  • The analytical studies included nonlinear finite element analysis of split-tee connection details subjected to axial load and lateral load. A three-dimensional model of the connections between CFT columns and H-beams has been developed. Both initial geometrical imperfections and residual stresses are taken into consideration. A geometrically nonlinear load-displacement analysis of the structure containing the imperfection is then performed, using the Riks method. Analytical results are compared with existing experimental results. Extensive parametric analyses are carried out to investigate the relation of the connections between CFT columns and H-beam to various parameters such as the axial load, column width-thickness ratio, and split-tee thickness.

  • A major difference between high-strength reinforcing steel and conventional steel in concrete is that the service-load steel stress is expected to be greater. Consequently, the service-load steel strains are greater affecting cracking behavior. A parametric study investigating crack widths and patterns in reinforced concrete prisms is presented in order to establish limits to the service-load steel stress and strain. Additionally, based on the results of available flexural tests, crack widths at service load levels were evaluated and found to be within presently accepted limits for highway bridge structures, and were predictable using current AASHTO provisions. A limitation on service-level stresses of $f_s{\leq}414$ MPa (60 ksi) is nonetheless recommended.

  • Support Vector Machine(SVM), of which the foundations have been developed by Vapnik (1995), is gaining popularity thanks to many attractive features and promising empirical performance. In this paper, we propose a new short-term load forecasting technique based on SVM. We discuss the input vector selection of SVM for load forecasting and analyze the prediction performance for various SVM parameters such as kernel function, cost coefficient C, and $\varepsilon$ (the width of 8 $\varepsilon-tube$). The computer simulation shows that the prediction performance of the proposed method is superior to that of the conventional neural networks.

  • This paper presents a new circuit topology and its digital control scheme for a half-bridge resonant inverter. As the proposed half-bridge inverter can be operated in load-freewheeling modes, the pulse-width modulation (PWM) method can be used for the output power control. The proposed half-bridge inverter is based on the resonant frequency-tracking algorithm with the goal of maintaining the unity of the output displacement factor of the load impedance even in varying conditions. In this paper, the operation principle, electrical characteristics, and detailed digital control scheme of the proposed half-bridge resonant inverter are described. The experimental results of the prototype experimental setup to verify the validity of the proposed half-bridge inverter are presented and discussed.

  • This paper presents experimental results of rock-concrete bi-material discs under cyclically diametrical compression. It was found that both specimens under cyclical and static loading failed in three typical modes: shear crack, tensile crack and a combined mode of shear and wing crack. The failure modes transited gradually from the shear crack to the tensile one by increasing the interface angle between the interface and the loading direction. The cycle number and peak load increased by increasing the interface angle. The number of cycles and peak load increased with the interface groove depth and groove width, however, decreased with increase in interface groove spacing. The concrete strength can contribute more to the cycle number and peak load for specimens with a higher interface angle. Compared with the discs under static loading, the cyclically loaded discs had a lower peak load but a larger deformation. Finally, the effects of interface angle, interface asperity and concrete strength on the fatigue strength were also discussed.

  • Three kinds of metallic sandwich panels with quasi-Kagome truss cores have been analyzed on their mechanical behaviors subjected to bending load. According to the results of previous work on the optimal design, they were designed to have similarly high strength per weight with the identical overall sizes, i.e., the total length, the width, the core height. Differences were in the face sheet thickness and/or the thickness of the metal sheet from which the core was fabricated through expanding and bending processes. Under the bending load, they performed well as designed, as far as the maximum load is concerned. However, after the maximum load, the load-displacement curves were different each other depending on the slenderness ratio of the truss elements composing the quasi-Kagome truss cores and the face sheet thickness. Namely, the slenderness ratio and the face sheet thickness governed stability of the elastic and plastic buckling. Therefore, if energy absorption characteristics or structural stability as well as the maximum load capacity are to be achieved, the sandwich panel with thick truss members and thick face sheet should be selected.

  • In order to investigate mechanical properties in the core area of Square Hollow Section(SHS) column connection with external stiffening ring, four specimens were tested under the static tension load. The failure modes, load-displacement curves and strain distribution were analyzed to study the mechanical properties and the load transfer mechanism of the core area of connections. The connections behave good ductility and load-bearing capacity under the static tension load. Parametric analysis was also conducted, in which the thickness of steel tube, extended width and thickness of the stiffening ring were considered as the parameters to investigate the effects on mechanical properties of the connections. Based on the experimental results, an analytical method for the bearing capacity of connection with external stiffening ring under the static tension load was proposed. The theoretical results and the experimental results are in good agreement, which indicates that the theoretical calculation method of the bearing capacity is advisable.

  • This paper presents a design of a high-efficiency CMOS DC-DC boost converter using a current-sensing feedback method. High-precision current-sensing circuity is incorporated in order to sense the current flowing in the inductor, which determines the switching scheme of the pulse-width modulation. The external components or large chip area for the frequency compensation can be avoided while maintaining the stable operations of the converter. Various input/output voltage levels can be available through the external resistor strings. The designed DC-DC converter is fabricated in a 0.18-um CMOS technology with a thick-gate oxide option. The converter shows the maximum efficiency over 90% for the output voltage of 3.3V and load current larger than 200mA. The load regulation is 1.15% for the load current change of 100mA.

  • Today there is a growing range of applications for Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFT) member because of its superior performance. Ductility estimation test of concrete-filled seismic resistant steel tubular columns, subjected to axial and cyclic lateral load, was carried out in this study. Seismic resistant steel tubes are manufactured using SN400B plates by a two-seam welding at center of the column width for cold press-formed shape plates of two pieces. A total of eight specimens were manufactured and tested with the parameters of width-thickness ratio of steel tubular column, axial load ratio, and loading conditions to act axial and cyclic lateral load two dynamic actuators were used. From test results, flexural strength, deformation capacity, energy dissipation capacity, and ductility behavior of columns were analyzed.

  • A pre-load of bracing was imposed to prevent the horizontal displacement on the strut of the braced wall adjacent to the building during the ground excavation. For this purpose, large scale model tests were conducted, without and with pre-load on braced wall. Adjacent building load was also imposed in different locations, that were 0 m, 1D, 2D on ground surface. In this study, model tests in 1:10 scale were performed in real construction sequences, and adjacent building was 12 m in width and the size of model test pit was 2 m in width, 6 m in height, and 4 m in length. As a result, it was found that the stability of the existing building adjacent to the braced wall within Rankine's active zone could be greatly enhanced when the horizontal displacement of the braced wall was reduced by applying a pre-load. which was larger than the designated axial force on the strut of the braced wall.
