  • The purpose of this study was to analyze kinematic quantitative factors required of a forehand counter drive in table tennis through 3-D analysis. Four national table tennis players participated in this study. The mean of elapsed time for total drive motion was $1.009{\pm}0.23\;s$. At the phase of impact B1 was the fastest as 0.075 s. This may affect efficiency in the initial velocity and spin of the ball by making a powerful counter drive. The pattern of center of mass showed that it moved back and returned to where it was then moved forward. At the back swing, lower stance made wide base of support and a stronger and safer stance. It may help increasing the ball spin. Angle of the elbow was extended up to $110.75{\pm}1.25^{\circ}$ at the back swing and the angle decreased by $93.75{\pm}3.51^{\circ}$ at impact. Decreased rotation range of swinging arm increased linear velocity of racket-head and impulse on the ball. Eventually it led more spin to the ball and maximized the ball speed. Angle of knee joint decreased from ready position to back swing, then increased from the moment of the impact and decreased at the follow thorough. The velocity of racket-head was the fastest at impact of phase 2. Horizontal velocity was $7796.5{\pm}362\;mm/s$ and vertical velocity was $4589.4{\pm}298.4\;mm/s$ at the moment. It may help increase the speed and spin of the ball in a moment. The means of each ground reaction force result showed maximum at the back swing(E2) except A2. Vertical ground reaction force means suggest that all males and females showed maximum vertical power(E2), The maximum power of means was $499.7{\pm}38.8\;N$ for male players and $519.5{\pm}136.7\;N$ for female players.

  • Purposes: Wide scars occurring on the lower face and neck are a source of both functional and esthetic problems. Consequently, we can use skin grafts, pedicled flaps, free flaps, and tissue expansion for the reconstruction of this area. Compared with other reconstruction techniques, tissue expansion is advantageous in that it enables the maintenance of a color and texture similar to that of the adjacent tissue. However, the conventional method of tissue expansion has been reported to lead to an unnatural cervicomental angle and to the deformity of adjacent structures. We have therefore made efforts to prevent these problems through the use of several operative procedures. Methods: Forty-one patients with lower facial and cervical scars underwent tissue expansion. The tissue expansion was performed using a rectangular-shaped Nagosil$^{(R)}$ tissue expansion device. On insertion of the tissue expander, the intermediate area of superficial fat layer was dissected and then the tissue expander was inserted to make a flap that was as thin as possible. In advancement of the flap, a capsule-formed by the tissue expander-was used for the interrupted fixed suture of the flap to the fascia of the platysma muscle of the neck. This procedure was performed multiple times and also performed between the flap and the periosteum of the mandible, such that the tension was removed during the suture of the flap margin. Finally, the patients were fitted with a Jobst$^{(R)}$ facial garment in order to stabilize the operation site at least twelve months. Results: The most prevalent location of the scar was the cheek (15 cases), followed by the chin in 14 cases and the neck in 12 cases. The mean size of scar was $55.7{\pm}39.4cm^2$. Conclusions: Using our procedures, we have experienced no significant deformities and have also achieved a more natural cervicomental angle in the patients.

  • Cellulose nitrate (CN) composite membranes, containing cobalt porphyrin (CoP) complexes self-assembled within nanometer-sized rhenium clusters (ReCoP), have been prepared and their oxygen and nitrogen gas permeabilities were analyzed. The solubility of ReCoP and the characteristics of the corresponding composite membranes were analyzed using a Cahn microbalance, FT-IR spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and differential scanning calorimetry. The nitrogen permeability through the CN composite membranes decreased upon addition of ReCoP and CoP, which implies that the presence of these oxygen carrier complexes affects the structure of the polymer matrix. The oxygen permeability through the composite membranes containing small quantities of ReCoP decreased, but it increased upon increasing the concentration. The oxygen gas transport was affected by the matrix at low ReCoP concentrations, but higher concentrations of ReCoP increased the oxygen permeability as a result of its reversible and specific interactions with oxygen, effectively realizing ReCoP carrier-mediated oxygen transport.

  • Quenched and slow cooled as well as isothermally crystallized poly(tetramethylene succinate)(PTMS) films at two different temperatures were prepared. In the process of hydrolysis of the four specimens, structural changes such as the crystallinity, crystal size distribution, lattice parameter, lamellar thickness, long period and surface morphology were investigated by using wide and small angle X-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hydrolytic degradation of quenched film was faster than that of slow cooled and isothermally crystallized films. The film crystallized at 100$\^{C}$ exhibited extensive micro voids and thus showed faster degradation than that crystallized at 75$\^{C}$, demonstrating surface morphology is another important factor to govern degradation rate. The crystallinity of the specimen increased by 5-10% and long period decreased after hydrolysis for 20 days. At the initial stage of degradation, the lamellar thickness of quenched film rather increased, while that of slow cooled and isothermally crystallized films decreased. The hydrolytic degradation preferentially occurred in the amorphous region. The hydrolytic degradation in crystal lamellae are mainly at the crystal surfaces.

  • Nanocomposites made of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and organo-modified montmorillonite (O-MMT) were processed by melt compounding from a commercially available premixed LLDPE/nanoclay masterbatch, at different nanoclay loadings, by co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The morphological and dielectric properties of LLDPE/O-MMT nanocomposites were investigated to understand the structure-dielectric properties relationship in the nanocomposites. The microstructures of the materials were characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Initial findings by FTIR spectroscopy characterization indicated the absence of any chemical interaction between LLDPE and nanoclay during the extrusion process, while DSC showed that a 1% wt loading of nanoclay particles increased the degree of crystallinity of the nanocomposites samples. On the other hand, XRD, SEM, TEM and AFM indicated that nanoclay layers were intercalated or exfoliated in the LLDPE matrix. A correlation between the structure and dielectric properties of LLDPE/O-MMT nanocomposites was found and discussed.

  • The characteristics of liquid crystal polymer composite(LCPC) films are possessed of large-area and flexible display, polarizer free, high contrast, wide angle of visual filed and high responsiveness. It is well known that the LCPC films consisting of a continuous LC phase embeded in a three-dimentional network of polymer matrix are formed by photopolymerization-induced phase separation. In this study, we have investigated the point that both liquid crystals and polymer having different properties have to coexiste as composed films. The purpose of this study has been the development of new application with liquid crystals and UV-curable monomers. In the results abtained on the miscibility of nematic liquid crystal and UV-curable resins, difunctional monomer HX-620 turned out to shows the best. From the results abtained on structures, electro-optical properties and dynamic visocoelasticity for LCPC films, the best mixing ratio of monomer to LC mixture were 3/7(photoinitiator; 4wt%) by weight, and this ratio has been provided the most thermal stability for LCPC films. In the results abtained on structure and discoloration properties of LCPC films, it has been demonstrated that consiste of a 8:2 mixture of chiral nematic liquid crystal and HX-620 has the greatest domain and it was the best discoloration.

  • Flow channels with non-circular cross-sections are encountered in a wide variety of heat exchangers. Accurate friction factor and Colburn j factor data are essential for the design and viable applications of such heat exchangers. In this study, an analysis is con ducted on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for tube-bundle heat exchanger with various arrangements of tubes, of which their geometry could easily be modified from a circular one in a harsh environment. The parameters investigated are aspect ratio, pitch, and inclined angle of tubes. The results obtained are: (1) Aspect ratio has larger influence on the j and f factor than pitch; (2) As aspect ratio increases, both j and f factors decrease; (3) The high performance is achieved when the pitch and aspect ratio are in the range of 1.5${\~}$2.5 and 1.25${\~}$2.0, respectively; and (4) the inclined arrangements of tubes show unfavorable results for both heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in spite of the positive possibility of condensate removals in a latent heat recovery system.

  • The transition metal salt doped solid polymer electrolyte [TSPE] were prepared with HPMC as a host polymer. The virgin and doped films were prepared by solution-casting method and investigated using wide angle X-ray scattering method. Micro structural parameters like lattice strain (g%), stacking/twin faults, the average number of unit cells counted in a direction perpendicular to the Bragg's plane (hkl) spacing of (hkl) planes dhkl, crystallite size Ds, distortion width, standard deviation were determined by whole pattern powder fitting (WPPF) method, which is an extension of single order method. It is found that the crystallite size decreases with the increase in the content of $FeCl_3$. This decrease is due to increase in localized breaking of polymer network which also accounts for the amorphous nature of the material. The filler inorganic salt $FeCl_3$ acts as plasticizer. FTIR study also confirms and justifies the interaction between the polymer and in-organic salt in the matrix. Physical properties like mechanical stability and Ac conductivity in these films are in conformity with the X-ray results.

  • Laminated composite structures find wide range of applications in many branches of technology. They are much suited for weight sensitive structures (like aircraft) where thinner and lighter members made of advanced fiber reinforced composite materials are used. The orientations of fiber direction in layers and number of layers and the thickness of the layers as well as material of composites play a major role in determining the strength and stiffness. Thus the basic design problem is to determine the optimum stacking sequence in terms of laminate thickness, material and fiber orientation. In this paper, a new optimization technique called Cellular Automata (CA) has been combined with Genetic Algorithm (GA) to develop a different search and optimization algorithm, known as Cellular Genetic Algorithm (CGA), which considers the laminate thickness, angle of fiber orientation and the fiber material as discrete variables. This CGA has been successfully applied to obtain the optimal fiber orientation, thickness and material lay-up for multi-layered composite hybrid beams plates and shells subjected to static buckling and dynamic constraints.
