  • Wind turbine generators were designed on general regulations of wind condition. At real situations, it could be different from the design conditions. There are many control methods and definitions of transient region, because an efficient wind turbine generator control logic is the important matter in generator performance and annual energy production at real conditions. In this document, the power generation sensitivity for wind speed and turbulence intensities was defined to know the sensitive transient region. Wind conditions are applied for the ranges of 7~10m/s mean wind speed and 14~20% turbulence intensity. The sensibility of HR-D86 wind generator was increased in transient region(8~10m/s) on power curve diagram through a torque control to a pitch control. And then GH-bladed simulations was performed for performance analysis of the torque mode switching in transient region on 2MW direct drive wind generator(HR-D86) which is designed IEC class II for onshore. Through the sensitivity and performance analysis, the sensitivity for real wind condition could be the performance index for an wind generator. And the torque mode switching in transient region can increase the mean power generation on HR-D86 wind turbine generator.

  • In the present work, numerical analyses of broadcasting LED light with ion wind generator have been carried out for enhancement of cooling performance. Ion wind generator is produced and experimented before analysis. With the use of result of experiments, broadcasting LED light model is computed. Ion wind velocity into LED light is varied with 0~3 m/s. Based on the numerical results, the area of duct-type ion wind generator was designed to reduce the volume flow rate of ion wind. The modified inlet geometry shows sufficient cooling capability. And, through modified ion wind generator, the volume flow rate of ion wind has been largely reduced.

  • In this paper, after an acceleration typed ion wind generator which could format strong electric field in air was manufactured and installed, the effects of the electrode configuration and distance of acceleration type ion wind generator with triangle structure on the ion wind generation characteristics were investigated. As a result, the ion wind generator with curvature multipoint electrode could generate higher ion wind velocity and ion wind generation yield than others with multipoint electrode, curvature line electrode, line electrode structure. The ion wind generator with curvature multipoint electrode showed a peak ion wind velocity of 1.33[m/s] at 19.0[kV] and a ion wind generation yield of 0.12[m/Ws] at 15.0[kV].

  • As the space of the wind power generator stator end is limited, it is difficult for us to place the inner evaporative cooling system in it. We use the non-overlapping concentrated windings scheme to solve the placing and cooling problem. The characteristic of a 5MW direct-driven permanent magnet generator with non-overlapping concentrated windings were analyzed under no-load, rating-load and short-circuit by (Finite Element Method) FEM for verification of design. We studied the connection methods of the stator windings and designed the end connection member. The heat dissipation of the stator end was simulated by FEM, the result showed that the end cooling could satisfy the wind generator operation needs. These results show that the direct-driven permanent magnet wind power generators with non-overlapping concentrated windings and inner evaporative cooling system can solve the cooling problem of wind power generator, and obtain good performance at the same time.

  • In this paper, a novel control algorithm to minimize the power loss of the induction generator for wind power generation system is presented. The proposed method is based on the flux level reduction, where the flux level is computed from the machine model for the optimum d-axis current of the generator. For the vector-controlled induction generator, the d-axis current controls the excitation level in order to minimize the generator loss while the q-axis current controls the generator torque, by which the speed of the induction generator is controlled according to the variation of the wind speed in order to produce the maximum output power. Wind turbine simulator has been implemented in laboratory to validate the theoretical development. The experimental results show that the loss minimization process is more effective at low wind speed and that the percent of power loss saving can approach to 25%. Experimental results are shown to verify the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper a new dc-link type wind turbine generator system using a shaft generator system, which is widely used for power sources in a ship, is proposed. The basic configuration of the proposed wind turbine generating system is first explained. And the equations expressing the system are derived. Then the steady-state characteristics of the generating system are discussed. We use an experimental system that can simulate the characteristics of a wind turbine in this study, because it is hard to operate an actual wind turbine in a laboratory. In addition, the transient responses of this system are investigated when the velocity of the wind is changed. It is shown that experimental results were very close to the simulated ones, supporting the usefulness of the theory.

  • A wind farm consists of many wind generator(WG)s therefore, it is generally a complex power system. A wind farm as a distributed generation(DG) affects utility power system. If a conventional protection schemes are applied, it is difficult to detect faults correctly and the schemes can't provide proper coordination in some cases. This paper presents a protection algorithm for a wind farm which consists of a looped collection circuit. Because the proposed algorithm can distinguish between an internal fault and an external fault in a wind farm, The proposed algorithm can disconnect the faulted section in a wind farm. This algorithm is based on an overcurrent protection technique with the change of the ratio of the output current of a generator to the current of the looped line connected to each generator to collect the each generator's power. In addition, operating time of the algorithm is shortened by using the voltage drop at a generator collection point. The performance of the proposed algorithm was verified under various fault conditions using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations.

  • The purpose of this paper is to gain a greater understanding of the performance of practical wind turbine generating systems with differing output power controllers and controlling means for wind turbine speed. Subjected wind turbines, both equipped with an asynchronous power generator, are located at two sites and are defined as wind turbine A and wind turbine B in this study, respectively. Their performance differences are examined by measuring wind speed and electric parameters. The study suggests that both wind turbines have a clear linkage between current and output power fluctuations. Comparison of the fluctuations to wind speed fluctuation, although they are triggered primarily by wind speed fluctuation, clearly indicates the specific behaviors inherent to the respective turbine control mechanisms.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator for a small-scale wind energy conversion system. An analytical model of a small-scale grid-connected wind energy conversion system is presented, and the effects of generator design parameters on the payback period of the system are investigated. An optimization procedure based on genetic algorithm method is then employed to optimize four design parameters of the generator for use in a region with relatively low wind-speed. The aim of optimization is minimizing the payback period of the initial investment on wind energy conversion systems for residential applications. This makes the use of these systems more economical and appealing. Finite element method is employed to evaluate the performance of the optimized generator. The results obtained from finite element analysis are close to those achieved by analytical model.
