  • Seed size traits are controlled by multiple genes in crops and determine grain yield, quality and appearance. However, the molecular mechanisms controlling the size of plant seeds remain unclear. We performed functional analysis of BrPATL4 encoding Sec14-like protein to determine the genetic architecture of seed size, shape and their association analyses. We used 60 $T_3$ transgenic rice lines to evaluate seed length, seed width and seed height as seed size traits, and the ratios of these values as seed shape traits. Pleiotropic effects on general architecture included small seed size, erect panicles, decreased grain weight, reduced plant height and increased sterility, which are common to other mutants deficient in gibberellic acid (GA) biosynthesis. To test whether BrPATL4 overexpression is deleterious for GA signal transduction, we compared the relative expression of GA related gene and the growth rate of second leaf sheath supplied with exogenous $GA_3$. Overexpression of BrPATL4 did not affect GA biosynthesis or signaling pathway, with the same response shown under GA treatment compared to the wild type. However, the causal genes for the small seed phenotype (D1, SRS1, and SRS5) and the erection of panicles showed significantly decreased levels in mRNA accumulation compared to the wild type. These results suggest that the overexpression of BrPATL4 can control seed size through the suppression of those genes related to seed size regulation. Although the molecular function of BrPATL4 is not clear for small seed and erect panicles of BrPALT4 overexpression line, this study provides some clues about the genetic engineering of rice seed architecture.

  • P-type ($Bi_{0.5}Sb_{1.5}Te_3$) and n-type ($Bi_2Te_{2.4} Se_{0.6}$) thermoelectric thin film were deposited on glass and Teflon substrates by the flash evaporation technique. The changes in thermoelectric properties, such as Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, carrier concentration, carrier mobility, thermal conductivity, and figure of merit, were investigated as a function of film thickness and annealing condition. Figures of merit of the thin films annealed at 473 K for 1 hour were improved to be $1.3{\times}10^{-3}K^{-1}$ for p-type and $0.3{\times}10^{-3}K^{-1}$ for n-type, and they were almost independent of film thickness. Temperature sensors were fabricated from the thin films having the above mentioned properties. And thermo-emf, sensitivity, and time constant of the sensors were measured to evaluate their characteristics for temperature sensors. Thin film sensors deposited on Teflon substrates showed better performance than those on glass substrates, and their sensitivity and time constant were 2.91 V/W and 28.2 sec respectively for the sensor of leg width 1 mm$\times$length 16 mm.

  • Guided waves can be used for the inspection of long range pipelines. Surface corrosion is often found as a major defect type in pipelines. The reciprocity relation is a well-established theorem by which one can simplify complicated mathematical expressions. The approach has been already applied to plate and half-space structures to obtain the closed-form solutions of scattered amplitude. However, results for the case of cylindrical structures have not been reported yet. In this paper, the scattering of torsional waves, which is widely used in commercial applications, is explored by the reciprocity theorem approach. Obtaining closed-form solutions of the amplitudes of propagating waves is much simplified by using the reciprocal relation. The scattered amplitudes for elliptical and rectangular defect shapes are calculated with respect to defect depth and width, at frequencies between 0 and 500 kHz. The amplitude shows the periodic result as a function of frequency. The derived closed-form solutions can play a significant role in quantitative signal interpretation.

  • A lot of varIOUS studies are taking advantage of annular masks or various pupil filters to design optical systems such as a digital versatile disc (DVD) pick up head and precise scanning microscopy that have the superresolution beyond the diffraction limit. We considered both annular mask and pupil filter for the superresolution system. Since image quality is a function of annular width, position and modulation amount, we computel'lzed the optimized condition for the phase modulation and mvestigated the variation of lhe center peak: intensity for the phase modulated system From tills result, we were able to detenrune the best conditions for the annular apodizer, wluch give the maximum value of the center peak intensity_ We made especially sure that the phase modulated system have an excellent compensation for spherical aberration as it lllcreases. eases.

  • Background Although the conventional direct brow lift operation provides a simple means of managing lateral brow ptosis, the scars produced have been unacceptable. However, using the modifications proposed here, scarring showed remarkable improvement. This article reviews our experiences with the presented technique, mainly with respect to postoperative scarring. Methods Measured amounts of supra-eyebrow skin and subcutaneous fat were excised en bloc in the conventional manner under 'hyper-hydrated' local infiltration anesthesia. The lower flap and the edge of the upper flap were undermined above the muscular plane, and the orbicularis oculi muscle was directly suture-plicated and suspended upward to the distal frontalis muscle. Skin closure was performed in a basic plastic surgical manner. Results From April 2007 to April 2012, a consecutive series of 60 patients underwent surgery using the above method. The average width of the excised skin was 8 mm (range, 5-15 mm) at the apex of the eyebrow. Preoperative complaints were resolved without occurrence of significant complications. The surgical scars showed remarkable improvement and were negligible in the majority of the cases. Conclusions The direct brow lift operation combined with plication/suspension of the superior and lateral portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle provides a simple, safe, and predictable means of correcting lateral brow ptosis. The scars were acceptable to all of the patients. For proper management of the frontalis tone, upper blepharoplasty and/or repair of eyelid levator function must be considered in addition to brow lift procedures.

  • We have investigated the effect of the experimental variables such as temperature and pressure on conformality of Co films deposited over high aspect ratio trenches using $Co_2(CO)_8$ as a precursor. The results show that the conformality of Co films is a strong function of temperature and process pressure. Lowering the pressure and temperature significantly improves the conformality. As the pressure decreases from 0.6 Torr to 0.2 Torr at $50^{\circ}C$, the bottom coverage of Co films over $0.2{\mu}m$ width trenches with an aspect ratio of 13 to 1 significantly increases to 85%. However, further increasing the temperature from 50 to $60^{\circ}C$ at the pressure of 0.2 Torr degrades the bottom coverage to 14%. In contrast, the extremely low pressure of 0.03 Torr allows the excellent conformal deposition of Co films up to $70^{\circ}C$. This can be attributed to the suppression of homogeneous reaction in the gas phase, which can create the intermediate products with high sticking coefficient. In addition, the Co films deposited at $50^{\circ}C$ show the low resistivity with negligible contamination. As a result, the newly developed Co process using MOCVD can be implemented into the next generation devices with complex shapes.

  • Joint paths of master and branch pipes are induced mathematically for many kinds of joint patterns between both pipes in 3-axis pipe profile-cutting machines. By compensating them with a kerf width, the real cutting paths are determined, and their CL-data are generated, and the tool paths generated by CL-data are verified by a ghost function. A bevelling of welds is implemented through tilting a cutting torch in the $\beta$-axis direction for 8 sections in the chuck rotation of $\alpha$-axis. A PLC controls simultaneously position and velocity in a real time for $\alpha$, X, $\beta$-axis by loading CL-data generated. We developed the PLC-controlled 3-axis pipe profile-cutting system which can cut a master or branch pipe along the cutting path and simultaneously do a bevelling process.

  • Maintainability of highways is an important problem that is considered in the planning steps of a highway development process. A number of asset management systems have been developed to precisely predict maintenance and pavement expenditures for better decision making, But these systems are not helpful in reducing maintenance costs. Optimization of some highway design characteristics in the planning phases may reduce maintenance costs over the life cycle of highway. The formulations for initial and maintenance costs have been developed based on which design variables can be chosen to minimize these costs, focusing on the sideslope in cut and fill sections. Maintenance cost has been represented as a function of sideslope, width of highway cross section, and annual average daily traffic. A real geographic database of between Chung joo and Sang joo city in Choong buk was used and it is presented to investigate the sensitivities of maintenance cost and soil characteristics in selecting alignments. In this study, we present that maintenance cost and soil characteristics are important considerations in alignment optimization.

  • The tightness of windows have devoted to the improvement of thermal insulation and energy saving in buildings. But it is known that this tightness causes some side effects such as low ventilation, low capacity to humidity and temperature control and these are not profitable for inhabitants. To act on these side effects, Korean traditional windows which are composed of Han-Ji(Koreand traditional paper) and Chang-Sal(Korean traditional wooden frame) have been studied to get a reasonable solutions for these problems. In this study, to compare the thermal and humidity control performance of current window(12 mm pair) and Korean traditional windows, frames which are made of existing window and Korean traditional windows are adapted to scale model house and then humidity and temperature of in and out of scale model house are measured and analysed. The results of this study are followings ; 1) When Korean traditional window charges 20cm(1/8 of total window area) from total window area, Han-Ji window has higher thermal insulation than that of existing window in daytime. There is the most big thermal difference when double faced with double-ply Han-Ji window is placed to mock-up house. In night-time, the temperature difference is very small so this means that Korean traditional window is good to cover direct sunlight in daytime and reduce the temperature of balcony. One faced with one-ply han-Ji window has the best humidity penetration performance among three type of Korean traditional windows. 2) When Korean window area enlarged to 40cm(1/4 of total window area), the function of 40cm width Han-Ji window is higher than that of 20cm's. This means that enlargement of Han-Ji window cover direct sunlight more and is more efficient in humidity penetration.

  • Teeth mobility is an important part of a periodontal examination, because it represents a function of the persisting height of the alveolar bone and the width of the periodontal ligament. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical difference in teeth mobility after treatment with the modified Widman flap and the undisplaced flap in humans. Twenty males with moderate periodontal disease were selected. The severity of periodontal disease was evaluated with sulcular bleeding index, pocket depth and attachment level and tooth mobility was measured with Periotest(Siemens Co., Germany) at the initial examination, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks following the modified Widman flap and the undisplaced flap operation using the split-mouth technique. The relation of mobility to clinical parameters was statistically analyzed by multiple regression and the change of teeth mobility according to healing process by independent t-test using SPSS program. The results were as follows: 1. There was a strong relationship between the Periotest value(PTV) and attachment level. 2. The change of teeth mobility in both flap procedures was increased significantly at 1 week post-op. and was decreased to preoperative level at 4 weeks post-op, in modified Widman flap and at 6 weeks post-op. in undisplaced flap. 3. The change of teeth mobility in premolar teeth group in undisplaced flap compared to modified Widman flap was generally increased but these changes were not statistically significant. The changes of teeth mobility in molar teeth group in undisplaced flap was increased significantly at 2 weeks post-op.. 4. The change of teeth mobility following undisplaced flap was increased significantly compared to that of modified Widman flap at 2 weeks post-op.
