The assessment of the potential for the design of marine renewable energy systems is reviewed and the current situation for marine renewable energy is promising. The most studied forms of marine renewable energy are ocean wind energy, ocean wave energy and tidal energy. Wind turbine generators include mostly horizontal axis type and vertical axis type. But also more exotic ideas such as a kite design. Wave energy devices consist of designs converting wave oscillations in electric power via a power take off equipment. Such equipment can take multiple forms to be more efficient. Nevertheless, the technology alone cannot be the only step towards marine renewable energy. Many other steps must be overcome: policy, environment, manpower as well as consumption habits. After reviewing the current conditions of marine renewable energy development, the authors analyzed the key factors for developing a strong marine renewable energy industry and pointed out the huge potential of marine renewable energy.

A rapid refresh wave forecasting system has been developed using the sea wind on the Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System. We carried out a numerical experiment for wind-wave interaction as an important parameter in determining the forecasting performance. The simulation results based on the seasons of with typhoon and without typhoon has been compared with the observation of the ocean data buoy to verify the forecasting performance. In case of without typhoon, there was an underestimate of overall forecasting tendency, and it confirmed that an increase in the wind-wave interaction parameter leads to a decrease in the underestimate tendency and root mean square error (RMSE). As a result of typhoon season by applying the experiment condition with minimum RMSE on without typhoon, the forecasting error has increased in comparison with the result without typhoon season. It means that the wave model has considered the influence of the wind forcing on a relatively weak period on without typhoon, therefore, it might be that the wave model has not sufficiently reflected the nonlinear effect and the wave energy dissipation due to the strong wind forcing.

Floating offshore structures should be designed by considering the most extreme environmental loadings which may be encountered in their design life. The most severe loading on a wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system is wave loads. The principal parameters of wave loads are wave length, wave height and wave direction. The wave loads have different effects on the structural behavior characteristic depending on the combination of wave parameters. Therefore, the process of investigation for critical loads based on the individual wave loading parameter is need. Namely, the equivalent design wave should be derived by finding the wave condition which generates the maximum stress in entire wave conditions. Through a series of analysis, an equivalent regular wave height can be obtained which generates the same amount of the hydrodynamic loads as calculated in the response analysis. The aim of this study is the determination of equivalent design wave regarding to characteristic global hydrodynamic responses for wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. It will be utilized in the global structural response analysis subjected to selected design waves and this study also includes an application of global structural analysis.

A large satellite communication terminal on the truck shall be designed ruggedly against a disturbance for holding a position which satisfies communication performance. Especially. A design considering a wind is essential for getting into a communication with a satellite in a strong-wind condition. This paper suggests a experimental method to analyze performance of a radio wave and the aiming accuracy by wind vibration. And it analyzes the improvement and vibrational effect on a random-excitation of a structure caused by nonlinear strong wind.
The present study deals with the conceptual design of a motion reduction device for a floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation platform. A damping plate attached to the bottom of a column of a large semi-submersible is introduced to reduce the motion of the platform. Performance analyses on various shapes and configurations of damping plates were performed using the potential flow solver, and the appropriate configuration and size of the damping plate were selected based on the numerical results. In order to see the effect of viscous damping, a small scale model test was performed in a 2D wave flume. The performances of five different damping plates were measured and discussed based on the results of free decay tests and regular wave tests.

An extreme value analysis of metocean data which include wave, wind, and current data is a prerequisite for the operation and survival of offshore structures. The purpose of this study was to provide information about the return wave, wind, and current values for the Barents Sea using extreme value analysis. Hindcast datasets of the Global Reanalysis of Ocean Waves 2012 (GROW2012) for a waves, winds and currents were obtained from the Oceanweather Inc. The Gumbel distribution, 2 and 3 parameters Weibull distributions and log-normal distribution were used for the extreme value analysis. The least square method was used to estimate the parameters for the extreme value distribution. The return values, including the significant wave height, spectral peak wave period, wind speed and current speed at surface, were calculated and it will be utilized to design offshore structures to be operated in the Barents Sea.
The protons and helium ions in the solar wind are observed to possess anisotropic temperature profiles. The anisotropy appears to be limited by various marginal instability conditions. One of the efficient methods to investigate the global dynamics and distribution of various temperature anisotropies in the large-scale solar wind models may be that based upon the macroscopic quasi-linear approach. The present paper investigates the proton and helium ion anisotropy instabilities on the basis of comparison between the quasi-linear theory versus particle-in-cell simulation. It is found that the overall dynamical development of the particle temperatures is quite accurately reproduced by the macroscopic quasi-linear scheme. The wave energy development in time, however, shows somewhat less restrictive comparisons, indicating that while the quasi-linear method is acceptable for the particle dynamics, the wave analysis probably requires higher-order physics, such as wave-wave coupling or nonlinear wave-particle interaction. We carried out comparative studies of proton firehose instability, aperiodic ordinary mode instability, and helium ion anisotropy instability. It was found that the agreement between QL theory and PIC simulation is rather good. It means that the quasilinear approximation enjoys only a limited range of validity, especially for the wave dynamics and for the relatively high-beta regime.

The present paper considers the conceptual design of floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. The worldwide demand for ocean renewable energy is increasing rapidly. Wave and offshore wind energy have been attractive among the various ocean renewable energy sources, and the site to generate electricity from wave and offshore wind accords well together. This means that a hybrid power generation system, which uses wave and offshore wind energy simultaneously has many advantages and several systems have been already developed in Western Europe. A R&D project for a 10 MW class floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system has been also launched in Korea. A semi-submersible platform, which has four vertical columns at each corner of the platform to be connected with horizontal pontoons, was designed for this system considering arrangements of multiple wind turbines and wave energy converters. A mooring system and power cable were also designed based on the metocean data of installation site. In the present paper, those results are presented, and the difficulties and design method in the design of hybrid power generation system are presented.
Abnormally large swells that appeared on the coast of the East Sea in October in 2005 and 2006 were simulated using SWAN model to examine the accuracy of the model for future forecasting Seawind data calculated based on the weather chart ant bottom topography were used for input data, and the model was operated more than 20 days before the observed swells to avoid the problems from the cold start of the model. The comparisons with observed wind and wave data were unsatisfactory and neededmore improvement in terms of swell component in the wave model as well as the quality of seawind data. The satellite wind and wave data can be good candidates for future comparison of the wave model results in the East Sea.
The natural disasters such as typhoon, earthquake, flood, heavy rain, drought, sweltering heat, wind wave, tsunami and so on, are difficult to estimate the scale of damage and spot. Also, these disasters were being damaged to human life. However, if based on the disaster statistics the past damage cases are analyzed and the estimated damages can be calculated, the initial damage action can be taken immediately and based on the estimated damage scale the damage can be mitigated. In the present study, therefore, we proposed the functions of wind wave damage estimation for the southern coast. The functions are developed based on Disaster Report('91~'14) for wind wave and typhoon disaster statistics, regional characteristics and observed sea weather.
