A Study on the Nylon Wire Holding and Release Mechanism for Cube Satellites by Applying Constant Holding

  • The non-explosive holding and release mechanism is used to prevent damage to the mission component caused by explosives when the deployment structure for Cube Satellites is separated. However, among the several types available, the non-explosive holding and release mechanism system using nylon wires depend on the nylon wire knot method and tightening power of the worker. Therefore, in this study, we conducted experiments with the operation of a new holding and release mechanism system by conceptualizing the Boa System Dial, which can provide a constant tightening force regardless of worker proficiency and deploying a imitational solar panel. In this study, the process of binding and unbinding with constant tension was recorded while applying the novel non-explosive holding and release mechanism using the Boa System Dial proposed. In addition, required advances are indicated for the application of the proposed system to actual Cube Satellites.

열선절단형 분리너트식 구속분리장치의 궤도검증을 위한 비행모델 개발 (Development of Flight Model of Segmented Nut Type Holding and Release Mechanism Using Burn Wire Cutting Method for On-orbit Verification)

  • Pyrotechnic devices are widely used for space appendages. However, a cube satellite requirements do not permit the use of explosive pyrotechnic device. A nichrome burn wire release has typically been used for holding and release of deployable appendages of the cube satellite due to its simplicity and low cost. However, relatively low mechanical constraint force and system complexity for application of multi-deployable systems are disadvantages of the conventional mechanism. To overcome these drawbacks, we have developed a segmented nut type holding and release mechanism based on the nichrome burn wire release. The great advantages of the mechanism are much lower shock level and larger constraint force than the conventional mechanism using pyro. Flight model for on-orbit verification was developed and verified through release function test, vibration test and thermal vacuum test.

대잠용 수온측정계 측정 메커니즘 개선 (An Improvement of Expendable Bathythermograph Measurement Mechanism for Anti-Submarine Warfare)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to improve a mechanism of expendable bathythermograph measurement by balancing wire resistances between plus wire part and minus wire part and by removing effects of sea water resistance between XBT(Expendable Bathythermograph) and temperature recorder. Methods: The problems are exactly found out through the analysis of XBT and temperature recorder circuit. A process of XBT manufacturing that balances wire resistances between plus wire part and minus wire part is added. Results: The results of this study are as follows; the complicated test process such as temperature accuracy test with a cistern is substituted with a simple process of XBT manufacturing such as balancing wire resistances between plus wire part and minus wire part. Then, the temperature accuracy tolerance of XBT is improved up to ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. Conclusion: Consequently, balancing wire resistances and removing effects of sea water resistance improve temperature accuracy of XBT and reduce expensive and harassing process of XBT manufacturing.

Morphing Wing Mechanism Using an SMA Wire Actuator

  • In general, a conventional flap on an aircraft wing can reduce the aerodynamic efficiency due to geometric discontinuity. On the other hand, the aerodynamic performance can be improved by using a shape-morphing wing instead of a separate flap. In this research, a new flap morphing mechanism that can change the wing shape smoothly was devised to prevent aerodynamic losses. Moreover, a prototype wing was fabricated to demonstrate the morphing mechanism. A shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuator was used for the morphing wing. The specific current range was measured to control the SMA actuator. The deflection angles at the trailing edge were also measured while various currents were applied to the SMA actuator. The trailing edge of the wing changed smoothly when the current was applied. Moreover, the deflection angle also increased as the current increased. The maximum frequency level was around 0.1 Hz. The aerodynamic performance of the deformed airfoil by the SMA wire was analyzed by using the commercial program GAMBIT and FLUENT. The results were compared with the results of an undeformed wing. It was demonstrated that the morphing mechanism changes the wing shape smoothly without the extension of the wing skin.

열선절단방식 구속분리장치를 적용한 큐브위성의 구조설계 (Structural Design of Cube Satellite by Using Heating Wire Cutting Type Separation Mechanism)

  • 큐브위성에서는 일반적으로 열선 작동 시 나일론선의 절단과 함께 구속을 해제하는 메커니즘을 적용하고 있다. 이를 적용할 경우 메커니즘은 단순하여 적용이 용이하나 다수의 구조물의 구속 및 분리를 위해 다수의 열선을 적용해야 하는 등 시스템의 복잡화가 불가피하며, 나일론선의 체결력이 상대적으로 취약하여 작용하중이 큰 구조물의 구속을 통한 구조건전성 확보에 취약한 단점을 갖는다. 본 연구에서는 상기의 단점을 극복하기 위한 큐브위성용 구속분리장치와 이를 적용하여 복수구조물의 동시 구속 및 분리가 가능한 큐브위성의 구조설계를 제안하였다. 분리장치 실험실 모델의 동작시험을 통해 분리장치의 기능성을 검증하였으며, 주요 분리 대상체인 상부 및 하부 주구조체가 분리장치에 의해 동시 구속된 상태의 큐브위성의 구조해석을 통해 구조설계의 유효성을 입증하였다.

회전날을 이용한 홍고추의 꼭지 절단 경향 분석 (Analysis of Red Pepper Calyx Cutting Using a Rotational Cutter)

  • Red pepper calyx cutting devices using a impacting force by a rotational cutter were devised and tested to obtain the fundamental data for development of a calyx removal unit. Fresh red peppers with 80∼87%(w.b.) of initial moisture contents were used as experimental materials. Square and wire type of rotational cutters were used to cut the red pepper calyx and the fresh red peppers were fed into the device both manually and automatically. Three rotational speeds of 250, 500, 700rpm were selected for a square, and 1000, 1500, 1800rpm for a wire type cutter respectively. Four types of red pepper fixing unit were used in manual feeding. The cutting rate of the square type cutter was over 50% regardless the shape and specification of the cutter. For the wire type cutter, the copper wire and nylon chord could not be applied to cut the red pepper calyx because of the low cutting rate. But for the fine wire, the cutting rate was higher and the cutting mechanism was more steady than copper wire and nylon chord. The cutting rate of automatic feeding and wire type cutting unit was about 70% for all levels of the rotational speed. The cutting rate was highly related to the impacting point of red pepper in carrier box. To increase the cutting rate using the rotational cutter, a proper device and mechanism was required to keep the impacting point consistently.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDEPENDENT-TYPE STEER-BY-WIRE SYSTEM USING HILS

  • The previous paper described the logic tuning, the vehicle manufacture and the evaluation in the HILS system for the purpose of the development of a Steer-By-Wire(SBW) system. This paper describes the content of applying to a new HILS system, the vehicle manufacture and the result of the evaluation performed in Independent-type SBW(I-SBW) system. Here, the SBW indicates the method of steering both tires by using one motor as the steering gear actuator, similar to the conventional steering system. On the other hand, the I-SBW means the method of steering both front tires independently by using dual motors as the steering gear actuator. As a result, the layout and the kinematical mechanism of the I-SBW system are quite different from those of the typical steering mechanism. Nevertheless, there is no change in the steering column motor system. In the report, we first describe the structure and control logic of the I-SBW system, and then the control effect on this system as applied for both the HILS system and a vehicle. Furthermore, our HILS system involves the actuator mechanism which realizes the reaction force of the road surface with a minimized frictional force in operation. Therefore, it is possible for us to tune the control logic via the HILS system and confirm the effect of the tuned control logic by applying it to a vehicle with the I-SBW system.

한 쌍의 푸쉬-풀 와이어를 이용한 로봇 안구의 팬-틸트 모션 생성 (Pan-tilt Motion Generation of Robot Eye by Using a Pair of Push-pull Wires)

  • This paper introduces a robot eye module, of which two degree-of-freedom motions, i.e. panning and tilting, are driven by a pair of wires. The main feature of the module is that each wire can generate push-pull motion without buckling. It is thanks to a Teflon tube which guides the path of the moving wire. End points of the tube and wire have pivot elements so that a smooth push-pull motion is produced even when the end point of wire is moved by eye rotation. This mechanism helps the eye module to be very compact. In this paper, the structure of the robot eye module is introduced in detail, and the required motor angles for a certain direction of eye line are investigated analytically and experimentally.

  • This research proposes a novel method of shape display to present 3-dimensional objects. Shape displays allow us to feel the actual volume of the object, unlike conventional 2D visual displays of 3D objects. The proposed method employs a wire frame structure to present 3D objects. The wire frame is composed of small units driven by shape memory alloy(SMA) actuators. The drive unit is analogous to the agonist-antagonist system of animal musculoskeletal systems, where the SMA actuators serve as agonist and antagonist muscles. The force in the SMA actuator is controlled by electrical current. The drive unit is equipped with the locking mechanism so that it can sustain the external force exerted by the user as well as the own weight of the wire frame structure. By controlling the current into the SMA actuator and locking mechanism, we call control the angle of the drive unit. A chain of drive units enables presentation of 2 dimensional objects. 3 dimensional presentations are possible by collecting the chains of drive units.
