The Northern Sea Route Transit Modeling of Icebreaking Cargo Vessels (쇄빙상선의 북극해 항로 항행 모델링)

  • Main purpose of the study is to develop a transit model for icebreaking cargo vessels in the Northern Sea Route and to select optimum sea routes with the shortest navigation time and the lowest operation cost. This numerical model executed with basic information such as ship capabilities, transit directions and months of transit, can calculate total transit distance and elapsed time, mean speed, operation cost for each vessel. In the transit model. environment information such as the site-specific ice conditions, wave and wind states are utilized for four different months (April, June, August, and October) along the Northern Sea Route. The model also defines a necessary period of an icebreaker escort. Then the optimum sea routes are selected and visually displayed on the digital map using a commercial software ArcGIS. Usefulness of the selected sea routes is discussed.

  • Most of the world's energy demand is met by fossil fuels, mainly petroleum and natural gas. Even though their production is not keeping up with the demand, there are many options before us-solar energy in its direct and indirect forms, nuclear breeders, thermonuclear power, geothermal energy, synthetic fluid fuels, and hydrogen as energy carrier to complement the nonfossil energy sources. But, before these energy alternatives can be utilized, in most cases, it is necessary to conduct extensive research and development work. In order to solve global energy and environmental issues, it is very important to develop and install energy supply systems which utilizes natural energy. The installation of these systems brings the following merits from the viewpoints of energy saving or environmental protection-(a) the positive use of natural energy reduces fossil fuel consumption; and (b) it also prevents environmental degradation. In this paper, the types of natural energy considered is confined to the solar, wind, hydraulic, geothermal and ocean-wave energy. And, the objective of the paper is to describe the state of the art of natural energy and future utilization prospect of them.

A Comparison and Analysis of Ship Optimal Routing Scenarios considering Ocean Environment (해상환경을 고려한 선박항로의 최적화 시나리오 비교분석)

  • Weather routing of a ship provides an optimal route to the destination by using minimal time or fuel in a given sea condition. These days, weather routing came into a spotlight with soaring fuel price and the environmental regulations of IMO and several countries. This study presents three scenarios of voyaging strategies for a ship and compared them in terms of the fuel consumption. The first strategy fixes the speed of a ship as a constant value for entire sailing course, the second fixes the RPM of the ship as constant for entire course, and the third determines the RPMs of the ship for each segment of the course. For each strategy, a ship route is optimized by using the $A^*$ search method. Wind, ocean current and wave are considered as ocean environment factors when seeking the optimal routes. Based on 7000 TEU container ship's sea trial records, simulation has been conducted for three scenarios, and the most efficient routing scenario is determined in the view of fuel consumption.

High-Performance Time-Code Diversity Scheme for Shore-to-Sea Maritime Visible-Light Communication

  • This paper presents a novel shore-to-sea maritime data transmission system based on time-code diversity, using visible light in maritime environments to overcome the limitations of conventional maritime wireless communications. The proposed system is primarily comprised of existing LED-based lighthouses and maritime transceivers (marine beacons, buoys, etc.), and thus is considered cost-effective in terms of implementation. We first analyze maritime visible-light communications on the basis of the unique properties of a maritime environment, i.e. sea states (wave height, wind speed, etc.), plus atmospheric turbulence, using the Pierson-Moskowitz (PM) and JONSWAP (JS) spectrum models. It is found that the JS model outperforms the PM model, and that the coverage distance depends on the LED power and sea states. To combat maritime fading conditions that significantly degrade performance and coverage distance, we propose a time-code diversity (TCD) scheme in which the delayed versions of the original data are retransmitted using orthogonal Walsh codes. This TCD scheme is found to be superior, in that it offers three orders of magnitude in terms of BER performance, compared to a conventional (non-TCD) transmission scheme. The proposed scheme is robust and efficient in overcoming the effect of impairments present in maritime environments with a BER of approximately $10^{-5}$and a data rate of 100 Kbps at a distance of 1 km.

Analysis of Electromagnetic Wave Scattering From a Perfectly Conducting Pierson-Moskowitz Surface Using a Monte-Carlo FDTD Technique (몬테칼로 유한차분 시간영역 해석기법을 이용한 피어선-모스코위츠 완전도체 표면에서의 전자파 산란 해석)

  • In this paper, the scattered field from a Pierson-Moskowitz sea surface assumed as the PEC by the Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) method was computed. A one-dimensional surface used to analysis scattering was generated by using the Pierson-Moskowitz model. Back scattering coefficients are calculated with different values of the wind speed(U) which determine configuration of the Pierson-Moskowitz sea surface. The number of surface realization for the computed field, the point number, and the width of surface realization are set to be 50, 8192, and 128k, respectively. In order to verify the computed values these results are compared with those of small perturbation methods, which show good agreement between them.

  • This paper, presents a comparison between numerical analysis and field test on a real offshore platform in Bohai Bay, China. This platform is a steel jacket offshore platform with vertical piles. The field testing under wave-induced force and wind force etc. was conducted, in order to obtain the dynamic parameters of the structure, including the frequencies of the jacket platform, as well as the corresponding damping ratios and mode shapes. The natural excitation technology (NexT) combined with eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) and the peak picking (PP) method in frequency domain are carried out for modal parameter indentification under operational conditions. The three-dimeansional finite element model (FEM) is constructed by ANSYS and analytical modal analysis is performed to generate modal parameters. The analytical results were compared with experimental results. A good agreement was achieved between the finite element and analysis and field test results. It is further demonstrated that the numerical and experimental modal analysis provide a comprehensive study on the dynamic properties of the jacket platform. According to the analysis results, the modal parameters identification under ambient excitation can calibrate finite element model of the jacket platform structures, or can be used for the structural health monitoring system.

  • This paper describes the numerical modelling for the steady and unsteady forces of 3-D wings flying near the free surface based on a potential based panel method. For the steady problem where a wing flies over the fixed float surface, steady lift and drag forces are calculated for wings with and without end-plates having different sections, angle of attacks, aspect patios and flying heights. These numerical results are compared with the wind tunnel test results. The unsteady problem is treated as a boundary value one where a wing flies over the described wavy surface. The unsteady lift force variations of a wing due to different wave lengths and heights are calculated at different flying heights.

  • Shoreline change due to the littoral drift in Suyeong bay, especially the Gwanganri and Haeundae beaches, was investigated. Average monthly frequency. speed. and direction of winds blowing from between east and south for the last 15 years were analysed, and offshore significant waves were hindcasted using the JONSWAP model. Wave refractions, shoaling, and breaking weir also investigated for the calculation of littoral drift. At the Gwanganri beach major longshore transport of sands occurs from the southwest to the northeast and the shoreline seems to advance in the northeast while it recedes in the southwest. At the Haeundae beach the sands mainly move from the east to the west and the shoreline retreats in the east and advances in the west.

  • As helicopter technology has been upgraded, today its oceanic operation is considered to be usual. In oceanic operation of helicopter, the effect of severe wind, wave, and corrosion must be investigated and the operation procedures for safety as well as the motion of shipboard arising from maneuvers of ship must also be considered. In this paper, it describes the result of trade-off study for shipboard landing and its operation procedure including dynamic interface between ship and aircraft in ship operation and gives a simulation results to implement the oceanic operation of tilt rotor aircraft.

  • Weather routing method is one of the best practices of SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) for fuel-efficient operation of ship. KR is carrying out a basic research for development of the weather routing algorithm and making a monitoring system by FOC (Fuel Oil Consumption) analysis compared to the reference, which is the great circle route. The added resistances applied global sea/weather data can be calculated using ship data, and the results can be corrected to ship motions. The global sea/weather data such as significant wave height, ocean current and wind data can be used to calculate the added resistances. The reference route in a usual navigation is the great circle route, which is the shortest distance route. The global sea/weather data can be divided into grids, and the nearest grid data from a ship's position can be used to apply a ocean going vessel's sea conditions. Powell method is used as an optimized routing technique to minimize FOC considered sea/weather conditions, and FOC result can be compared with the great circle route result.
