP riser is designed to be attached the end of a riser. The structural safety of the HDPE riser with wire rope supporting axial loads induced by a lumped block is analyzed under the harsh ocean environmental condition near Hawaii ocean with the numerical method. The final dimension of the riser and accessories is determined considering the economic point of view. The designed riser will be applicable to the construction of the 1 MW OTEC pilot plant.

The model experiments for the Eastern sea bottom trawl were conducted for the 3 types of ground ropes and 2 types of seabeds to examine drag characteristics according to towing speed. The model net was based on the net of trawler with 750ps and made by 1/78 of a full scale net. This experiments focused on the drags for 3 types of ground rope, the serving wire, the original and the chain types and 2 types of seabeds, mud and sand of bottom. The results obtained are summarized as follows 1. In the case of the sand bottom, the drags by 3 types of ground rope were orderly increased in turn of the chain, the serving wire and the original type. But, in the case of the mud bottom, the drag of the original type is higher than that of the serving wire type and less than the chain type. 2. In the case of the serving wire type of ground rope, the drags by the diameters of ground rope, ø 1.3, ø 1.9, ø 2.6 and ø 3.25 were increased respectively by 23g, 25g, 32g and 42g at the towing speed of 0.4m/s. 3. The drags of ground ropes were increased exponentially in proportion to the towing speed, in the same way in all of three types of ground rope. 4. The ratios of drag of ground rope against that of the trawl net by the type of ground rope at the towing speed of 0.4m/s on the mud bottom were 0.69 in the chain type, 0.64 in the serving wire type and 0.67 in the original type respectively. 5. The Coefficient of drag($C_d$) by type of ground rope according to the towing speed were 10.0~56.7, 3.0~l6.0 and 1.5~8.5 respectively in turn of the chain type, the serving wire type and the original type on the mud bottom, and that on the sand bottom were 10.0~60.0, 3.0~14.0 and 1.2~6.0 respectively In turn of the chain type, the serving wire type and the original type.

The rigidity of pier is important in the analysis of rail on high speed railway bridges. This study is being performed because of followings. 1) Actual longitudinal stiffness of the structure including substructure should be considered in the calculation of longitudinal stresses in rails. 2) There are many uncertainties in piers and foundations for design. 3) Actual guideline for the design of piers is necessary. 4) Measurement on the rigidity of pier according to the types of pier, foundation and soil-condition is needed. Curve for rigidity will be obtained through this study and applied for actual design as the guideline. Stresses in rails can be estimates accurately. A pair of piers, which consists of pot-bearing for fixed support and pad-bearing for movable support, is loaded by steel frame through steel wire ropes. The responses which are intended to measure in the field test are displacements, forces and tilts on the top of piers.

A floating crane is a crane-mounted ship and is used to assemble or to transport heavy blocks in shipyards. In this paper, the static and dynamic response of a floating crane and a heavy block that are connected using elastic booms and wire ropes are described. The static and dynamic equations of surge, pitch, and heave for the system are derived on the basis of flexible multibody system dynamics. The equations of motion are fully coupled and highly nonlinear since they involve nonlinear mass matrices, elastic stiffness matrices, quadratic velocity vectors, and generalized external forces. A floating frame of reference and nodal coordinates are employed to model the boom as a flexible body. The nonlinear hydrostatic force, linear hydrodynamic force, wire-rope force, and mooring force are considered as the external forces. For numerical analysis, the Hilber-Hughes-Taylor method for implicit integration is used. The dynamic responses of the cargo are analyzed with respect to the results obtained by static and numerical analyses.

Five strengthened columns and an unstrengthened column were tested under constant axial load and cyclic lateral loads to examine the seismic performance of the unbounded strengthening procedure using wire ropes and T-plates. Main variables considered were the presence of mortar cover for strengthening steel element and anchorage method of T-plate. Test results clearly showed that T-plates having a proper anchorage contribute to transfer of applied moment as well as enhancement of ductility of reinforced concrete columns. However, T-plate not anchored fully into a column base can seldom transfer the externally applied moment, though it highly improves the ductility of column. The presence of mortar cover for strengthening steel elements is significantly effective in enhancing the initial stiffness and flexural capacity of the strengthened columns, but has an adversely effect on enhancing the ductility. The ultimate moment strength predicted from the extended section laminae method in better agreement with test results compared with predictions obtained using stress black specified in ACI 318-05.
