  • In this paper, in order to examine the effect of fiber volume fraction non-uniformity in thickness direction on the buckling load of cylindrical composite lattice structures, we modified the equation of buckling load of the cylindrical composite lattice structures proposed by Vasiliev. The thickness of each layer of the rib was varied by fiber volume fraction, and material properties were applied differently by using the rule of mixture. Also, we performed linear buckling analysis by varying the structure size, thickness, and average value of the fiber volume fraction of finite element model. Finally, by comparing the calculation results of the buckling load of the equivalent model using the modified buckling load equation and the results of the finite element analysis, we found that the fiber volume fraction non-uniformity in thickness direction can reduce the buckling load of the cylindrical composite lattice structure.

  • The detection of the normal zones in the coil winding and the initiation of the proper dump sequence have been one of the most important areas in the superconducting magnet technology. In this paper, the process to derive optimal dump sequence has been investigated through quench simulation and analysis of magnetically coupled superconducting magnet system. The magnet terminal voltage and maximum temperature rise in the quench initiated point are calculated with respect to various input variables such as operation current, dump resistance, etc. The experimental system is comprised of sc solenoidal coil, data aquisition device, external circuit breakers and dump resistor. The quench behavior of the magnet(e.g., temperature profile and the voltage signal) was measured. From this results, theoretical predictions were found to coincide with the experimental observations.

  • This paper compared current limiting characteristics of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using E-I core due to the location of windings. Since E-I core has three legs and two magnetic paths, the current limiting characteristics of SFCL were expected to be affected by the installation location of windings, either center leg or right/left leg. To analyze its characteristics, the electrical equivalent circuit of the SFCL were derived and the electromagnetic analysis for the SFCL with the designed structure were performed. From the short-circuit tests, the hysteresis curve and the voltage-current trajectory of the SFCL due to the installation location of windings were extracted and compared each other. The SFCL with windings in the center leg of E-I core was shown to be larger magnetizing inductance compared to the one with windings in the right or left leg of E-I, which was analyzed from the hysteresis curve. In addition, larger decreased fault current right after the fault occurrence in the SFCL with windings in the center leg of E-I core was confirmed than the SFCL with windings in the right or left leg of E-I.

  • The major purpose of construction project management is to meet defined targets(scope or quality) on schedule and budget. Korean construction industry is suuering from lower productivity as compared to other industry sectors. 'Management software' of the construction industry has not been developed as fast as hardware in the aftermath of compressed economic development following the Korean War. Therefore, this study is intended to compare project execution at planning phase and at completion phase and identifying the risk factor of construction projects. Construction projects are more extensive and long-winding than any other projects and stake holders of complex interests are often involved. In this study, we identified and analyzed risk factor for domestic building construction projects and outputs of this study will be conducive to the improvement of construction management processes in the future.

  • Power Transformers with more than one secondary winding are not uncommon in industrial applications. But new classes of applications where very large number of independent secondaries are used are becoming popular in controlled converters for medium and high voltage applications. Cascade H-bridge medium voltage drives and Pulse Step Modulation (PSM) based high voltage power supplies are such applications. Regulated high voltage power supplies (Fig. 1) with 35-100 kV, 5-10 MW output range with very fast dynamics (${\mu}S$ order) uses such transformers. Such power supplies are widely used in fusion research. Here series connection of isolated voltage sources with conventional switching semiconductor devices is achieved by large number of separate transformers or by single unit of multi-secondary transformer. Naturally, a transformer having numbers of secondary windings (~40) on single core is the preferred solution due to space and cost considerations. For design and simulation analysis of such a power supply, the model of a multi-secondary transformer poses special problem to any circuit analysis software as many simulation softwares provide transformer models with limited number (3-6) of secondary windings. Multi-Secondary transformer models with 3 different schemes are available. A comparison of test results from a practical Multi-secondary transformer with a simulation model using magnetic component is found to describe the behavior closer to observed test results. Earlier models assumed magnetising inductance in a linear loss less core model although in actual it is saturable core made-up of CRGO steel laminations. This article discusses a more detailed representation of flux coupled magnetic model with saturable core properties to simulate actual transformers very close to its observed parameters in test and actual usage.

  • In this study, the strength safety of a composite fuel tank which is fabricated by an aluminum liner of Al6061-T6 materials and composite layers of carbon/epoxy-glass/epoxy composites has been analyzed by using a finite element analysis technique. In order to enhance the durability of the composite fuel tank, an autofrettage process was used and compressed natural gas was supplied to the prestressed fuel tank. The FEM computed results on the stress safety of autofrettaged gas tanks were compared with a criterion of design safety of US DOT-CFFC and Korean Standard. The FEM computed results indicated that the stress safety of autofrettaged fuels tanks shows instability at the dome zone and uniform stability at the parallel body, which provide an evaluation data for a strength safety of autofrettaged composite fuel tanks. The computed results show that the stress safety of 9.2 liter composite fuel tanks satisfied the safety criteria of four evaluation items, which are provided by US DOT-CFFC and KS and indicated a safe design.

  • The primary windings of the main transformer for rolling stock have several natural frequencies that can occur internal resonance with transient voltages induced on a high voltage feeding line. Factory testing is limited in its ability to determine whether or not transient voltage with various shape and duration can be excitable. This study presents the design of a high voltage windings model and simulation and analysis of the internal resonant characteristics in terms of the initial voltage distribution and voltage-frequency relationship using the electromagnetic transients program (EMTP). Turn-based lumped-parameters are calculated using the geometry data of the transformer. And, sub-models, being grouped into the total number of layers, are composed using a ladder-network model and implemented by the library function of EMTP. Case studies are used to show the layer-based voltage-frequency relationship characteristics according to the frequency sweep and the voltage escalation and distribution aspects in time-domain simulation.

  • This paper presents the analysis and experiment results on the electrical and thermal characteristics of metal insulation (MI) REBCO racetrack coil, which was wound with stainless steel (SS) tape between turn-to-turn layers, under rotating magnetic field and conduction cooling system. Although the field windings of superconducting rotating machine are designed to operate on a direct current, they may be subjected to external magnetic field due to the unsynchronized armature windings during electrical or mechanical load fluctuations. The field windings show the voltage and magnetic field fluctuations and the critical current reduction when they are exposed to an external magnetic field. Moreover, the cryogenic cooling conditions are also identified as the factors that affect the electrical and thermal characteristics of the HTS coil because the characteristic resistance changes according to the cryogenic cooling conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of external magnetic field on the electrical and thermal characteristics of MI-SS racetrack coil for further development reliable HTS field windings of superconducting rotating machine. First, the major components of the experiment test (i.e., HTS racetrack coil construction, armature winding of 75 kW class induction motor, and conduction cooling system) were fabricated and assembled. Then, the MI racetrack coil was performed under liquid nitrogen bath and conduction cooling conditions to estimate the key parameters (i.e., critical current, time constant, and characteristic resistance) for the test coil in the steady state operation. Further, the test coil was charged to the target value under conduction cooling of 35 K then exposed to the rotating magnetic field, which was generated by three phrase armature windings of 75 kW class induction motor, to investigate the electrical and thermal characteristics during the transient state.

  • Composite motor cases fabricated by the filament winding method are structurally weak in the dome when they are required to withstand the internal pressure of the combustion gas. In this study, a finite element analysis is conducted to compare the burst pressure of a composite dome according to the variation of the pressure distribution ratio(PDR). The performance of the composite motor case was compared quantitatively by calculating the stress on the inner and outer dome surfaces and metal boss volume. As a result, the critical point of the failure mode was observed at a PDR between 2.5 and 3.0. A design at a PDR of 2.5-3.5 can reduce the weight of metal boss without fluctuation in the burst pressure of the combustion motor case. Moreover as the design reference value changes according to the dome shape and opening size, further analysis and testing are necessary.

  • This study attempts to examine the process of establishing a Japanese-style garden in the modern period through the perspectives of garden designers, spatial composition, spatial components, and materials used in their works, and to use it as data for embodying the identity of Korean garden. The results are as follows: First, by incorporating elements associated with Koreanness into the modern garden culture, there are differences in location, presence, and subjectivity when compared to Japan. This reflects Japan's relatively seamless cultural continuity compared to Korea's cultural disconnection during the modern period. Second, prior to the modern period, Japan's garden culture spread and continued to develop throughout the country without significant interruptions. However, during the modern period, the Meiji government promoted the policy of 'civilization and enlightenment (Bunmei-kaika, 文明開化)' and introduced advanced European and American civilizations, leading to the popularity of Western-style architectural techniques. Unfortunately, the rapid introduction of Western culture caused the traditional Japanese culture to be overshadowed. In 1879, British architect Josiah Condor guided Japanese architects and introduced atelier and traditional designs of Japanese gardens into the design. The garden style of Ogawa Jihei VII, a garden designer in Kyoto during the Meiji and Taisho periods, was accepted by influential political and business leaders who sought to preserve Japan's traditional culture. And a protection system of garden was established through the preparation of various laws and regulations. Third, as a comprehensive analysis of Japanese modern gardens, the examination of garden designers, Japanese components, materials, elements, and the Japanese-style showed that Yamagata Aritomo, Ogawa Jihei VII, and Mirei Shigemori were representative garden designers who preserved the Japanese-style in their gardens. They introduced features such as the creation of a Daejicheon(大池泉) garden, which involves a large pond on a spacious land, as well as the naturalistic borrowed scenery method and water flow. Key components of Japanese-style gardens include the use of turf, winding garden paths, and the variation of plant species. Fourth, an analysis of the Japanese-style elements in the target sites revealed that the use of flowing water had the highest occurrence at 47.06% among the individual elements of spatial composition. Daejicheon and naturalistic borrowed scenery were also shown. The use of turf and winding paths were at 65.88% and 78.82%, respectively. The alteration of tree species was relatively less common at 28.24% compared to the application of turf or winding paths. Fifth, it is essential to discover more gardens from the modern period and meticulously document the creators or owners of the gardens, the spatial composition, spatial components, and materials used. This information will be invaluable in uncovering the identity of our own gardens. This study was conducted based on the analysis of the process of establishing the Japanese-style during Japan's modern period, utilizing examples of garden designers and gardens. While this study has limitations, such as the absence of in-depth research and more case studies or specific techniques, it sets the stage for future exploration.
