  • The most common for starting a single phase induction motor is to install a starting condenser and a centrifugal switch in series with the auxiliary winding. Though this method is simple, life of single phase induction motor is short because of malfunction of a starting condenser and a centrifugal switch and efficiency improvement has limitation. In this paper, the starting characteristics of SPIM is improved by sequence voltage control strategy of auxiliary winding in removing a starting condenser and a centrifugal switch. Finally, the excellent starting performance of SPIM is shown through simulation and experimental results.

  • In a motor drive, the current rating is directly related to the rating of a switching device, and the parallel switching operation for a cost reduction is the alternatives because it has the smaller current rating through current division. There are many investigations for the parallel switching operations to equaling the current division. However it remains many problems for practical usage. This paper proposes a new parallel operation which uses a parallel phase winding to remove the traditional effect of switching device such as saturation voltage according to the division of current. The proposed strategy is verified by theoretical and experimental verification.

  • Permanent magnet flux switching motor (PMFSM) is a novel double salient machine which employs PMs instead of field winding for excitation. PMFSM contains only one set of armature winding, thereby features simple control strategy, low cost power inverter and substantial high efficiency. Due to the unique double salient structure and operation principle, the generated cogging torque in PMFSM is critical and quite different compared to the traditional PM machines. This paper presents and investigates various design techniques for reducing cogging torque in PMFSM. Firstly, an analytical model is proposed to study the influence of different methods on cogging torque. Then the optimal design parameters for minimizing cogging torque are determined by the analytical model, which significantly reduces the computational efforts. At last, the cogging torque with different design approaches are simulated by FEA along with the average output electromagnetic torque, which validates the analysis above.

  • In this paper, three kinds of PWM strategies for a three-phase current-fed dc/dc converter are proposed and compared in terms of losses and voltage transfer ratio. Each PWM strategy is described graphically and their switching losses are analyzed. With the proposed PWM C strategy, one turn-off switching of each bridge switch is eliminated to reduce switching losses under the same switching frequency. In addition, RMS current through the bridge switches is lowered by using parallel connection between two bridge switches and thus, conduction losses of the switches are reduced. Further, copper losses of the transformer are decreased due to the reduced RMS current of each transformer's winding. Therefore, total losses are minimized and the efficiency of the converter is improved by using the proposed PWM C strategy. Digital signal processor (DSP: TI320LF2407) and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA: EPM7128) board are used to generate PWM patterns for three-phase bridge and clamp MOSFETs. A 500W prototype converter is built and its experimental results verify the validity of the proposed PWM strategies.

  • Processes for optimizing the coil shape of deflection yoke are proposed A very accurate and practical winding modeler is developed and volume integral equation method (VIEM) is used for field calculation. Two steps of optimizations are done by using (1+1) evolution strategy. Those are dimensional optimization and pin-position optimization Various techniques are applied for reducing computational time for the optimization.

  • Pancake windings have merits that are easier to make high field magnets and replace windings when an accident happens and windings are aged. The current of the whole magnet consisted of windings connected in series was limited by the minimum current of the top and bottom pancake windings where maximum perpendicular magnetic field was applied. This paper propose a optimal design of a HTS magnet excited by a single source, where evolution strategy was adopted for optimal design algorithm. A magnet consisted of 8 BSCCO pancakes was chosen to prove the effectiveness of this optimal design method. Magnetic field at the center of a magnet was chosen as the object function and it was used maximized. Results of the optimal design shows that the increment of the number of turns of the pancake winding make the magnetic field of the center of the magnet increase but the current of the winding decrease for the larger perpendicular magnetic field.

  • This paper describes dual inverter drive for a fractional-slot concentrated winding permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM). PMSMs are widely used in many applications from small servo motors to few megawatts generators thanks to its high efficiency and torque density. Especially, fractional-slot concentrated winding PMSM is very popular in the applications where wide operation range is required because it shows very wide constant power speed ratios. High speed operation, however, requires lots of negative daxis current for reducing back-EMF regardless of output torque. Field weakening current does not contribute to the torque generation in surface mounted PMSM case and causes inverter and copper loss. To reduce the losses from field weakening current, this paper proposes PMSM with split stator and parallel dual inverter drive. Proposed parallel dual inverter drive reduces back-EMF and enables efficient drive at high speed and light load situation. Control strategy of proposed dual inverter system is established through loss analysis and simulation. Proposed concept is verified with practical experiment.

  • Common-mode voltage (CMV) causes overvoltage stress to winding insulation and damages AC motors. CMV with high dv/dt causes leakage currents, which create noise problems for equipment installed near the converter. This study proposes a new pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy for three-level T-type NPC inverters. This strategy substantially eliminates CMV. The principle for selecting suitable triangle carrier signals for the three-level T-type NPC is described. The proposed method can mitigate the peak value of CMV by 50% compared with the phase disposition pulse-width modulation method. Furthermore, the proposed method exhibits better harmonic spectrum and lower root mean square value for the CMV than those of the reduced-CMV method on the basis of the phase opposition disposition PWM scheme with modulation index higher than 0.5. The proposed modulation can easily be implemented using software without any additional hardware modifications. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed carrier phase-shift PWM method has good output waveform performance and reduces CMV.

  • Large magnitude common-mode voltage (CMV) and its variation dv/dt have an adverse effect on motor drives that leads to early winding failure and bearing deterioration. For matrix converters, the switch states that connect each output line to a different input phase result in the lowest CMV among all of the valid switch states. To reduce the output CMV for matrix converters, this paper presents a new space vector modulation (SVM) strategy by utilizing these switch states. By this mean, the peak value and the root mean square of the CMV are dramatically decreased. In comparison with the conventional SVM methods this strategy has a similar computation overhead. Experiment results are shown to validate the effectiveness of the proposed modulation method.
