  • The objective of this study was to determine the optimal angle of a wind louver that would induce the optimal wind speed for indoor. Being controlled to have an optimized angle depending on the direction from which wind is blowing and the wind speed, the wind louver to be installed on the building envelop comes to create indoor comfort through a constant wind speed using the function that reduces the indoor wind speed by changing the angle when the wind speed is not lower than a certain level and makes wind flow into the room to the maximum when the wind direction is adverse to catching the wind or the wind speed is not higher than a certain level. To determine the optimal wind louver angle, a core-centered office building with cross-ventilation problems in the climate of Seoul, Korea, which experiences four distinct seasons, was considered for analysis in this study. A module 1 office space model was used for the CFD simulation to analyze the average indoor wind speed with respect to the outdoor wind speed (varied between 1 and 8 m/s), the wind louver angle, and the outdoor wind direction (varied between $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ in steps of $10^{\circ}$).

  • An adjustable, louver-type wind barrier was introduced in this study for improving the running safety and ride comfort of train on the bridge under the undesirable wind environment. The aerodynamic characteristics of both train and bridge due to this novel wind barrier was systematically investigated based on the wind tunnel tests. It is suggested that rotation angles of the adjustable blade of the louver-type wind barrier should be controlled within $90^{\circ}$ to achieve an effective solution in terms of the overall aerodynamic performance of the train. Compared to the traditional grid-type wind barrier, the louver-type wind barrier generally presents better aerodynamic performance. Specifically, the larger decrease of the lift force and overturn moment of the train and the smaller increase of the drag force and torsional moment of the bridge resulting from the louver-type wind barrier were highlighted. Finally, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique was applied to explore the underlying mechanism of aerodynamic control using the proposed wind barrier.

  • In this paper, we researched a parametric study in flow control system using louver with numerical method. Generally, for the large fans with constant rotational speed, the louver can be used to control the flow rate. The opening and closing of louver can make a some change of flow properties generated by a large fan. To develope the relation between the opening angle of louver and flow rate(or pressure difference), we simulated the flow past the modelled louver installed in a virtual wind tunnel. For the various angles, the mean flow properties are investigated and parameterized with a given boundary condition. The research result can be used directly to design the flow control system of large constant-speed fans, which are often applied to petrolic refinery system.

  • In this paper, the individual reentering rate of the cooling towers installed on a building roof is investigated considering the wind direction and louver wall installation. As the western wind with 5 m/s flows and the louver wall is not installed around the roof. the reentering rate of the cooling towers is predicted about 20%. However the reentering rate is simulated about 5% when the louver wall is installed around the roof. As the southern wind with 5 m/s flows and the louver wall is not installed, the reentering rate of the cooling tower is predicted about 30%.On the contrary, the reentering rate is simulated about 15% when the louver is installed. As a result, if there is no louver wall installed around the roof, the falloff of the cooling capacity would be serious by the reentering of the discharge air. The installation of the louver wall is strongly recommended to prevent the discharge air reentering.

  • When heat generated inside a large factory building is not discharged due to a stagnant flow, the working environment of workers becomes worse and the cooling of high-temperature products such as hot-rolling coils is delayed. To investigate the natural ventilation inside a large factory building, experimental studies were carried out using wind-tunnel tests. The scale-down factory building models were placed in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and the mean and fluctuating velocity fields were measured using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. For the prototype factory model, the outdoor air is only entrained into the factory building through the one-third open windward wall, and stagnant flow is formed in the rear part of the target area. In order to improve the indoor ventilation environment of the factory building, three different louver-type ventilators were attached at the upper one-third open windward wall of the factory model. Among the three louver ventilators tested in this study, the ventilator model #3 with the outer louver (${\theta}_o$ = 90$^{\circ}$) and the inner louver (${\theta}_i$ = -70$^{\circ}$) was found to improve the natural ventilation inside the factory building model effectively. The flow rate of the entrained air was increased with aligning the outer louver blades with the oncoming wind and guiding the entrained air down to the ground surface with elongated inner louver blades.

  • In this study, the numerical process for analyzing the automotive louver fin heat exchanger was developed with a 3D microscopic and semi-microscopic analysis. In the microscopic analysis, the simulation with the detailed meshes was performed for obtaining the characteristics of the heat exchanger. From this simulation, the numerical correlations of the heat transfer and flow friction were obtained. In the semi-microscopic analysis, the Semi-microscopic Heat Exchanger (SHE) method, which is characterized by a conjugate heat transfer and porous media analysis was used with the numerical correlation from the microscopic analysis. This analysis predicted the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the louver fin heat exchanger in the wind tunnel and vehicle. In the design of the louver fin heat exchanger, this numerical process can predict the performance and characteristic of the louver fin heat exchanger.

  • Recently, there are widely needs of small scale electrostatic precipitator(ESP) in machine shop and other factories. Since the space of such factories is limited, the improvement of collection efficiency is predominant subject. In this study, we examine the influence of distribution of wind velocity and oil mist concentration inside the ESP in order to improve the performance of the ESP. The distribution of wind velocity and mist concentration is measured respectively in a cross-sectional plane of the ESP. The former is controlled by using a louver which is placed in front of an ionizer and the latter is controlled by lengthening the pipe of entrance of the ESP in order to have plenty of time that mist is dispersed evenly. It is shown that the uniformity of distribution of wind velocity and mist concentration inside the ESP can be getting by adopting a louver with proper shape and lengthening the pipe of entrance and is also contributed to collection efficiency considerably.

  • Vents at outer walls of a large factory building are very important for natural ventilation. But, if a full-open vent is used, rain comes through the vents. We tried to utilize the natural ventilation effectively using a louver. A 1/120 scale-down building model was placed inside an atmospheric boundary layer simulated in a wind tunnel test section. The effect of louver angle on the ventilation flow inside the factory building was investigated experimentally. Instantaneous velocity fields inside the building model were measured using a 2-frame PIV system with varying the louver angles ($\theta=20^{\circ},\;40^{\circ},\;60^{\circ}$). For the case of $\theta=60^{\circ}$, as the incoming flow into the factory building increases, the inside velocity distribution becomes uniformly.

  • A large amount of wear dust generated during train operation is a major dust source in urban railway tunnels. To check possibility of a louver dust collector for the removal of dust in the railway tunnel, five louver dust collector models were designed and their performance was tested in a wind tunnel. JIS Z 8901 Class 8 dust was used as a test dust. Pressure drop and particle collection efficiency were evaluated with the face velocity ranging from 1 m/s to 4 m/s. At this low velocity range, particle collection efficiency of the louver dust collector was found to be insensitive to air velocity and design parameters. Pressure drop was under 40 Pa, and $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ collection efficiencies were approximately 50% and 30%, respectively.
