Current climate conditions along with advances in technology make further design and verification methods for structural strength and reliability of wind turbine towers imperative. Along with the growing interest for "green" energy, the wind energy sector has been developed tremendously the past decades. To this end, the improvement of wind turbine towers in terms of structural detailing and performance result in more efficient, durable and robust structures that facilitate their wider application, thus leading to energy harvesting increase. The wind tower industry is set to expand to greater heights than before and tapered steel towers with a circular cross-section are widely used as more capable of carrying heavier loads. The present study focuses on the improvement of the structural response of steel wind turbine towers, by means of internal stiffening. A thorough investigation of the contribution of stiffening rings to the overall structural behavior of the tower is being carried out. These stiffening rings are placed along the tower height to reduce local buckling phenomena, thus increasing the buckling strength of steel wind energy towers and leading the structure to a behavior closer to the one provided by the beam theory. Additionally to ring stiffeners, vertical stiffening schemes are studied to eliminate the presence of short wavelength buckles due to bending. For the purposes of this research, finite element analysis is applied in order to describe and predict in an accurate way the structural response of a model tower stiffened by internal stiffeners. Moreover, a parametric study is being performed in order to investigate the effect of the stiffeners' number to the functionality of the aforementioned stiffening systems and the improved structural behavior of the overall wind converter.

Using large monopod bucket foundations as an alternative to monopiles for offshore wind turbines offers the potential for large cost savings compared to typical piled foundations. In this paper, numerical simulations are carried out to assess the risk of structural buckling during installation of large-diameter bucket foundations. Since shell structures are generally sensitive to initially imperfect geometries, eigenmode-affine imperfections are introduced in a nonlinear finite-element analysis. The influence of modelling the real lid structure compared to classic boundary conditions is investigated. The effects of including soil restraint and soil-structure interaction on the buckling analysis are also addressed.
The design of truss type sign support structures is based on the guidelines provided by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Standard Specifications for Highway Signs, Luminaries and Traffic Signals and the American Institute of Steel Construction Design Specifications. Using these specifications, the column design strength is normally determined using the effective length approach. This approach does not always accurately address all issues associated with frame stability, including the actual end conditions of the individual members, variations of the loads in the members, and the resulting sidesway buckling for truss type sign support structures. This paper provides insight into the problems with the simplified design approach for determining the effective lengths and discusses different approaches for overcoming these simplifications. A system buckling approach, also known as a rational buckling analysis, is used in this study to determine improved predictions for design strength of truss type sign support structures.
Under a severe environment of multiple hazards such as earthquakes and winds, the life-cycle performance of engineering structures may inevitably be deteriorated due to the fatigue effect caused by long-term exposure to wind loads, which would further increase the structural vulnerability to earthquakes. This paper presents a framework for evaluating the lifetime structural seismic performance under the effect of wind-induced fatigue considering different sources of uncertainties. The seismic behavior of a high-rise steel-concrete composite frame with buckling-restrained braces (FBRB) during its service life is systematically investigated using the proposed approach. Recorded field data for the wind hazard of Fuzhou, Fujian Province of China from Jan. 1, 1980 to Mar. 31, 2019 is collected, based on which the distribution of wind velocity is constructed by the Gumbel model after comparisons. The OpenSees platform is employed to establish the numerical model of the FBRB and conduct subsequent numerical computations. Allowed for the uncertainties caused by the wind generation and structural modeling, the final annual fatigue damage takes the average of 50 groups of simulations. The lifetime structural performance assessments, including static pushover analyses, nonlinear dynamic time history analyses and fragility analyses, are conducted on the time-dependent finite element (FE) models which are modified in lines with the material deterioration models. The results indicate that the structural performance tends to degrade over time under the effect of fatigue, while the influencing degree of fatigue varies with the duration time of fatigue process and seismic intensity. The impact of wind-induced fatigue on structural responses and fragilities are explicitly quantified and discussed in details.
This study presents buckling analysis of a simply supported sandwich plate with functionally graded porous layers. In the kinematic relation of the plate, a hyperbolic shear displacement model is used. The governing equations of the problem are derived by using the principle of virtual work. In the solution of the governing equations, the Navier procedure is implemented. In the porosity effect, four different porosity types are used for functionally graded sandwich layers. In the numerical examples, the effects of the porosity parameters, porosity types and geometry parameters on the critical buckling of the functionally graded sandwich plates are investigated.

Generally main girders and steel piers of temporary bridges form the steel rahmen structure. In this study, the rational stability design procedure for main members of temporary bridges is presented using 3D system buckling analysis and second-order elastic analysis. 2 types of temporary bridges, which are possible to be designed and fabricated in reality, are chosen and the buckling design for them is performed considering load combinations of dead and live loads, thermal load, and wind load. Effective buckling length of steel piers, effects of live loads on effective length of main members, transition of ~id buckling modes, and effects of second-order analysis are investigated through case study of 2 temporary bridges.
In the strong wind shutdown state, the blade position significantly affects the streaming behavior and stability performance of wind turbine towers. By selecting the 3M horizontal axis wind turbine independently developed by Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics as the research object, the CFD method was adopted to simulate the flow field of the tower-blade system at eight shutdown positions within a single rotation period of blades. The effectiveness of the simulation method was validated by comparing the simulation results with standard curves. In addition, the dynamic property, aerostatic response, buckling stability and ultimate bearing capacity of the wind turbine system at different shutdown positions were calculated by using the finite element method. On this basis, the influence regularity of blade shutdown position on the wind-induced response and stability performance of wind turbine systems was derived, with the most unfavorable working conditions of wind-induced buckling failure of this type of wind turbines concluded. The research results implied that within a rotation period of the wind turbine blade, when the blade completely overlaps the tower (Working condition 1), the aerodynamic performance of the system is the poorest while the aerostatic response is relatively small. Since the influence of the structure's geometrical nonlinearity on the system wind-induced response is small, the maximum displacement only has a discrepancy of 0.04. With the blade rotating clockwise, its wind-induced stability performance presents a variation tendency of first-increase-then-decrease. Under Working condition 3, the critical instability wind speed reaches its maximum value, while the critical instability wind speed under Working condition 6 is the smallest. At the same time, the coupling effect between tower and blade leads to a reverse effect which can significantly improve the ultimate bearing capacity of the system. With the reduction of the area of tower shielded by blades, this reverse effect becomes more obvious.

In this study, the buckling behaviors during the installation of a bucket foundation for an offshore wind turbine tower were investigated. The objective structure was modeled by using a commercial structural analysis program, and the buckling behavior of the model was estimated as Batdorf's parameter Z in the design code. The surrounding soil conditions and loading condition were applied to the verified analysis model. The effects of parameters such as the longitudinal stiffeners and driven depth were estimated for the buckling capacity. As a result, it was found that the longitudinal stiffeners could drastically increase the buckling capacity in a specific region. In addition, the buckling capacities increased linearly when considering the effect of the surrounding soil.
The use of nanotechnology materials and applications in the construction industry should be considered for enhancing material properties. However, the nonlinear buckling of an embedded straight concrete columns reinforced with silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) nanoparticles is investigated in the present study. The column is simulated mathematically with Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam models. Agglomeration effects and the characteristics of the equivalent composite are determined using Mori-Tanaka approach. The foundation around the column is simulated with spring and shear layer. The governing equations are derived using energy method and Hamilton's principal. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used in order to obtain the buckling load of structure. The influences of volume percent of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles, geometrical parameters and agglomeration on the buckling of column are investigated. Numerical results indicate that considering agglomeration effects leads to decrease in buckling load of structure.
The safety of structure was evaluated by taking into consideration the complex marine environmental conditions of the Lattice boom crane, which is widely used in offshore plants due to less influence by wind. CFX analysis was carried out to take into account the influence of wind speed, and the result was applied as a boundary condition to perform static analysis according to the luffing angles of $28^{\circ}$, $61^{\circ}$, and $80^{\circ}$ in the on board and off board, respectively. In addition, the Lattice Boom Crane is large slender structure, and the possibility of buckling is interpreted under three conditions where the biggest stress occurs. All conditions satisfied the safety requirements of the Classification Regulations. Also, as a result of the buckling analysis, the load less than the critical load was applied so buckling does not occur.
