  • Wing-in-Ground vehicles and aerodynamically assisted boats take advantage of increased lift and reduced drag of wing sections in the ground proximity. At relatively low speeds or heavy payloads of these craft, a flap at the wing trailing-edge can be applied to boost the aerodynamic lift. The influence of a flap on the two-dimensional NACA 4412 airfoil in viscous ground-effect flow is numerically investigated in this study. The computational method consists of a steady-state, incompressible, finite volume method utilizing the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. Grid generation and solution of the Navier-Stokes equations are completed using computer program Fluent. The code is validated against published experimental and numerical results of unbounded flow with a flap, as well as ground-effect motion without a flap. Aerodynamic forces are calculated, and the effects of angle of attack, Reynolds number, ground height, and flap deflection are presented for a split and plain flap. Changes in the flow introduced with the flap addition are also discussed. Overall, the use of a flap on wings with small attack angles is found to be beneficial for small flap deflections up to 5% of the chord, where the contribution of lift augmentation exceeds the drag increase, yielding an augmented lift-to-drag ratio.

  • In this study, a transient structural load analysis system was constructed to calculate the applied load on the suspension equipment corresponding to the aircraft flight conditions based on military specifications. Aircraft flight data (altitude, velocity, acceleration, angle of attack and etc. at aircraft center of gravity) were used as input parameters and the calculated load of the suspension equipment at wings on the left and right side was printed out for the structural load analysis. As a calculation procedure, first of all, load analysis was carried out at the center of gravity of the external store, Secondly, a trial reaction force analysis was conducted on hook and swaybrace of suspension equipment. All procedure of calculations was programed to analyze the structural load automatically. To verify the numerical results, structural load analysis using the experimental flight data was performed.

  • According to the incresement of aging aircraft, Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) conducted a teardown inspection of aircraft's EWIS (electrical wiring interconnection system) to determine the status of deterioration and the influence of failure occurrences due to it. The inspected aircraft were the retired fighter jets that had been used for more than 40 years. By analyzing defect type and the defect tendency, RoKAF can establish the necessary measures for the usage extension of their fleet and furthermore, the analysis results can be used as a basic data for the preparation of it's aircraft aging. EWIS inspection was done throughout careful visual inspection technique by removing all the ducts and pipes located in the fuselage and wings. For the aircraft wiring where no damage was found, the elongation tests were performed to determine the deterioration of wiring according to the location of the aircraft. The connectors, which is the main cause of intermittent failure, were completely disassembled and inspected for internal damage such as corrosion, abrasion, and traces of foreign objects. The detected defects were classified into 4 severity levels based on the type of damage, and the classified defects were weighted according to the criticality which may affects to it's system to establish the action plan.

  • A compound drone that combines a fixed wing and a rotary wing is an aircraft that can take off and landing vertically, and can increase flight time and fly faster with fixed wings. The compound drones are divided into many types depending on the method of adding the thrust vectoring or the lift fan and the position of the rotor. In this study, we designed and fabricated a composite drone with four V-TOL motors in a fixed-wing, and assigned missions to the aviation body, hence judged mission accuracy using the actual flight test. The design process and the mission evaluation process employed in this study can be utilized on the development of various unmanned aerial vehicle.

  • During a survey of marine algal flora, a red algal species was collected from Giseong, Uljin located on the eastern coast of Korea. This species has the generic features of Cryptonemia belonging to Halymeniaceae, and is characterized by the presence of erect foliose thalli arising from a discoid holdfast, somewhat fan-shaped blade with an evanescent midrib at the base, narrow main axes with blade-like wings of slightly undulate margin, a perennial stalk, and entwined filamentous medulla with refractive stellate cells. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequence, the Korean alga nests in the same clade with C. lomation from France and C. seminervis from Spain. Genetic divergence among the sequences within the clade was not recognized thus suggesting that both the species are conspecific. The name C. lomation considered to be valid nomenclaturally is accepted for the entity. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, the Korean alga is identified as C. lomation, originally described from Italy. This confirms the occurrence of C. lomation in Korea. The species appears to be distributed in the temperate region influenced more or less by the North Korea Cold Current.

  • Emission features formed through Raman scattering with atomic hydrogen provide unique and crucial information to probe the distribution and kinematics of a thick neutral region illuminated by a strong far-ultraviolet radiation source. We introduce a new 3-dimensional Monte-Carlo code in order to describe the radiative transfer of line photons that are subject to Raman and Rayleigh scattering with atomic hydrogen. In our Sejong Radiative Transfer through Raman and Rayleigh Scattering (STaRS) code, the position, direction, wavelength, and polarization of each photon is traced until escape. The thick neutral scattering region is divided into multiple cells with each cell being characterized by its velocity and density, which ensures flexibility of the code in analyzing Raman-scattered features formed in a neutral region with complicated kinematics and density distribution. To test the code, we revisit the formation of Balmer wings through Raman scattering of the far-UV continuum near Lyβ and Lyγ in a static neutral region. An additional check is made to investigate Raman scattering of O vi in an expanding neutral medium. We find a good agreement of our results with previous works, demonstrating the capability of dealing with radiative transfer modeling that can be applied to spectropolarimetric imaging observations of various objects including symbiotic stars, young planetary nebulae, and active galactic nuclei.

  • This paper investigates numerically the effect of rotor hub vibratory load components on the airframe vibration responses of high-speed compound unmanned rotorcraft (HCUR) using a lift-offset coaxial rotor, wings, and two propellers. The rotor hub vibratory loads are predicted using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II, and the airframe vibration responses are calculated by a finite element analysis software, MSC.NASTRAN. It is shown that the vibratory hub pitch moment of a lift-offset coaxial rotor is the most dominant component for both the longitudinal and vertical vibration responses at four specified locations of the airframe.
