Non-stationary extreme winds such as thunderstorm downbursts are responsible for many structural damages. This research presents a time domain approach for estimating along-wind load effects on tall buildings using multiple wind speed time history samples, which are simulated from evolutionary power spectra density (EPSD) functions of non-stationary wind fluctuations using the method developed by the authors' earlier research. The influence of transient wind loads on various responses including time-varying mean, root-mean-square value and peak factor is also studied. Furthermore, a simplified model is proposed to describe the non-stationary wind fluctuation as a uniformly modulated process with a modulation function following the time-varying mean. Finally, the probabilistic extreme response and peak factor are quantified based on the up-crossing theory of non-stationary process. As compared to the time domain response analysis using limited samples of wind record, usually one sample, the analysis using multiple samples presented in this study will provide more statistical information of responses. The time domain simulation also facilitates consideration of nonlinearities of structural and wind load characteristics over previous frequency domain analysis.
Wind energy, which is one of renewable energy, would be useful resources that can be applied to making energy recycling villages without using fossil fuels. This study analyzed energy potential on wind power considering weather condition in three rural villages and compared with energy consumption surveyed. A wind turbine system in the 5kW class can generate 26.1%, 73.9% and 39.5% of the yearly mean consumption of electric power per house in Makhyun, Boojang and Soso respectively. A 750kW wind turbine system can generate 1.7%, 30.3% and 22.1% of the total amount of electric power consumption in three study villages respectively. Wind power energy density was too low in Makhyun and Soso, so it is determined that the application of wind turbine system is almost impossible. Wind energy potential was generally low in Boojang either, but it is evaluated that there is a little possibility of wind power generation relatively. For practical application of renewable energy to rural green-village planning, assessment of energy potential for the local area should be preceded.

A wind energy assessment is an integrated analysis of the potential of wind energy resources of a particular area. In this work, the wind energy potentials for Mauritius have been assessed using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The approach employed in this work aims to enhance the assessment of wind energy potentials for the siting of large-scale wind farms in the island. Validation of the model is done by comparing simulated wind speed data to experimental ones measured at specific locations over the island. The local wind velocity resulting from the CFD simulations are used to compute the weighted-sum power density including annual directional inflow variations determined by wind roses. The model is used to generate contour maps of velocity and power, for Mauritius at a resolution of 500 m.
To increase the efficiency of a wind energy conversion system (WECS), the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is usually employed. This paper proposes an optimal MPPT algorithm which tracks a sudden wind speed change condition fast. The proposed method can be implemented without the prior information on the wind turbine parameters, generator parameters, air density or wind speed. By investigating the directions of changes of the mechanical output power in wind turbine and rotor speed of the generator, the proposed MPPT algorithm is able to determine an optimal speed to achieve the maximum power point. Then, this optimal speed is set to the reference of the speed control loop. As a result, the proposed MPPT algorithm forces the system to operate at the maximum power point by using a three-phase converter. The simulation results based on the PSIM are given to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Saemankeum is well known for its high speed wind, and it is known that the blueprint of a future city around Saemankeum, including new industrial complex, has been planned. As a result, large-scale offshore wind farm, on the basis of the measurement of wind resource for a long time, can be considered, so that generated electricity can be used to meet the energy demand near the wind farm. Wind speed in Kokunsando of Saemankeum is measured and analyzed with its statistical distribution and wind directions. The probability of wind power resource over Kokunsando of Saemangeum is reviewed with the measured data in one island of Kokunsando. According to measured data, the shape and scale factor of Weibull distribution of wind speed are obtained, and then power density is analyzed as well. Through this study, it is clear that the Saemangeum area has a fluent and abundant wind power source to develop the wind farm in Korea.
New concept of wind energy conversion system is proposed to increase the energy density at a given working space. The quality of wind for wind power generation is depend on its direction and speed. However, the quality is not good on land because wind direction is changeable all the time and the speed as well. The most popularly operated wind turbine system is an axial-flow free turbine. But its conversion efficiency is less than 30% and even less than 20% considering the operating time. In this research, a cross-flow type wind turbine system is proposed with a convergent-divergent duct system to accelerate the low speed wind at the inlet of the wind turbine. Inlet guide vane is also introduced to the wind turbine system to have continuous power generation under the change of wind direction. In here, the availability of wind energy generation is evaluated with the change of the size of the inlet guide vane and the optimum geometry of the turbine impeller blade was found for the innovative wind power generation system.
The recorded thunderstorm winds at a point contain tri-directional components. The probabilistic characteristics of such recorded winds in terms of instantaneous mean wind speed and direction, and the probability distribution and the time-frequency dependent crossed and non-crossed power spectral density functions for the high-frequency fluctuating wind components are unclear. In the present study, we analyze the recorded tri-directional thunderstorm wind components by separating the recorded winds in terms of low-frequency time-varying mean wind speed and high-frequency fluctuating wind components in the alongwind direction and two orthogonal crosswind directions. We determine the time-varying mean wind speed and direction defined by azimuth and elevation angles, and analyze the spectra of high-frequency wind components in three orthogonal directions using continuous wavelet transforms. Additionally, we evaluate the coherence between each pair of fluctuating winds. Based on the analysis results, we develop empirical spectral models and lagged coherence models for the tri-directional fluctuating wind components, and we indicate that the fluctuating wind components can be treated as Gaussian. We show how they can be used to generate time histories of the tri-directional thunderstorm winds.
A new method is proposed in this study for estimating the damping ratio of a super tall building under strong wind loads with short-time measured acceleration signals. This method incorporates two main steps. Firstly, the power spectral density of wind-induced acceleration response is obtained by the wavelet transform, then the dynamic characteristics including the natural frequency and damping ratio for the first vibration mode are estimated by a nonlinear regression analysis on the power spectral density. A numerical simulation illustrated that the damping ratios identified by the wavelet spectrum are superior in precision and stability to those values obtained from Welch's periodogram spectrum. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method, wind-induced acceleration responses of the Guangzhou West Tower (GZWT) measured in the field during Typhoon Usagi, which affected this building on September 22, 2013, were used. The damping ratios identified varied from 0.38% to 0.61% in direction 1 and from 0.22% to 0.59% in direction 2. This information is expected to be of considerable interest and practical use for engineers and researchers involved in the wind-resistant design of super-tall buildings.
The diameter of the rotor of 2MW wind turbine is being developed by a number of companies with more than 80m, reliability and economic efficiency of the wind power generator has been improved. The need for large-scale wind turbine with excellent economy has been attracting attention because the new orders and the location of the wind turbine market has reached a limit. Technology development for enlargement of wind turbine is possible not only the improvement of energy efficiency but also reduce the construction costs per unit capacity. However, mechanical gearboxes used in wind generators have problems of wear, damage, need for lubrication oil and maintenance. Therefore, we want to configure the gearbox of a large-scale wind turbine using a magnetic gear in order to solve these problems of mechanical gearbox.
In order to clarify the characteristics of power performance and uncertainty of a wind turbine, an investigation was performed in Hangyeong wind farm, Jeju island, Korea. Data were collected for 12 months from Feb. 2, 2008 to Jan. 1, 2009. This study was conducted on the base of the International standard, and observed the methods of mesurement and evaluation form IEC 61400-12. As a result, power performance curve was calculated by measured data and compared with the sixth unit of VESTAS V90-3.0MW in Hangyeong wind farms. In consequence of this paper, uncertainty was estimated from 7% to 14% on the range of the average wind speed from 4m/s to 11m/s.
