At a time when world population and food supply are in a delicate balance, it is essential that we look at factors to improve this balance. We can alter the environment to better fit the plant's needs, or we can alter the plant to better fit the environment. Improved technology has allowed us to increase the yield level. For moderately detrimental weather events technology has generally decreased the yield variation, yet for major weather disasters the variation has increased. We have raised the upper level, but zero is still the bottom level. As we concentrate the production of particular crops into limited areas where the environment is closest to optimum, we may be increasing the risk of a major weather related disaster. We need to evaluate the degree of variability of different crops, and how weather and technology can interact to affect it. The natural limits of crop production are imposed by important ecological factors. Production is a function of the climate, the soil, and the crop and all activities related to them. In looking at the environment of a crop we must recognize these are individuals, populations and ecosystems. Under intensive agriculture we try to limit the competition to one desired species. The environment is made up of a complex of factors; radiation, moisture, temperature and wind, among others. Plant response to the environment is due to the interaction of all of these factors, yet in attempting to understand them we often examine each factor individually. Variation in crop yields is primarily a function of limiting environmental parameters. Various weather parameters will be discussed, with emphasis placed on how they impact on crop production. Although solar radiation is a driving force in crop production, it often shows little relationship to yield variation. Water may enter into crop production as both a limiting and excessive factor. The effects of moisture deficiency have received much more attention than moisture excess. In many areas of the world, a very significant portion of yield variation is due to variation in the moisture factor. Temperature imposes limits on where crops can be grown, and the type of crop that can be grown in an area. High temperature effects are often combined with deficient moisture effects. Cool temperatures determine the limits in which crops can be grown. Growing degree units, or heat accumulations, have often been used as a means of explaining many temperature effects. Methods for explaining chilling effects are more limited.

A multi-level design optimization framework for aerodynamic design of rotary wing such as propeller and helicopter rotor blades is presented in this study. Strategy of the proposed framework is to enhance aerodynamic performance by sequentially applying the planform and sectional design optimization. In the first level of a planform design, we used a genetic algorithm and blade element momentum theory (BEMT) based on two-dimensional aerodynamic database to find optimal planform variables. After an initial planform design, local flow conditions of blade sections are analyzed using high-fidelity CFD methods. During the next level, a sectional design optimization is conducted using two dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis and a gradient based optimization algorithm. When optimal airfoil shape is determined at the several spanwise locations, a planform design is performed again. Through this iterative design process, not only an optimal flow condition but also an optimal shape of an EAV propeller blade is obtained. To validate the optimized propeller-blade design, it is tested in wind-tunnel facility with different flow conditions. An efficiency, which is slightly less than the expected improvement of 7% predicted by our proposed design framework but is still satisfactory to enhance the aerodynamic performance of EAV system.
Water surface velocity meters with microwave were applied to stream discharge measurements and its practical aspects were evaluted. The rating of the surface velocity meters was performed through a carriage and a water tank for the ship model test. It gave5.5% or less errors of average measured velocities under the vertical tilt ang1e of 20$^{\circ}$, 35$^{\circ}$, or 45$^{\circ}$ . A surface velocity meter was used to measure flood velocities at Yoju bridge from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on August 26, 1995. The results showed that surface velocities ranged from 2 to 4 m/s. With the measured surface velocities multiplied by 0.85, the discharge was computed as 10,500 m$^3$/s. It differed $\pm$2% or less from the value of a stage-discharge curve and that of an unsteady flow simulation. Although the measured data are used sparsely per 40 or 60 meters, the computed discharges do not give large variation. Stream discharge measurements were also performed under the normal condition without floods. With the known values of Taechong Dam releases. the depth averaging factors of velocity were calculated by 0.83~0.87. Although there are errors from wind action and inherent ones in the velocity meters, the research showed that surface velocity meters could be an simple and practical alternative for flood discharge measurements.

In this paper, we developed a broadband multi-layered radome applicable for high-power applications. In this regard, we presented the wave propagation characteristics of the broadband multi-layered radome with the ABCD matrix and obtained the optimal thickness and the material constant for each layer by an optimization algorithm called "particle swarm optimization," implemented by a commercial numerical modeling tool. Further, we redesigned it in view of mechanical properties to reflect environmental conditions such as wind, snow, and ice. The power transmission property was reanalyzed based on the recalculated data of each layer's thickness to consider the limitations of the fabrication of a large structure. Under the condition of a peak electric field strength that is 10 dB above the critical electric field strength in air breakdown, we analyzed the air breakdown by radio frequency(RF) in the designed radome using the commercial full-wave electromagnetic tool. The radome was manufactured and tested by continuous wave(CW) RF small signal and large signal in an anechoic chamber. The test results showed good agreement with those attained by simulation.
In order to examine the generation mechanism of long ocean waves along the west coast of Korea and to understand the amplification process of the long ocean waves, sea level, atmospheric pressure and wind data observed every minute from 2007 March 29 to 2007 April 1 were analyzed and onedimensional numerical ocean model experiments were performed. An atmospheric pressure jump propagated southeastward from Backryungdo to Yeonggwang along the west coast of Korea with speed of $13{\sim}27\;m/s$ between 2007 March 30 23:00 and 2007 April 1 1:30. Average magnitude of pressure jump was 4.2 hPa. As a moving atmospheric jump propagated from north to south along the coast, long ocean waves were generated and the sea level abnormally rose or fell at Anheung, Kunsan, Wido and Yeonggwang. Average amplitude of sea level rise (or fall) was about 113.6 cm. In a one-dimensional numerical ocean model, nonlinear shallow water equations were numerically integrated and a moving atmospheric pressure jump with traveling speed of 24 m/s was used as an external force. While the atmospheric pressure jump travels over 60 m depth ocean, a long ocean wave is generated. Because the propagation speed of the atmospheric jump is almost equal to that of the long ocean wave, Proudman resonance occurs and the long ocean wave amplifies. As the atmospheric pressure jump moves into the coastal area shallower than 60 m, the speed of the long ocean wave decreases and Proudman resonance effect decreases. However, the amplitude of the long ocean wave increases and wave length becomes shorter because of shoaling effect. When the long ocean wave hits the land boundary, amplitude of the long ocean wave drastically amplifies due to reflection. Data analysis and numerical experiments suggest that the southeastward propagation of an atmospheric pressure jump over the shallow ocean, which is a necessary condition for Proudaman resonance, generated the long ocean waves along the west coast of Korea on 2007 March 31 and the ocean waves amplified due to shoaling effect in the coastal area and reflection at the shore.

Generally, sesame are dried on the field after being harvested in Korea. Since harvesting season is rainy autumn and sesame drying is mainly affected sun and natural wind, it is difficult to dry sesame in time. Moreover, sesame threshing by hand is very laborious work. Therefore, tractor mounted sesame thresher which threshes sesame bundles fed in upside down and conveyed along threshing bar was developed to mechanize sesame threshing and to reduce labor cost in this research. the thresher was equipped with a threshing bar which beats sesame bundles and a three layer sieve which screens sesame. The results are summarized as follows ; 1 The sesame thresher was consisted of a hitting-stick, a feeding chain conveyor, a threshing bar, conveyor belt, and the three-layer shaking sieve. 2. In threshing test, prototype thresher showed maximum threshing ratio 98.5%, 98.7% at 14, 17 cpm beating rate respectively. 3. In screening test, prototype sieve showed maximum threshing ratio 97.2% at 12$^{\circ}$ of inclined angle and 220 cpm of sieve vibrating rate. 4. Prototype showed 98.7% of threshing ratio, 1.3% of threshing loss, 97.0% of screening ratio, 0.7% of screening loss on the rest condition of 15 sesame bundles/min of feeding rate, 14 cpm of beating rate, 220 cpm of sieve vibrating rate. 5. The working performance of prototype was 0.5hr/10a. It was 9.6 times more efficient than manual work. And, operation cost of prototype was saved by 45.9% compared to manual work.
The Main object of this research is directed to LG Oil company harbor in kwangyang-hang, where various ships ranging from 300 ton to 48000ton DWT use seven berths in the harbor. This harbor suffered from inefficient and unsafe management procedures since it is difficult to set guidelines for arrival and departure of ships according to the weather conditions and the current guidelines dose not offer clear basis of its implications. Therefore, it has long been suggested that these guidelines should be improved. This paper proposes a decision-support system, which can quantitatively decide the possibility of entry or departure on a harbor by analyzing the weather conditions (wind, current, and wave) and taking account of factors such as harbor characteristics, ship characteristics, weight condition, and operator characteristics. This system has been verified using 5$_{th}$ and 7$_{th}$ berth in Kwangyang-hang harbor. Machine learning technique using genetic programming(GP) is introduced to the system to quantitatively decide and produce results about the possibility of entry or arrival, and weighted linear associative memory (WLAM) method is also used to reduce the amount of calculation the GP has to perform. Group of additive genetic programming trees (GAGPT) is also used to improve learning performance by making it easy to find global optimum.mum.

A numerical analysis on the smoke behavior and evacuee safety has been performed with computational fluid dynamics. The purpose of this study is to build computational processes for an evacuation and prevention of a fire disaster of a 3 km-length tunnel in Korea. To save computational cost, 1.5 km of the tunnel that can include a few cross-passing tunnels is considered. We are going to assess the fire safety in a road tunnel according to the smoke level, which consists of the smoke density and the height from the floor. The smoke density is obtained in detail from three-dimensional unsteady CFD analysis. To obtain proper temperature distributions on the tunnel wall, one-dimensional conduction equation is considered instead of an adiabatic wall boundary or a constant heat flux. The tunnel considered in this study equips the cross passing tunnels for evacuees every 250 m. The distance is critical in both safety and economy. The more cross passing tunnels, the more safe but the more expensive. Three different jet fan operations can be considered in this study; under- and over-critical velocities for normal traffic condition and 0-velocoty operation for the traffic congestion. The SE (smoke environment) level maps show a smoke environment and an evacuating behavior every moment.

In this study, a simulation program has been developed to predict the performance of energy recovery ventilators fur various indoor and outdoor conditions. In order to get a fundamental data about domestic air condition, the heat recovery ventilator is selected with the product of the wind quantity $250m^3/h$ Japanese M companies which are satisfied at High Efficiency Certification Standards. At the case on which the heat recovery ventilator is established, heating load decreases by 69.1% and cooling load decreases by 59.4% in Seoul, and heating load decreases by 66.4% and cooling load decreases by 59.6% in Pusan. The maximum humidification load of winter or summer time with $0.737{\ell}/h$ or $1.008{\ell}/h$ occurred in March from Kangnung or August from Mokpo respectively. In Southern part region and East Sea of winter time, the condensation or frost on exhaust side dose not occurred on exhaust side, but the area of that outside is occurred. Therefore, the preventive measure from the area except a southern part region and the east coast area must be considered, in order to condense or frost not to occur on exhaustion side in winter.
Epoxy adhesive was mainly used to combine different composite materials. Epoxy adhesive was a typical thermosetting resin that can be bonded by changing from a linear structure to a three-dimensional network structure by curing reaction of epoxy and hardener. The curing conditions of epoxy adhesive were different with different types of hardener such as mixing ratio, curing time, and temperature. These curing conditions affected to the adhesive property of epoxy adhesive. In industry, it was difficult to proceed the applying epoxy adhesive and combining two parts immediately. The adhesive property decreased by humidity and pre-curing of epoxy adhesive in waiting time between two processes. In this paper, the glass fiber reinforced composite (GFRC) was combined with epoxy adhesive and adhesion property between epoxy adhesive and GFRCs was evaluated using single lap shear test. The different waiting times and humidity conditions were applied to epoxy adhesive in room temperature and adhesive property decreased as the waiting time increased. In small amount of humidity, the adhesive property increased because a small amount of moisture in the surroundings accelerated the curing reaction. In certain amount of humidity, however, the adhesion property decreased.
